Go Gophers!!

The Big Ten really has been a QB black hole for quite a while. I mean you look at that list and you have Brady, Brees, and Wilson (who counts I guess even if he was just a one year Big Ten guy). After that the list gets pretty bleak, and not just for us. Iowa, Nebraska, and Northwestern are also working on nearly 30 years of not having a winning QB in the NFL.

This is a pretty sorry list.

Though there has been lacknof success for a number of schools, it is Not as bleak for the B10 as you think.

The B10 has 5 starting qbs in the NFL right now. Wilson, brady, brees, cousins, hoyer. 4 of the 5 are in the playoffs

The mighty SEC has 6 starting qbs in the nfl. Cutler, Stafford, manning, manning, newton, tannehill. Only 2 in the playoffs

Also consider that last week aj McCarron was the first Alabama qb to win a game since 1987

Not so bleak for the B10 overall if you look at it

Still not really sure the BIG should get credit for Wilson, he should probably count for the ACC more then BIG. Also not sure playoffs are a great barometer as to QB quality since Washington and Houston are there in large part because their divisions suck. The bottom line is the BIG isn't sending a lot of top QB's to the NFL and hasn't really for quite some time.

Not really a shocker though because when you look at the current crop of QB's in the BIG there really are very few guys that you look at and say sure fire NFL star. Even Hackenburg may have a tough time making the jump.

Alabama only recently broke their own such streak.... not really necessary for success.

The 2 future hall of fame guys above were not considered "sure fire NFL stars" either

I will give you Brady as he came out of nowhere. Brees might have slipped a little on draft day (1st pick of round 2) but he was an awesome college QB. There is no one in the current crop of QB's in the BIG that looks anywhere close to what Brees was in college. I am sure there are plenty of fans here that have flashbacks to the game he went like 31 for 35 against us.

There are a few guys in the BIG that might make it at the next level but the QB pool in the conference is not deep right now and hasn't been for quite some time.

Reusse: Gophers' NFL quarterback heritage has asterisks

Better yet, did the Gophers ever have a quarterback start an actual NFL game?

The answers to both of these questions are, “Sort of.’’

Mike Hohensee came to the Gophers as a junior college transfer in 1981 and had impressive passing stats in two seasons. In 1987, he was tending bar in Maryland when the NFL players went on strike at the end of September and the owners decided to field replacement teams.

It is actually pretty amazing that in the nearly 100 years that the NFL has been around we have a combined 5 starts, if you count Spergon Wynn as a former Gopher, and two of those came from a replacement player. I knew we didn't have a long history of putting QB's in the league but I wouldn't have guessed it was that bad. Hopefully we see that change at some point in the near future although it seems unlikely that Leidener will be the guy to break that trend.
