Gopher signee Gadiva Hubbard's Princess Anne team took on Riverdale Baptist:

It appears that the difference between being ranked second and 14th is free throws.

In front of a packed crowd Wednesday night at the Boo Williams Sportsplex, the nation’s No. 2 team took on No. 14 in the final of the top division of the Ronald Curry-Boo Williams Christmas Classic.

Riverdale Baptist, which had won two of the past three Dick’s Sporting Goods National Championships, was calm, cool and collected at the line. And while Princess Anne – the two-time defending Virginia Group 5A champion – appeared equally at ease, the numbers tell a different story.

Riverdale was 28 for 37 from the line. Princess Anne was 13 of 27.

The Crusaders prevailed 72-65 in overtime, connecting on 9 of 11 foul shots in overtime.

“Oh boy,” Cavaliers guard Gadiva Hubbard said. “That right there was the problem ... a real problem.

“If we hit just half of the ones we missed, we would have sealed it in the third quarter.”
...

Hubbard took little solace in the fact that her team showed it could hold its own against one of the nation’s best teams the past decade.

“Well ... there’s that,” she said. “That is true, for us to be able to even be in the game against the No. 2 team in the nation says something about us.”

With Riverdale making Hubbard their main focus throughout the game, Goodhope took over by scoring a game-high 24 points.

Hubbard still managed 18. She also had seven rebounds and six assists.

Gadiva Hubbards Princess Anne team avenged its only conference loss setting up a potential playoff game for a conference title:

Princess Anne (17-2, 11-1 conference) outscored Salem 49-27 over the last three quarters.

Cavaliers senior Gadiva Hubbard finished with a team-high 20 points, including nine in the fourth quarter to put the game away, and had seven steals and six rebounds.

Earlier in the week, Princess Anne won a 99-23 nail biter broken down in this story:

On the other side of the court, Princess Anne’s two-time All-Tidewater Player of the Year Gadiva Hubbard was grabbing her gear and heading to the lockerroom after a game-high 22 points in limited playing time.

“It’s not that I don’t feel for them, but if we went out and played soft, that would reflect badly on us,” the senior guard said. “We’re a transition team, so these kinds of games give us a chance to work on our half-court offense and our execution.

“And it’s good that it gives some of the players who don’t play a lot more court time. These are the things that will help us down the stretch.”

Conference Champs:

There’s no secret which player Darnell Dozier wants with the ball in her hands during hyped games of playoff magnitude.

The Princess Anne coach has constantly looked to Gadiva Hubbard, his trusted, championship-experienced senior who has committed to play at the University of Minnesota next year. Saturday’s Atlantic Conference playoff game against Salem was no different.

Hubbard willed the Cavaliers (21-2, 13-1 conference) to yet another Atlantic Conference title, dropping a double-double with game-highs of 17 points and 12 rebounds to go with four steals, four blocks and three assists in a 57-27 win at Kellam High.

“We expect Diva to do a whole lot each and every night,” Dozier said. “When the game is a little close, we want the ball in her hands at all times because she knows what to do and how to react. She knows what the coach wants and what she can do.”

Saturday’s game wasn’t much close after the first quarter, and Hubbard’s presence on both ends of the floor had a lot to do with extending Princess Anne’s lead...

...“Defense had to do it for us,” Hubbard added. “We were more experienced.”

Princess Anne’s smothering defense led to easier offensive looks in transition and in half-court sets. The Cavaliers’ depth (five players scored four or more points) kept the SunDevils scrambling defensively. Salem couldn’t afford to double any player and was punished for slightly late defensive rotations

She's a player that fits Stollings system. Can run the floorshoot, rebound, and is athletic.

Gadiva Hubbard's team advances to state 5A semifinals with a 73-24 win.

Princess Anne’s starting five had the best seat in the house for much of Friday’s Group 5A state quarterfinal at ODU against Atlee. No, the starters weren’t in foul trouble. They watched as every player in the lineup saw plenty of playing time in a 73-24 blowout.

Princess Anne opened the game by turning the Raiders’ first six possessions into turnovers and a 14-0 lead.

Gadiva Hubbard, who played less than a half and finished with a game-high 13 points, hit a pair of 3-pointers during the run.

“Games like this give us a chance to execute our offense and try different things to see how they work,” Hubbard said. “But it’s all about our pressure. A lot of people simply can’t handle our press. “And it’s fun to watch (the subs) get all that playing time because they are an important part of all of this.”

Also, as was mentioned earlier in the thread she put up 18, 7 and 6 on the 2nd ranked team in the nation. She sounds like a very solid player.

Gadiva Hubbard leads Princess Anne to third straight state title. Hubbard had an off night in the semifinals two days ago; but finished her career with a flourish.

With Gadiva Hubbard playing the final game of her high school basketball career, the Princess Anne Cavaliers didn’t have to look too far for her replacement.

Throughout the playoffs, with so much attention paid to the Minnesota-bound Hubbard, sophomore Xaria Wiggins found plenty of time to shine.

She was at her brightest in Wednesday’s Group 5A state final against Highland Springs, helping Hubbard spearhead a 73-50 victory that wasn’t nearly that close.

Wiggins finished with 17 points, 11 rebounds and four blocked shots.

“This is her team from here on out,” said Hubbard, who finished with a game-high 29 points. Hubbard scored 35 and 31, respectively, in two previous championship victories. “I know that for a fact. She has more than enough talent for the part.

“She can do it all.”...

...Hubbard, a two-time All-Tidewater Player of the Year, likely will win her first state player of the year honor. She smiled during questioned from the media and seemed more than ready to hand over the torch

And one more item:

RICHMOND | Gadiva Hubbard put an exclamation point on her storied high school career with another big performance on a big stage.

Hubbard scored 29 points to help Princess Anne blow out Highland Springs 73-50 on Wednesday in the Group 5A state championship game at VCU’s Siegel Center .

Hubbard scored 35 and 31 points, respectively, in the Cavaliers’ state championship game victories in 2014 and 2015.

Hubbard, who has signed with Minnesota, scored 35 points in 2014 to beat Highland Springs, and burned the Springers again Wednesday by scoring 20 second-half points.

“Players like that, in their scheme, are going to find a way to get out and score,” Highland Springs coach Franklin Harris said. “She’s going to be a very good college player. She puts pressure on you no matter who’s defending her. She’s not a stand-still set shooter. The girl’s got talent.”
