2015 Gophers Volleyball Thread!

Thank you. Gophers will most likely will move to #3 in the coaches poll and Penn State will fall to #4. My guess is USC #1, Washington #2, Minnesota #3, and Penn State #4.

I'd guess #2 behind USC. Hard to argue the 1 loss Trojans don't deserve #1. Won't matter much. 4 more games to finish off the Big Ten title. 2 more wins guarantees at least a tie and 3 for title (and 2 of 4 matches are against teams we should sweep).

Go Gophers!!

Michigan Upsets Penn St in Happy Valley tonight. Shocking really. So the Gophers have a 2 game lead over Nebraska with 3 games to go. One more win guarantees a tie and two more clinches title. We're going to win all 4, so I'm not too worried.

It was another night when Minnesota spread the offense around. I was hoping Paige would be the fourth Gopher with double digit kills but she ended with 8 (hitting .438). Hannah hit perhaps the match’s heaviest shots and finished with 10 kills (.600).

When Maryland took their last third set time out, It looked like Hugh spent time talking to Santana about her swing. Daly then finished off three of the last four Minnesota points with strong hits. Santana posted 15 kills (.412).

My favorite kill of the night? Rosado, noticing a hole the size of Northrup Mall in the Maryland defense, simply shoved the ball into the opening pleasing another good crowd at the PAV.

Good to see PSU take another loss. now if Illini can beat the Badgers...

The Gopher Lady's are on fire. Number 1 in the RPI, 3 in the Coaches Poll. The win over PSU was huge, especially the sweep. This could be the year.

If it can be called a match. It was a beat down.

Agreed, mplarson7! They are fun to watch.

I need to check out the Nebraska schedule. Hopefully they have some tough games coming up.

Nebraska still plays Penn St once more, although Huskers won first matchup.

We are on 15 match winning streak. Just Win Baby!

The B1G title ain't claimed yet as Purdue celebrates knocking off number 3 Minnesota in five sets. Purdue should have wrapped it up in three (they won the first two sets 22, 19). But Minnesota fought off 7 match points to take the third set 34-32. The Gophers won the fourth and then floundered in the fifth falling 15-10.

Purdue successfully served Rosado and took advantage of the Gophers triple block (things other teams have tried but failed). At some point in the match (I didn’t notice it right away), Goehner stayed in for Whilhite in the front row helped get Minnesota on track. In the fifth set-not so much and Whilhite reappeared. Purdue did a good job controlling Minnesota’s outside hitters and much like the Michigan match at the PAV Minnesota had trouble finding the floor.

The Wednesday night OSU match just stepped up a B1G notch in importance.

ALSO: Nebraska defeated Michigan in Ann Arbor 3-1 and now is one behind in the standings. PSU defeated Maryland to move two behind the Gophers.

Remaining matches:

Minnesota (16-2) OSU, @ IND
Nebraska (15-3) ILL, PSU
Penn State (14-4) NW, @PSU
Wisconsin (13-4) OSU, RUT, @PUR

Team looked a little flat against Purdue. Serve receive wasn't good and it seemed like they spent a lot of the night out of rotation. Need to clean things up before the NCAAs.

Gophers in five! Minnesota takes the last three sets: 25-27, 29-31, 25-17, 25-15, 15-9

A free swinging Daly Santana was a wonderful way to end the fifth set and senior night in the PAV. Ohio State kept the Minnesota offense under wraps during the first two sets. Minnesota played the opening two sets much the way they did at Purdue (except with even more poorly timed errors). And the Gophers had trouble controlling the Buckeyes big hitters (Appold and Sandbothe).

However, some adjustments helped Minnesota take the last three sets (Hugh began subbing Beal in for Seliger-Swenson on the front line when the Gophers were serving). At the end, Minnesota looked like the team that defeated Penn State, Santana looked like a Player of the Year and more important the Gophers looked like Big Ten Champs.

Of note: Patrick Reusse finally went to his second match in a season.

Wow, what a win for the Gopher Volleyball team! They almost made an amazing comeback over the weekend, and then come back from a 2-0 deficit to win tonight and clinch a share of the B1G title. Seems like a team that was on the verge of an epic collapse to not win the B1G, and they found a way to come back and get the job done.

Congrats to the team and coaches!

#1 USC lost in 5 sets at #13 UCLA. The race for the #1 national seed gets a little more interesting. Washington may be the favorite now.

USC closes at home vs. California Friday (First meeting).
Washington closes at home vs. Washington State Saturday (UW won 1st match 3-2).
Texas closes at Oklahoma Friday (Texas won 1st match 3-1).
Gophers close at Indiana Saturday (Gophers won 1st match 3-0).

Still only the second loss for USC and neither were to bad opponents. Gophers may end up 4th of that group but it doesn't much matter. Get to the final four and you need to beat them either way.

Didn't get to watch any of the match last night, but wanted to say a full congrats to coach McCutcheon and the ladies on winning at least a share of the Big 10 title! They've had an amazing season and here's hoping it can continue for a few more weeks! ;)

Assuming Minnesota will be a top four seed with the advantage of being the home team in Des Moines, it remains fascinating as to where the Badgers are seeded. In Mondays RPI, Minnesota was third and the Badgers fourth. (Nebraska (7) and PSU (9)).

Since losing home and home to Minnesota, Wisconsin is playing extremely well having lost only four sets (two of those at Illinois). Their 11 match win streak includes defeating Nebraska in Lincoln. The Badgers, playing the same schedule as the Gophers, are the second best team in the conference. You have to go back to the non-conference schedule to find troublesome losses for Wisconsin.

Penn State could simplify everything by knocking off the Huskers; but perhaps that sends Nebraska to the Des Moines regional. For that matter, maybe the Gophers get sent to Kentucky. Damn, Sunday’s selection show will be fun. I just wish the first and second rounds at the PAV weren’t opposite Gopher Hockey.

True but Washington only has 2 losses and swept USC in their last meeting. They split with USC on the season (UW 4-3 set advantage) and Washington's loss to Stanford (No. 12 RPI, No. 6 AVCA) looks slightly less harmful on paper than USC's loss to UCLA (No. 13 RPI, No. 13 AVCA). The differences are extremely slim - Washington's bad non-conference schedule will likely give the edge to USC though.

Gophers beat Indiana in 4 sets to win the Big Ten Championship outright.

Yes! Big Ten Champs! Waiting for the seeding. Wondering why Indiana has a good announcer and only an end line camera? And watching Nebraska/Penn State to see if the Gophers win the B1G title by one or two.
