I'm concerned that we lose some freaking donors over this and we don't break ground as promised. We are going to need someone who can keep the momentum going to raising money and is serious about improving the facilities.

I'd like to see Trent Tucker get some consideration and from a totally short sighted viewpoint, Richard Coffey if it meant getting Amir to play here!

The Hump chimes in with his endorsement:

I posted this in the other thread, but Kris Humphries tweeted about Lee Hutton III, not real familiar with him, but he is a sports attorney (repped Kris in his Kardashian divorce) and played football for the Gophers.

I think he's a really intriguing candidate. Lawyer, supposedly very bright/sharp. Obviously a football guy who also is big with basketball.

Admittedly know very very little about him, but I'm intrigued.

This is an important hire, we need someone who will unapologetically put basketball and football first. I think prior experience is huge with where the programs(s) are currently and the big decisions/moves that need to be made in the next year.

I think we can all agree that we're at a pretty critical junction... I'm pretty sure the last thing we need is to hire someone with presumably zero experience working in an athletic department because we're always too enamored by the idea of having someone from MN or simply the U of M turn things around. I think there's a tendency to overestimate how beneficial that connection/experience is. Maybe this Hutton guy even does have athletic department experience, I don't know, but either way there would be a ton of learning to do on the job and this isn't exactly a good time to hope someone pans out. Maybe he'd be great for the athletic department, but as far as hiring an AD goes, now is the time to really invest in someone who is proven and overpay to get them here.

Agree with the above post. Don't need someone wet in the ears. Can we identify and hire the next Mark Hollis?

Like, thumbs up, +19 and all that stuff.

Jim Carter weighs in per Shooter:

From Gophers "M" Club Hall of Famer Jim Carter, a former football star from South St. Paul: "It is disappointing to hear (Minnesota) president (Eric) Kaler say the 'U' will conduct a nationwide search for a new athletic director ... again!

"With all the talent right here in the Twin Cities, both inside and outside the university, why in the hell would we do that again?!? With outstanding men and women of great character and intelligence from whom to choose, names such as Gopher baseball coach John Anderson, Gopher interim athletic director Beth Goetz, former Timberwolves president Bob Stein, Gopher assistant athletic director Dan O'Brien, WCHA Commissioner Billy Robertson and hockey legend Lou Nanne, why not be smart, save time and money, and pick one of these outstanding people?!"

While we are fortunate to have great talent already on board, which should help any transition.. those donors and M club members wondering why we would start a national search again don't get it at all. If we want to play with the big boys, we need a Football guy (or gal) as Bleed has stated. Maybe that means someone already on board, but I doubt it.

Dean Johnson from U of M board of Regents was on with Sid Sunday morning.

He said the regents "might" vote to authorize ground-breaking on the facilities project at the September meeting - BUT it might have to wait until the October meeting. Said the hold-up is the issue with the location of the track facilities, which apparently has not been finalized.

Johnson did say that, if they don't authorize the ground-breaking in September, he expects they would take action in October and still be able to break ground this fall.

Terry Ryan chimes in:

Twins general manager Terry Ryan said he would support Gophers baseball coach John Anderson to be the University of Minnesota's next athletics director if he wanted the job.

Anderson, the Big Ten Conference's all-time leader in baseball victories, has been coaching Minnesota since 1982. His ex-Gophers teammate is current Twins manager Paul Molitor.

Anderson, 60, from Hibbing, Minn., has not said he's interested in replacing Norwood Teague, who resigned last week.

"I know John and have forever," Ryan said Thursday. "If he wanted that job, that would be kind of an interesting situation because he has been over there for the last three or four choices.

"I don't know if that's something he wants to do or (whether) he wants to remain the head baseball coach. But I would say if John wanted to do something like that he would be very well received around this community because he's well known."

Sorry, people endorsing somebody in print or on the air really doesn't impress me. Almost like Sid lauding some assistant ticket manager as the "greatest ever" or "somebody they will really miss" when he retires simply because the guy sucked up to Sid.

It's as much media throwing sh*t out there speculating or offering up candidates about whom they really know nothing. We on GH already do that very well ourselves.

I'd much rather see TR say the Twins are donating 5-10 million to the U than endorsing U AD candidates.
