The University of Texas is not exactly hurting for money, but that hasn't stopped them from trying to cut costs wherever they can. Texas, which made $161 million in revenue -- and turned a $7 million profit -- in 2014, has cut free meals for coaches in order to save $300,000.
According to Chip Brown of HornsDigest.com, coaches used to be allowed to go to the university's dining halls to eat with their players, but now will be limited to 30 visits a year -- a little over one visit per week during the school year. If coaches go over that 30 visit threshold, they will have to pay $10 each visit. There are also restrictions on the times they can visit, as they are not allowed to go after 6 p.m. and were instructed to only go from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. during lunch hours.
Now, for football coach Charlie Strong or basketball coach Shaka Smart, that's probably not a big problem, but for the coaches of smaller teams it has been a frustrating change. Going to the dining halls is one of the easier ways for coaches to meet and check up on players. According to Brown's report, women's tennis coach stepped down partially due to this new policy and general frustration with AD Steve Patterson.
