The search for a piece of land to house the University of Minnesota’s future track and field venue narrowed Tuesday night. Jon Steadland, a member of university President Eric Kaler’s staff, announced that the new track would not be built on the driving range of the university’s Les Bolstad Golf Course. The news was welcomed by a full room of about 75 residents from the Coffman Condominiums located across Larpenteur Avenue from the course.

Steadland didn’t say where the new track would be located or when that announcement would come. He was one of five individuals, including Rep. Alice Hausman, DFL-Minneapolis, and Falcon Heights Mayor Peter Lindstrom, invited to address the concerned residents of the condo facility that houses mostly retired university staff.

The university must find a new home for its track and field teams, soon to be displaced by the school’s $190 million athletics village. The golf course and land recently purchased near TCF Bank Stadium are considered likely landing spots.
