New Richard Pitino Blog: Early Summer Impressions

Biggest disappointment was Lil Dre's big dropoff from 2013-2014. FG% 51 down to 44; 3PT% 49 to 32 and PPG 12 to 8.5. He just never got going for whatever reason.

Mathieu's offensive rating actually improved his senior year. He showed great improvement on his turnover rate as a senior. The eFG% decline was to be expected. But, he had some ugly Big Ten games and took a far lesser role with new high-usage guys getting minutes (Carlos Morris, Walker [not new but his high minutes were new])

Preseason Comments: Dre Mathieu’s decision-making – he shot 54.7% eFG% against D-I teams last season, but we project this figure to fall. While FG% declining isn’t desired, there are two stats we wouldn’t mind seeing lower for Mathieu this year: Usage (24%… just down a touch to 22% or so) and turnovers (24%… sub-20% would be nice)

Actual results:
Mathieu’s eFG% did drop as projected – from 54.7% down to 48.5%. His 50% 3-point field goal shooting on limited attempts in 2013-14 wasn’t real. Behind the arc, the senior guard shot just 31% and his 2-point field goal percentage declined by .023.

Mathieu was a different player this season. We thought his usage could drop and it did – but the decline was substantial – down to 19.1%. In conference games, his usage fell from 25.6% as a junior to just 18.3% as a senior.

His turnover rate was cleaned up, improving to a respectable 17.9% compared to 23.6% in his first season with the Gophers.

But, he had some ugly Big Ten games

I think the Big Ten stats are the more meaningful comparison, especially when we don't play any post-season games. Otherwise you have about 1/3 of the overall stats being formed against crap teams in low pressure situations, largely meaningless and creating misleading overall numbers.

yep. Luckily we can look this up. http://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/players/deandre-mathieu-1.html

Conference games only

His minutes decreased by 3 per game(not that big) his FG% dropped by 10%(from 0.506 to 0.400) his rbs dropped by 0.7 per game his assists dropped by 1.5 and points dropped by 4.8pts/gm.

To translate that to per 40 minutes -0.6rbs/40, -1.7ast/40, -5.2pts/40. the 2 stats that went in the right direction junior to senior year were steals +0.2/40 and TO -1.8TO/40. his offensive rating (whatever that actually is) dropped from 103.8 to 96.8 from junior to senior year. his defensive rating also dropped but less significantly.

That's what I was getting at. He stunk his senior year. Decreasing TOs doesn't help when you need to be the playmaker and aren't making plays any more.

Pretty high praise here....

Dorsey, McBrayer, and Murphy? Or was he referring to some of the transfers?

I think he was referring to Murphy, Dorsey and McBrayer. Sounds like a law firm.

EE being fine means what? He was fine if you mean he played okay on D
He was not fine anywhere else. This is not Iowa girls basketball where you can play defensive and offensive teams.
The team needed pts from the center position and Ee would never sign up for that.
If we had plenty of scoring, he would have played more and MO would have played less. Neither fit what Pitino wants to do, but MO could at least fill a hole in team capabilities.
Was EE better than Bakary? Bad question. Once the tournament was out of range RP had sit one of the senior 5s. It hurt the team less to sit EE. I appreciate EE is a good person and student, but he made the decision not to excel on offense. His blaming RP for that is just naive.
