All Things Shamorie Ponds Recruiting Thread - UPDATED 9/16/15: Visit cancelled

Scroll Zagoria assumes he means after the visits. September isn't too far off

The tough NYC guard broke down his final four schools.

St. John’s (Official Visit August 18th-20th) - “I like St. John’s because it’s close to home, I fit their style of play and they are basically telling me that I am one of their main recruits for the class of 2016.”

Providence (Official Visit September 11th-13th) – “They have good guards and they let them play,” he said. “I want to go to a college that lets their guards play and they do just that.”

Minnesota (Official Visit September 18th-20th) - “I pretty much grew up with Coach Kimani so I have a close relationship with him,” he said. “They let their guards play too, they open the floor for them and they fit my style of play.”

Creighton (Official Visit Taken) - “I had no idea it was going to be as great of a school as it is until my visit,” he said. “The campus and everything was amazing. It took me as a surprise and I had a good time on campus.”

He looks to cut down his list one more time before making a decision.

“I probably will cut it down to two once again after all my official visits are done,” said Ponds.

He will make his decision soon, but says he isn’t sure exactly when he’ll decide. The four schools on his list have told him what they like about him and how they could use him on their teams.

“They’ve told me that I’m a good player in transition and can use my length on defense,” he said.

Two factors stand out to him in terms of what he’ll base his decision off of.

“I want a school with a good education and if they lead me in a good path after college,” he told MADE Hoops.

That is ... Not bad at all. Wow. I don't think it says much about where Trent is going, but Ponds committing. Man. Great!

Think we can find a loophole somewhere and establish that as a commitment? Haha.

I kind of took that whole twitter convo as sarcasm but that may be the pessimist in me.

Maybe he really is leaning our way, but is trying to play it off like he isn't? Btw, current crystal ball says 88% St. John's.

I'm guessing he told Trent he was leaning Gophers at one point and now Gary is just ribbing him a bit. I like it!

Since deleted.

I do believe we were the clear leader in Ponds' recruitment at one point, but it could've changed since then. Mullin, for reasons I really don't understand, has gotten some buzz with St. John's. I guess we'll see.

Nah it's still there. I found it on Trent's profile, not Ponds'. I think this is a positive development for us.

You don't understand why athletes would want to play for one of the 50 greatest basketball players in history, who is a god at his school, and is geographically located in the heart of the highest concentration of basketball talent on Earth?

Now look on the other side of the scope... He's hasn't been a coach in any capacity prior to being hired this summer, so he's a complete unknown as far as coaching goes. You're also stepping into a program where the cupboard is emptier than ever. Remind me again what key players they have, because IIRC they've lost pretty much everything.

dpodoll is missing the lack of coaching experience and the fact that being a god doesnt translate to anything.

My mistake - he wasn't on the 50 greatest players list.

New York hasn't been producing basketball talent like they used to. I would say Chicago, LA, Indianapolis, and Memphis are producing better talent than NY.

@AdamZagoria: .@ShamorieP says it's 'possible' he could announce tomorrow at Elite 24

Hopefully he's golden!!!

Eh, probably not good for us if he does. Smells like a St. John's commit.

Yeah, I'm not liking our chances if he announces tomorrow.

Hopefully he makes it up here to his visit. Pitino has spent alot of time recruiting him.

He'd be the perfect finish to the 2016 recruiting class (we'll see what happens with Amir and the whole Fred situation first). If the Goohers found some way to get one of these two to pair with Hurt when all is said and done, the gophers will be sitting in good shape.

Personally, I'd like to see ONE of them, Hurt, and Bakary's younger brother (playing for a high school in Western Pennsylvania) as the class. There's also the possibility that Buggs might decide to do a grad transfer and another scholarship would open up after the season.

For those interested, the Elite 24 game which Ponds is playing in is on ESPNU at 6:00 pm central tonight. Rawle Alkins (2016) and Hamidou Diallo (2017) are two other guys with Gopher offers, both of them 5-stars. I'm not sure we have much of a shot with either of them, though according to 247 we were Diallo's first offer, with his second offer, from UCONN, not coming until nearly 4 months later.

I believe Ryan James said to expect Pitino to recruit like he has 4 open scholarships for 2016.
