10: The Gophers have a brand new stadium and a beautiful downtown setting. However, it's hard to get recruits to The Twin Cities and the program won't ever be confused with the bigger, more powerful jobs in the B1G. It's a tough sell.

Go Gophers!!

"Ever" is an awfully long time. Keep winning, and this starts looking more and more appealing.

Fan support here is an issue.

according to the article, the rankings considered factors such as support (assuming fan support and administrative support), ability to attract 'top players,' history of success, and potential to sustain a winning program, and "most pressure to win."

It looks like the panel put a lot of weight on recent history - so teams like Iowa or Illinois are ranked ahead of the Gophers, even though the Gophs have arguably been better over the last two years. Have to wonder if competing the facility project will help the Gophers look better to the national pundits.

Can't say I disagree with the list.

True in some cases, but certainly wasn't the case with Michigan State, #6 in this ranking. 53-14 in the last 5 seasons, including 4 seasons of 11 wins or more, 2 B1G championships, 2 divisional titles, and 4 straight bowl wins, including two BCS/New Year's 6 (Rose, Cotton). They could have just as easily labeled this "ranking the B1G teams from 1-14 by football brand-name".

Certainly no argument with Ohio State at the top. ... that's a no-brainer.

Fan support here will never be what it is in a true college town, and that will always bring us down in these lists. TCF is a beautiful stadium but the small size and lack of mystique/tradition for the building will hold it back against Michigan/OSU/Wisconsin/PSU/Iowa

Stop with the fan support talk.....Its just like with anywhere else with a few exceptions since there is nothing else to do in those towns. Consistently win and play meaningful games late in the year, the fans will come. Same thing goes with level of recruits as we have seen in the 2016 class. Jerry has them on the right track it seems. TCF will continue to fill up as long as they dont get too carried away with raising tix prices ;)

Yep, if you take away the current coaches at all the schools and just look at the jobs themselves it would be really tough to justify moving the Minnesota job up much on this list. Once the facilities project is complete that should move us up a few spots in a poll like this.

We are ahead of Maryland and Illinois. Champaign is like Mankato.

Maryland has a ton of instate talent, about 16th nationally according to this plus Navy is the only in-state FBS school that they have to compete with for those guys.

That and the Under Armor support they get, especially spearheading the $155 million facility project makes it a job with a ton of upside. I'd put it ahead of Iowa despite lack of fan support and little tradition.

But Maryland is a small state with a lot of borders and big programs not too far away: Penn State, Ohio State, Virginia Tech to name 3, which absorb a lot of the talent produced in-state.

Just a couple of points for this esteemed panel. Michigan State owns Michigan, and has beaten Ohio State. That is a pretty good job. East Lansing is not Ann Arbor, but winning is what its all about. Michigan is too highly rated maybe 3-4. Michigan State is 2. And who thinks Illinois is a better job than Minnesota? Come on Man.

What do you think these guys would say? I think sentiment was true even 5 years ago but the landscape is changing for every school. Slowly athletes are looking at education as part of their package and the prospects after their career is over. That puts us ahead of many helmet schools IMO in regards to recruiting. Of course some of the huge schools will pay more because of the bigger audience and resources but that does not mean we cannot compete and become a power.
