The formula for winning a conference hockey title is supposed to be simple. Score goals and prevent the other team from scoring goals. That's it. Or the advanced version is to sweep your home series and split your road series.

The most straightforward method to finish the regular season atop your conference is to have the most talented and most experienced team. That's the Gophers, which is why they were an overwhelming pick, back in the fall to repeat as Big Ten champs.

On Saturday, after what seems like the longest and messiest road of a regular season that anyone can remember, and using a formula of shootout losses and shutout wins and home splits and scoreboard watching that could scarcely be duplicated, the much-maligned Gophers ended the regular season right where they were predicted to be.

"Last year the road was pretty smooth to get there," Gophers coach Don Lucia said, outside a noisy home locker room. "This year, we had to meander a little bit to do that. It's never easy to win a championship. To our guys' credit we came out of the month of January and we've played some pretty good hockey."
