2015 Coaching Depatures Thread

Kevin Ollie is the favorite for the OKC job. Played there with Durant and Westbrook who both speak very highly of him. Since both of them will be free agents in a year , the OKC owner would be a fool not to hire him.

Go Gophers!!

Can't agree with Myron on that one. Jacobson's done a great job but not sure he'd be a fit for Florida. But Myron got one thing right, at least Jacobson is a proven head coach, something you'd think Florida would want.

per Gary Parrish:

At some point over the next few weeks, perhaps longer, but almost certainly at some point, the Chicago Bulls are going to strike a deal with another NBA franchise that frees Tom Thibodeau to coach elsewhere. Or, more likely, Chicago's front office will realize nobody is going to compensate them for the right to hire their coach, at which point they'll essentially fire their coach (because they hate him) and Thibodeau will be freed to work elsewhere.

So ...

Barring a major surprise, one way or another, that Bulls job is opening.

Nobody I know thinks otherwise.

And then the Bulls will likely extend an offer to Fred Hoiberg.

And then Hoiberg will likely accept.

And, in that case, the Iowa State job would suddenly be open.

So you can understand why ISU fans are going through it these days, right? It's late May, otherwise known as a stress-free time in college basketball. The prospects have mostly committed. The coaching carousel has paused. Everything is calm. But not in Ames, Iowa.

Folks are in a frenzy in Ames.

Because they know everything I wrote above is true.

Thibodeau will be a great hire for the Wolves.

From what I read, Alvin Gentry is favorite to get Bulls job and Flip has committed to coaching Wolves next year. I wish he'd let someone else give it a go, but it's his choice.

Iowa State assistant coach T.J. Otzelberger has the "full support" of Cyclones' athletic director Jamie Pollard to succeed Fred Hoiberg as head coach, multiple sources told CBSSports.com on Friday.

A major conference coaching vacancy filled without a Pitino rumor? The end is near!

per CBS:

Iowa State AD, administration split over Fred Hoiberg's replacement

Iowa State's administration is split over the direction to take to name a successor to Fred Hoiberg, multiple sources said.

Hoiberg was set to be announced as the new coach of the Chicago Bulls on Tuesday.

As we reported on Friday, Iowa State assistant coach T.J. Otzelberger has a "full support" of Cyclones' athletic director Jamie Pollard, but several other sources said school president Dr. Steven Leath wants to hire a "brand name" for the position.

"He feels the level of the job has changed since Fred got here," one source said of Leath. "He wants to bring in someone with some pedigree. It's a battle of wills right now."

Does Richard Pitino have pedigree?

From my ISU alum colleague:

"What I’ve heard is that they at least want to use one of the big-name search firms to show that some of the more famous people were considered and TJ still came out as the best choice. We have a very smart AD and he was second-guessed by some for hiring Hoiberg in the first place with zero coaching experience."

CBS: Jeff Hornacek's agent denies report his client declined ISU meeting

Hornacek fits the description of the "splashy" candidate Iowa State president Dr. Steven Leath is believed to prefer. The 52 year-old Iowa State graduate is a former NBA All-Star who has spent the past two seasons coaching the Phoenix Suns. He only has one year left on his contract with Phoenix, meaning Iowa State could theoretically offer job security.

Meantime, sources told CBSSports.com that the search firm Iowa State has hired for assistance (Parker Executive Search) has contacted, or at least tried to contact, Stephen F. Austin's Brad Underwood, Valparaiso's Bryce Drew, Murray State's Steve Prohm and Hornicek. Those four, along with Iowa State assistant T.J. Otzelberger, remain under consideration. SI.com reported Wednesday that former Suns coach Lindsey Hunter is also a candidate. And sources have told CBSSports.com that Oregon's Dana Altman might too be an option, though it's possible the sexual assault allegations three players in his program endured two seasons ago could hurt Altman with Iowa State's administration.
