2015 Coaching Depatures Thread

I hate April 1

fwiw, Seth Davis has tweetedd Stevens as a sleeper for the UT job, sans April 1 reference

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p><a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/Texas?src=hash">#Texas</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/Longhorns?src=hash">#Longhorns</a> close to finalizing a 5-year deal with <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/VCU?src=hash">#VCU</a>'s Shaka Smart, sources tell <a href="http://t.co/XBNn1ev7Ha">http://t.co/XBNn1ev7Ha</a>.

and just yesterday Seth Davis tweeted:

"A knowledgeable source informs me that as of this morning there have been no direct talks b/t Texas and Shaka Smart. Not sensing momentum."

Marshall out, will this turn up the heat for Pitino:

If he is leaving for Texas that is confusing to me.

He turned down way better jobs already. Is he just sick of being at VCU? Certainly possible.

Might just want to try something new. Never know.

But did anyone see Shaka Smart at the Mall of Texas like when he visited the MOA during our coaching search???

Richmondinsider had no news release, so I doubt it.

Wouldn't it be great for one of us to start a "RichmondInsider" account on the Texas board and rehash that great rumor mill thread....dde04

Richmond strip clubs offer VCU Coach Shaka Smart free lap dances to stay[/h]

VCU men’s basketball Coach Shaka Smart was reportedly scheduled to meet Thursday with Texas Athletic Director Steve Patterson, who was expected to offer Smart the same job with the Longhorns.
If that happens, Smart will have a difficult decision to make. Is it worth leaving a program he helped build for the chance to compete in the Big 12? Is it worth leaving a school where basketball is king for one where March is as much about spring football as the NCAA tournament?
Is it worth turning down free brisket, apple fritters and lap dances for a bump in salary?
With VCU (and Texas) fans on #ShakaWatch, Richmond business are making an effort to convince Smart to stay. Buz and Ned’s Real Barbecue offered the brisket and apple fritters, while Richmond strip clubs Club Rouge and Pure Pleasure offered the lap dances. It would’ve been really weird if it was the other way around.

In a more wholesome effort to convince Smart to stay, VCU fans have planned a rally in the parking lot of the Siegel Center at 5:30 p.m.

Thanks to SB Nation for sharing.

Doesn't look like the strip clubs' offers worked...

“@SportsCenter: Alabama will meet with former Mavericks and Nets coach Avery Johnson tonight. He last coached in 2012. (via @GoodmanESPN)”

ESPN: Avery Johnson to coach Tide

Johnson, who played 16 years in the league and was a point guard on the 1999 champion San Antonio Spurs, achieved his greatest coaching success with the Mavericks. Dallas won 60 games twice, and Johnson was the NBA coach of the year in 2006 after guiding the Mavs to the NBA Finals, where they lost to the Miami Heat in six games.

His son, Avery Johnson Jr., also plays in the SEC as a freshman point guard at Texas A&M.

Alabama swung and missed on Wichita State's Gregg Marshall earlier in the week after offering him a deal worth $4 million per year. Marshall opted to stay with the Shockers on a seven-year deal worth $3 million annually, sources said.

For the OKC Thunder job

“@royceyoung: Two names to watch: Billy Donovan and Fred Hoiberg.”

“@ZachLowe_NBA: I’ll echo @ESPNSteinLine: Billy Donovan is a hot name for the OKC job. I’m sure he’d like to know Durant’s intentions first, though.”
