per CBS:

The last-place coach in arguably the best division in football, the SEC West, will make at least $4 million next season. Let that sink in for a moment now that Mississippi State has granted a raise and extension to Dan Mullen.

Within eight years, college football has gone from no $4 million-a-year coaches to a clean seven-for-seven sweep in the game's most competitive division.

The money keeps pouring in, and we barely blink anymore. This isn't a criticism of Mullen. To each his own.

Greatest division of all time?

Yes

As long as all you care about is winning, they are great.

I can't speak for the other SEC West schools, but to us, four million a year is chump change. In 2014-2105, we have the following on-campus construction projects going on:

Jack K. Williams Administration Building Capital Renewal - $11.4mm
Scoates Hall Capital Renewal - $10.6mm
Francis Hall Capital Renewal - $8.0mm
CVM Education Building - $120mm
Corps Dorms Renovation - $15.5mm
Student Recreation Center Addition - $50.0mm
Engineering Education Complex - $137mm
Commons Building Renovation - $24.0mm
Chemistry Building Renovation - $4.6mm
Vet Med Diagnostic Lab - $51.0mm
Airport Runway Rehab - $5.5mm
Utilities Upgrades - $32.3mm
White Creek Apartments - $200mm
Engineering Village - $4.0mm
Engineering Laboratory Building - $23.0mm
Maritime Academy Hall - $45.0

TOTAL - $741.9mm

Add in all construction which occurred in the decade prior to 2014 and you add in nearly a billion dollars. There's another couple hundred million in the pipeline with a new music building ($40mm), Quad Renovation (unknown), additional engineering buildings (unknown), the fourth building to the Agriculture and Life Sciences complex (unknown), the health and kinesiology classroom building, the clinical lab facility, and the gardens and greenway outdoor teaching space. There are also ongoing renovations to Evans Library and other facilities.

Oh, and that doesn't include a $485mm redevelopment of Kyle Field.

We've earmarked $130mm for our new president to hire some of the top faculty in the world. No one does more research on agriculture than we do (read: feeding and clothing the world).

In looking at research funding, TAMU is only behind the U by four places and $38mm, and does so without a well-established medical school. Our externally funded research expenditures top $820mm.

We have 62,185 students, between a $8.7 and $11.1 billion (systemwide, depending on the source) endowment, and raised $740mm from our former students and friends in 2013.

So, don't get too concerned about the meager pennies and table scraps we throw Sumlin's way.

Now, I'm just messing with y'all a little bit, but don't get the idea for a second that all we do in the SEC is pay our football coaches a kingly sum and teach coloring book and counting on fingers and toes classes in trailers.

Life is good down here, the skies are sunny, and we like to put money into things we enjoy - like football. But, we also have great facilities for academics and research, and are developing high caliber leaders who do well in life (ranking 50 places above the U for career salary). :)
