Mar is 61st in Rivals' latest Top 150 for 2017 and has been a frequent guest at Gopher games this year. Time to get a thread for his recruitment as could will be as big as Gary Trent Jr's in that class.

Mar overrated just like Jarvis was. Rivals had Jarvis top 75 as a Soph. now he is gone from top 150. Sacar by all measures far and away best High School Player for DE. The U has seen a ton of Goanar and he is still on the watch list.

I agree with the notion that Sacar is a big miss for us.
But Mar is not overrated, he's a very very good sophmore, has a lot of tools length and ability. Game comparable to Loul Deng on both ends of the floor.

We'll get a chance to see him in the state tourney, you'll see

Jarvis is now underrated. He has everything you want in a PG sans a consistent J

I was at the DLS vs CDH game to see Anim and Jarvis and was pleasantly surprised with Mar. He's all arms and legs with a non stop motor. Very disruptive on D. He's a competitor. Only a soph so more to come.

athletism vs skill and limited upside.

Some people have a hard time projecting bigs. You have to look at competition. Put Mar on an average Grand Rapids team like Illikainen was on and see what he would average against inferior competition. There are big men who are productive early but have limited upside say Theisen or the Bertram . Then there are athletic young guys like Mar and Theo John who are long and athletic and play good defense and rebound great and are learning on the offensive end. They are on stacked teams and they don't get a ton of scoring opportunities.

Completely agree. Its very hard to assess HS big men. Most HS coaches don't have a clue how to teach entry passes and H.S. offenses are almost always geared toward the guards since they develop earlier. If you have a HS big kid that is long, can leap, good motor, has soft hands, can rebound, driven to improve, and has the timing to block shots - he could be a pretty solid 3 star in my view and has the potential to develop into an excellent college player over 4-5 years. A high scoring big man in HS doesn't happen frequently for variety of reasons.

After watching Elliason and Howard for fours years, I don't want any more one dimensional players unless they are fabulous at that one skill.

He looks like a more skilled version of Sacar Anim (and taller). I wonder if we'll offer.

Watching his highlight reels he is a prototype of what Pitino has been recruiting. Long, athletic, can guard multiple positions and looks like he isn't afraid to rebound (highlight reel showed rebounds which can either mean thats a strength, or he's lacking other strengths....)

Sad watching his highlights and seeing Jarv in there...

Looks like a scrapper, but only one outside shot shown. And it's odd that a highlight vid of someone "long and athletic" doesn't show a single dunk. He had many wide open looks, some ahead of the pack, and he just lays it in. If Anim was suspect because he was "only a slasher," how is this kid any better. He doesn't look half the player as Anim.

Not that strong , not a leaper and not a great shooter.... Defense is his strength..Over rated as far as top 100 is concerned.

Versatility. Looks to be able to guard multiple positions. That's going to be huge going forward, NBA looks for an interchangeable team that can switch every screen. More pick n roll being run in the NCAA as well not to mention length for zone teams/pressure defense is a huge plus.

Hopefully his offense develops but his ranking is 100% on his length and alleged athleticism.

Mar vs Anim.

Well the difference between a 6-4 sr and a 6-7 Jr to be I suppose. Anim is mostly a 2 in size and can occassionally play the 3, not having an outside shot at that size is a detriment. Mar is 6-7 and could still be growing into a combo forward. Not having an outside shot at 6-7 or taller isn't as big of an issue. Different players, different positions.
