For the Gophers, the sudden rise from disappointment to re-inserting themselves into the Big Ten race has come mostly due to preventing the opponents from scoring. Michigan had the conference's scariest offense when the Wolverines came to Minneapolis last weekend. They left with two losses, two goals, and a tie atop the Big Ten standings, as the Gophers are amazingly back in the driver's seat to repeat their conference crown. But they know the pressure remains.

"We haven't done anything yet," Lucia told his team this week. "Great, we clawed our way back into contention but there's eight games to go and basically 40 percent of the Big Ten season is yet to be played. We can't make a step back. Obviously you're not going to win every game, but we need to continue to play the way we've been playing."

That means defense from all six men on the ice, not just goalie Adam Wilcox, who has allowed a total of six goals in their past four games, after being mediocre in January. The Gophers' last trip to Pennsylvania ended badly, with a loss in Philadelphia in the NCAA title game last spring. With Minneapolis still locked in the dead of winter the Gophers said this week they like the idea of getting out of town, and to the challenge of a team that's know for shooting from anywhere on the rink as it rapidly becomes "real" among the Big Ten powers.

"They're obviously growing and they're a legit contender right now," Gophers defenseman Mike Reilly said. "They've got some high-scoring guys and a great rink that they sell out every night. It's turned into a little bit of a rivalry, and we're looking forward to it."
