Gophers land two PWO commitments tonight

Division-I sports aren't allowed to give away merit aid to athletes. You get athletic money or you get no money.

Ivy league isn't technically div 1 football- they give no scholarships and they DO get aid

This renaissance in a league known as the Ancient Eight can be traced to something that has nothing to do with sports: new policies that have substantially enhanced financial aid for all admitted students, making it easier to recruit elite athletes, coaches and athletic administrators said.

The Ivy League does not award athletic scholarships, but led by endowment-rich members like Harvard, Yale and Princeton, the conference has spent hundreds of millions of dollars in additional need-based aid — with most of the universities all but eliminating student loans and essentially doubling the size of grants meant for middle-income families.

The University of Minnesota is a good school. It's not as if he turned down Yale for Glendale Community College. I'd respect whatever choices he made. He wants to play Big Ten football, and this is his chance to follow his dreams. He'll get a good education here if he wants it - and if Yale wanted him, I would guess he does. If he had chosen Yale, that would have been a good choice too.

Can't believe all the hate on the kid for choosing the UofM over Yale. Maybe we are a better institution for whatever he wants to major in. Maybe he decided Ivy league wasn't the right fit for him. MAYBE he wanted to play at a higher level of football. We are in the B1G ya know.

He could still end up getting a scholarship in the future. Be glad he chose us over another school and we didn't have to dish out a scholarship.

Not hate, just people looking at things from the bigger picture above and beyond football. Assuming that his future is not in the NFL (as is the cast for nearly all college football players), and he had the opportunity to get his school paid for by Yale in some way shape or form, the potential to earn a degree from an IVY league school is tough to pass up. That being said I am sure he made the decision he felt was best for him so glad to have him on board and hopefully he has a good sense of humor to fit in with the specialist crowd.

Schools like Yale give an immense amount of money in aid. I'd bet the average Yaley leaves with a similar amount of debt to the average Gopher.

Yale's endowment is worth roughly 9 times more than the U while having about a quarter of total enrollment to put things in perspective. I'm sure any athlete especially one with a 4.21 cum. gpa and a 31 ACT score should have no problems getting enough support to pay for a Yale education.

the cost of education isn't everything. And its not a given your career could be in better shape after college with a yale degree vs a UofM degree. It depends on the major. The U is world class in a lot of majors. Or maybe since the kid isn't from the east coast he doesn't want to go to the east coast. Just saying people should be happy a kid chose us for a PWO over a full scholarship to a top university instead of acting like he made the wrong choice. Why not just support the kid since we don't know his circumstances regarding his decision. Why not just say welcome, glad to have you can't wait to see you help us beat the damn badgers!

Can we stop with the which school is better thing we do ad nauseum and just be glad both guys selected the U? Welcome to both of them. Glad to have them on board

Untrue. The Ivy's are allowed to give merit aid to athletes since they have no athletic scholarships. My daughter had a friend who went to Harvard to play hockey and she received a lot of scholarship money to help pay for it.

+1 We do seem to like to beat a topic into the ground. After a while some of these strings begin to read like a never ending soap opera.

Well it is the off season... All the other MN sports are sucking ballz so I'm really lookin forward to gopher football but there aren't a lot of topics right now

Not sure where you got this information but it isn't true. My son is being recruited for track at a D1 level and we had an official visit to Marquette a week ago. They are coming up with a combination package of athletic/merit/need based scholarships for him.

Ivy league isn't for everyone. I won't pretend to know a ton about the current culture of a place like Yale and I'm sure it's not quite as upper crust as it once was but I would've hated going to school with a bunch of rich kids (stereotyping I know). Sure the rep and the education is great but some folks may prefer bigger schools or more middle class worlds

The kid probably feels confident in becoming the starting punter once Mortell leaves and will eventually earn a scholarship. That factors into the equation as well. Welcome to both of them!

turning down a full ride to Buffalo to be a PWO to the Gophers is akin to turning down an all expense paid trip to Greenland and paying for your own trip to Florida for vacation :cool02:

I'd rather go to Greenland :)

1. Yale's endowment (as of September, 2014) 23.9 billion,
2. MN's endowment (as of September 30, 2014) 2.1 billion,
3. Ivy League does not provide athletic scholarships,
4. Patriot League now offers athletic scholarships (began in 2013),
5. Yale is Division I classification in NCAA,
6. Ivy League does not participate in post season football and hasn't since prior to 1956,
7. Football is only Ivy sport where athletic teams do not compete for an NCAA Title, and
8. Both merit based scholarships and financial aid (need basis) are given at Ivy schools.

The Ivies are not for everyone either folks. It could just be a comfort level. I know other people who got admitted and offered scholarships (not full) who chose to go elsewhere. They felt the culture didn't feel right to them. People choose schools for lots of reasons.

So you are telling us Yale is well endowed.

Is this thread about the PWOs, or is it the ivy league info thread? Good info, but let's rope it in, you tangent launching banditos. :) ...peace be on to you...
