A thrilling 20-19 win over Illinois today. Should maintain #1 ranking.

WCCO: Meet The Gopher Who’s The No. 1 College Wrestler In The U.S.

Here is a glimmer of sports hope on the local landscape.

The Gopher wrestling team is ranked No. 1 in the country, with a local wrestler ranked No. 1 as an individual.

Dylan Ness knows what it means to work. He was state champion at Bloomington Kennedy High School.

Nowadays as a senior with the Gophers, he’d like to win that elusive team title.

“What’s gotta happen is we gotta have some of the guys who are lower ranked, younger guys to pull through,” Dylan said.

He’s been a national runner-up twice, and he’s considered a talented and free-spirited athlete. It’s his calling card.

“I think it’s the excitement, the way he wrestles. He has a feel for wrestling that most people don’t,” coach J. Robinson said. “He has an awareness … he can flip around and do things most people don’t.”

MN Daily: Gophers, Hawkeyes set for marquee matchup

When a sporting event needs to relocate to a larger venue because its original facility won’t fit enough fans, the quality of competition is likely top-notch.

That’ll be the case on Friday, when No. 1 Minnesota faces No. 2 Iowa in a marquee matchup at Williams Arena instead of the usual Sports Pavilion.

The Sports Pavilion can seat only 5,840 fans, compared with 14,625 at Williams Arena.

Head assistant coach Brandon Eggum said with each program’s history, fans know that it’s worth the drive to come watch.

“Anytime there is a meet between Minnesota and Iowa, fans know that both programs produce [wrestlers] that wrestle hard and [come] out wanting to compete,” Eggum said. “That kind of intensity really makes for a great dual.”

Des Moines Register: No gasoline necessary to fuel Iowa-Minnesota wrestling rivalry

J Robinson chuckled after the wisecrack left his mouth.

"Like they say, when you drive into Iowa, the IQ of both states go up," the 29th-year Minnesota wrestling coach said Thursday, tongue planted firmly in cheek, before adding: "That'll piss some of the Hawks off."

Robinson knows there's nothing wrong with stoking an old rivalry, not that this one needs added gasoline. Their heated history resumes Friday night, and fittingly, Iowa and Minnesota are ranked Nos. 1 and 2 in the nation for the 100th all-time dual meeting.

"The biggest rivalry in college wrestling," Robinson said.

Although, contrary to the joke, it'll be the Hawkeyes busing across state lines. Waiting for them at Williams Arena, known as "The Barn," will be more than 12,000 ticketed fans at the 6 p.m. dual to see which unbeaten team gains inside position for the Big Ten Conference dual championship.

"I like it, man. I mean, you've got to look at it this way," Iowa second-ranked 174-pounder Mike Evans said, each word slow and measured. "We're going to go into their arena. And we're going to hear a bunch of boos. And we're going to hear a huge crowd. And then we're going to shut them up.

"Ain't nothing better than that."

STrib: Much at stake in 100th meeting of Gophers/Iowa wrestling

The 100th meeting of the rivals features two 10-0 teams both claiming to be the nation’s best. The Hawkeyes use the NWCA/USA Today poll that ranks them No. 1 and the Gophers No. 2. Minnesota prefers the InterMat poll, which flip-flops the two. To further the who’s-number-one debate: InterMat’s tournament ranking has Iowa No. 1 and Minnesota No. 3.

Rankings will cease to matter starting at 6 p.m. Friday. Eight of the 10 matches could feature two ranked wrestlers. Iowa has 10 ranked individuals, seven rated fifth or higher. The Gophers have eight ranked, including two No. 1 wrestlers in Chris Dardanes and Ness.

“Having a great match this weekend would just make sure we’re heading in the right direction as the season ends,” Chris Dardanes said. “For us to win a national title, we gotta make sure we’re putting up a lot of points, making sure we’re getting falls when guys are on their backs, or getting that extra take down to get that major decision. Bonus points are really going to be what separates us from other teams.”

Quad City Times: Hawkeyes, Gophers ready for 'epic' dual

Cory Clark understands what is at stake.

In a match filled will marquee matchups, the fifth-ranked Iowa 133-pounder relishes everything about the opportunity to face Minnesota’s top-ranked Chris Dardanes on the unbeaten Golden Gopher senior’s turf on Friday.

“When you get a chance to take on the No. 1 guy, it’s a chance to make a statement by getting it done,’’ Clark said. “That’s not only going out to win, but going out to open it up, wrestle my match and control it from start to finish.’’

He’s not the only Hawkeye thinking that way as top-ranked Iowa prepares to visit second-rated Minnesota in a 6 p.m. dual today at Williams Arena.

“If we want to be No. 1 right now, we’ve got a chance to prove it,’’ second-ranked Iowa 174-pounder Mike Evans said. “We’ve got to go win it, walk into an arena where we’ll hear a bunch of boos. We’re going to hear a huge crowd, then we’re going to shut them up. There’s nothing better than that.’’
