All Things Matthew Hurt Thread (Rochester JM, Class of 2019)

I've seen him play once. It was a blowout so he didn't do much but he looks to me like an absolute perfect 4 man. Good range, runs the floor, goes inside, nimble enough to guard on the outside on ball screens and still get back to defend the paint.

Yeah there's a lot to like.

BuiltBadgers lecture about how we have no chance because the almighty Tony Bennett has bestowed an offer in 3, 2, 1...

Thanks for your kind words. A UVA offer is a good thing. They are recruiting at a very high level on both skills and character. They still must offer early as they are not a blue blood who can afford to wait. The Hurt family will value a offer from UVA. Parents love Bennett and having a child get into UVA is a big deal. The school and facilities are top notch. Why all the Bennett hate. Guys like him are really good teachers to our youth.

Have you swallowed enough of Tony's Seaman to collect enough of his DNA and are now a Tony Bennett clone?

Value an offer they could care less about? Is the game accumulate all the offers you can for show or pick the school close to home with your brother on it that you like the staff and program's direction.? Gophers have a decent season it's a slam dunk maybe even if they don't.

Awesome. Can't wait to see Hurt add weight too and add another dimension to his game, we're talking about a top 10 recruit in his class right here.

per STrib:

‘Little’ brother

Hurt’s devotion to basketball began innocently enough in elementary school. After his eighth-grade year, the hobby exploded into passion. The routines began with early mornings and late nights.

Younger brother Matthew was along for the ride then, often being dragged to the gym with Michael.

As those early weeks and months went by, with Michael quietly encouraging his younger brother, Matthew’s immense talent emerged. Both lanky brothers were sprouting upward and outward quickly — Michael has size 15 shoes, Matthew size 17. Both could shoot. But things came easier for Matthew. Michael, 18, the more outgoing and serious of the two, would key up a laser focus for every rep of every drill. Matthew, 16, the quieter, more laid-back brother, could saunter in the gym, goof around and drop jaws.

An incoming sophomore at Rochester John Marshall, Matthew got his first scholarship offer, from Iowa State, in eighth grade. When he came home for dinner that night, his mom, Jenny, immediately wagged her finger at him.

“Don’t you go getting a big head now,” she said.

Last year, Iowa coach Fran McCaffery saw Matthew, who is 6-9, at an open gym and told him he was going to end up being an NBA lottery pick. This spring, Xavier coach Chris Mack saw Matthew at a tournament and thought he must be a top-50 player. When he scanned the 2017 rankings, he didn’t see his name. Then the reality hit him: Matthew was in the 2019 class. He was a freshman.

We really need to lock up Matthew. His brother needs a suite in the new practice facility.

Are there dorm rooms in the new Athlete's village? You would think that would be awesome to live right by the gym, weight and tutoring facilities.

Is it possible that it would be better from a Gopher perspective in an effort to land Matthew that Richard Pitino moves on sooner than later? I only ask because of player development or the potentially lack of it when he watches his own brothers development? Illinois has the same situation going on with the Finke bros. Many on the IB have expressed this sentiment.

wouldn't it be better for all if Pitino didn't move anywhere?

Has there been any talk about Michael Hurt taking a redshirt year, so he could have 3 total years to play with Matthew? If he is serious about medical school then taking a bit more time with his classes and getting a graduate degree might not be a bad thing.

If Matthew is as good as billed he's not spending 3 years in college.

Exactly- as Kaler (whom I'm not a big fan of) said- changing coaches every four years is not a formula for success. Best scenario for actual Gopher fans is for Pitino to have a really good fall recruiting class, a solid year on and off the court and to stay on here for a number of years to come. Let's build something here instead of constantly panicking and shopping around for a coach to save us. He can get this done.

Sort of depends. We'll see if he can coach this year. I don't get the impression that any recruits have picked MN or are considering MN specifically because of him.

So recruits are coming here from Texas, Florida, and Arkansas for our warmer winters...
