Go Gophers!!

That second tweet......wonderful

Because some prefer to be on a team that is likely to win more and be in the tournament (i.e. NBA showcase) vs. placing more weight on other factors like culture, coach, region, closeness to home, and college major.

No, featured means the coach tells you it's your team...if you are a point guard... you are our leader, you make the decisions, I trust and believe in you...it's your team. If you are shooter, you'll get 30 shots a game...we'll build our offense around you, we'll live and celebrate with your success. If you are a post...you promise 30 paint touches a game. That's what I mean by featured and that's why 7 guys got drafted in the NBA on teams that didn't make the tournament. Those teams showcased the elite performer the entire season...those teams likely don't have the other parts to be a solid team...but the coach and player had fun.
That's why an NBA talent would go somewhere other than Duke or Kentucky etc... The goal is to play in the NBA. If you are already at the very top...it doesn't matter if you go to Duke or KY...it might even be insurance...you will still be viewed on potential versus being showcased/featured and not performing to high expectations.
No one and done cares about a college major etc

If college coaches are promising 30 shots per game, they are blowing some big-time smoke. 30 shots a game is Pistol Pete Maravich country and likely only a few others. Check out this link. It goes back 11 seasons.

If you are curious out more players you can check on individual players here: https://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/players/

I'm sure 30 was just used to represent a large number that is the highest on the team by a significant amount.

per Zags: Class of 2019 star Matthew Hurt visits Duke, North Carolina, hosts Kansas

Matthew Hurt, the 6-foot-9 forward from Rochester (MN) John Marshall High, had an eventful recruiting weekend with unofficial visits to both Duke and North Carolina.

The No. 5 player in the 2019 ESPN 60, Hurt had previously visited Kentucky and Indiana in September.

On Monday, Kansas coach Bill Self and his entire staff flew in and sat down with Hurt, his father, Richard, told ZAGSBLOG. It was Self’s second visit to see Hurt inside a month. (Self and the Kansas staff also visited with 2018 point guard Quentin Grimes.)

“They talked about their success with big guards/wings over the years like [Andrew] Wiggins, [Kelly] Oubre, [Josh] Jackson, etc.,” Richard Hurt said “Also said they have a way of getting guys out of their comfort zone to help them achieve success at the next level. It was a good visit and conversation.”

Hurt will trip to Kansas Nov. 17 for the South Dakota State game.

“We did the ‘Late Night in the Phog’ deal last year,” Richard said. “I think we’re going to go down in mid-November to a game at Kansas against South Dakota State.”

As for the Duke trip on Friday, Hurt was on campus for “Countdown to Craziness” when 2018 star Zion Williamson visited along with 2019 guys like Armando Bacot and Joey Baker and 2020 Isaiah Todd.

“I think the message was not just in words but also what we saw in the scrimmage at Duke, I think the coaches wanted to point out how he would fit in,” Richard said. “Coach K asked Matthew after the scrimmage when we were meeting with him in the office was, ‘Who do you see that’s out there that’s like you?'”

While Matthew Hurt was processing the answer, his dad said, Coach K said, “The answer is nobody. We’ve got a talented team, we’ve got a big team. But there’s nobody that has your versatility, that can go inside/outside and do the things that you can do.”

Said Richard: “And that’s not a knock on any of the players that he has because Marvin Bagley is scary good, and I’ll be surprised if Grayson Allen doesn’t have a tremendous season. And Gary Trent is an elite scorer. Then you got Wendell Carter, [Marques] Bolden, Trevon Duval and all the different options. But [Coach K] said, ‘There’s nobody out there than can do what you do.”

Hurt also spent some time with the 6-5 Williamson, who was coming off a Kentucky visit for “Big Blue Madness” before the Duke visit. Williamson is also considering Kansas, UCLA, South Carolina and Clemson.

“Matthew and he interacted a little bit,” Richard said of Williamson. “I talked to his stepdad and his mom.”
As for the message at Duke, Richard said: “Just seeing the coaches wanting to show A) how special a place it was and B) where he could fit in and where the freedom that they allow their guys would fit him tremendously.”

On Saturday, Hurt spent the day at North Carolina, the reigning NCAA champions who are also prioritizing him in the Class of 2019.

That visit included having dinner with head coach Roy Williams and associate head coach Hubert Davis and watching Game 6 of the Yankees-Astros series on TV.

“Coach Williams wanted Matthew to kind of watch Luke May a little bit,” Richard said. “He said, ‘Look may not have your talent but he’s got the versatility where he can go inside and go outside, so watch him in practice.”

He added: “It was a great trip overall, it allowed Matthew to see two places that I think will be in there at the end.”

Kentucky is also working hard for Hurt, who visited in September but has not yet officially received an offer. Kentucky coach John Calipari is expected to visit in December.

On the visit the week before “Big Blue Madness,” Hurt was greeted like a star by Kentucky fans.

“On that visit alone he probably signed about 20 autographs and probably took another dozen or so photos with fans,” Richard said.

Meantime, Matthew has no official list, but the schools working hardest, his dad said, include Duke, North Carolina, Kansas, Kentucky, UCLA, Minnesota, Indiana, Iowa and Wisconsin.

“Those are the ones that are most active right now,” his dad said. “It’s really kind of narrowed its focus.”

We've got no shot here do we? I do not want to be strung along until announcement day like what happened with Tyus, only to be told "Minnesota was my second choice."

Tyus didn’t string us along at all. We knew we had no shot with him his freshman hear of HS

Could be wrong, but there is nothing I can see to indicate we have a chance, other than people making the connection to his brother at U. Personally, I don't think that means as much as people like to think.

I mean, he’s from Minnesota so there is that.

Could tell from the jump his dad was going to enjoy the recruiting process. May have to throw a coaching job offer his way.

It's never bothered me that this young man will probably become the modern version of Nick Horvath... He'll win Mr. Minnesota Basketball, he'll go play for a talented Blue Blood, he'll win a NCAA Championship, he'll play pro ball in a far away land. That's a great life and I wish the kid well on that journey. What does bother me is the fact that this coaching regime used one of the finite number of scholarships on his older brother who is NOT a B1G caliber player. That decision was made pretty early in their tenure so I should give the benefit of the doubt, but Michael Hurt is a big swing-and-a-miss. He ought to be playing for Winona St.

Really? Take it easy. Michael was a good signing considering where the program was. He is just starti ng his soph season and has a 4th yr and a 3rd yr guy(who could be all b1g) ahead of him. I think he will be a solid player who could be seasoned enough to start by sr yr. That's good enough for me.

Regarding Matthew, I think they would have signed Michael regardless. However, we have no shot with him from what I've heard around town down here. Time to move on.

Only one argument might work. If we have the talent to be a Sweet 16 team in 2019 and Coach P can tell him that with him doing his one and one at the U he could possible bring a championship (Big Ten and NCAA) home with his brother on the team and there is no way his brother will win one without him on the team. In essence, spend your one year in college helping your brother achieve something he won't be able to without your help. You can get drafted in the lottery from MN just as easily as you can from Duke or Cheaters U, but you can't do it with your brother by your side and a ring on his finger anywhere but the U.

That’s a terrible take.

I believe we have a shot, but it's a long shot, but MN needs to pursue it. You can't just ignore talent in your backyard even if it's unlikely, you just can't

If nobody leaves early, it’s a legit pitch. You’d have Jelly (jr), Coffey (sr), Matt Hurt (fr), Curry (jr), Oturu (so) plus shooters like Kalscheur, Mike Hurt and Harris off the bench, and you’d think we could add one or two more top level players that would want to join that group.

That would be a serious collection of talent. Size, skill, experience, athleticism... would have it all. Would be an awesome team.

Agreed, that would be a seriously fun team.

This shows that if you are not a one and done school all it takes is one top recruit per class to have a pretty good team.

Matthew Hurt will be attending the scrimmage this week according to RJ.

I can't recall if this has been talked about before on here, but with Matthews age do you think it is possible that he reclassifies?

Yeah, i was on 247 and didn't realize he was pretty old for his grade. I believe he will be 18 by the time JM is done with the school year. Since age is usually associated with the potential of a player, it might seem as a benefit for Hurt and his NBA draft stock having that extra year. Unless he transferred from Rochester after the school year, it doesn't seem like another year of playing in the Big 9 would be beneficial to a top 5 player in the country.

Its just something i found kind of interesting to think about

I see that Duke got a commitment for 2019 from the No. 13 player in the class - Joey Baker, 6-7, 195 PF. Since he appears to be a similar size and position to Matthew, does anyone think this deters him from Duke at all?

I was thinking and hoping this would be the case too but probably not. In video, Baker looks a bit more like a true SF that probably won't grow into the combo forward that can bang in the low post that K likes (Jabari Parker, Jayson Tatum, Justice Winslow etc). Hurt really fits that mold but one positive is Vernon Carey seems to have a lot of interest in Duke. He'll have preference over Hurt. I get the feeling Matthew's going to land somewhere in the Midwest. Whether that's Kansas, Indiana or Minnesota. Time will tell.

per Shama:

Pitino has reportedly offered a scholarship to Hopkins junior power forward Zeke Nnjai. While Nnjai is a talented and coveted recruit, Gopher fans might wonder if this is an acknowledgement it’s unlikely Minnesota can also land Rochester John Marshall superstar power forward Matthew Hurt in its 2019 recruiting class.
