per Sandell:

The Gophers are walking a thin line when it comes to the ramifications of Saturday's game. A win would elevate Kill's program to improbable new heights in the Big Ten championship game in Indianapolis. On the other hand, a loss, no matter how close or how well-fought, would cast the Gophers in a state of "what if?" For Minnesota to stay on the upward trajectory Kill has set into motion, the Gophers have to continue to defy the norm.

As of late, that norm has involved losing to Wisconsin. Not only has it been more than a decade since the Gophers were in command of Paul Bunyan's Axe, but it has also been 20 years since Minnesota last won in Madison.

"This is supposed to be a rivalry," Kill said. "You have to win to make it a rivalry."

This time around, beyond just bragging rights, the border battle's implications couldn't get much higher for either side.
