So, is the $5 Bits of Chair Trophy (otherwise known as the Chair) going to become an official trophy? If Goldy has anything to say about it, I think the answer will be yes! Only time will tell if the U (and Nebraska) will join in and officially embrace the best trophy of the internet era. via@GoldytheGopher UPDATE: Wikipedia says it's one of the trophies.

While I find it somewhat funny, I hope it doesn't become an actual trophy for the players. We have enough and playing for 5 in one year would take away from the original 3.

I would be ok with a Nebraska trophy as Michigan and Penn State won't be every year. I'd rather drop Penn State for Nebraska.

We just need to get rid of that other "broken trophy" the bell. Problem solved.

Drop Penn State trophy, add this one.

I think it would be a great idea as a "tongue in cheek" sort of prize. They could have a lot of fun with it and it would be fun to keep it as a folklore, anti-Trophy. Since there is no university endorsement; the sky would be the limit as to what you could do with it.

One suggestion: A "Flat-Stanley" picture contest by the fans.

Put me in the drop the Penn State trophy camp.

If we want to cheapen the axe jug and pig then sure let's play up the broken chair.

I like the idea that it stays an unofficial trophy for the fans/mascots. With that being the origin of the trophy, I could see it being brought out for the week of the game, talked about online between fanbases, tweeted about by goldy and faux pelini, etc.

Or, after seeing the picture of Peter Mortell hoisting the trophy, it could be deemed a "specialists" trophy. There could be smack talk between the MN specialists and the Nebby specialists, and to the winners go the chair!

Just a few ideas....

I would hate to see it become official but would love to see it stick around. Let it be a fun Mascot thing but don't try to make it into anything that would rival the Jug, Axe, or Floyd. And like others have said I would love to see them retire the Bell. It was a decent idea at the time to commemorate PSU joining the conference but with not playing them every year and the lack of longtime history it really is a pretty worthless trophy at this point that neither team seems to care that much about. It is a big deal to go win the Axe, Jug, or Pig but winning the Bell doesn't have nearly the same impact on the teams or the fans.

Totally agree.

I get why people think this cheapens the big 3, but IMO this is a way more legit than the Bell. This has an actual story rooted in the fans, while the Bell was completely made up and nobody cares other than it's a nice reminder that we are in a better place than PSU at the moment.

And there is actually a possible rivalry given the divisions and our proximity. Does anyone really care about PSU any more than any other non-rivalry B1G team?

It would be great if it remained an underground, between mascot thing for the next 10-20 years, then is elevated, due in large part to an ongoing highly competitive series between the teams, to a treasured trophy for the generation that grew up with social media. Social media created this trophy.

Let The Broken Chair Trophy be a fun addition with Nebraska, but let the mascots do it. It started that way, keep it that way. Let's call it The Levity Trophy.

This is the Peoples Trophy. Who gives a sh1t if it gets adopted by NCAA or the actual universities. If we care about it, it will stay. If it loses traction during the offseason and goes away, then it does as it should.

This is how sh1t like this happens and in 20 years of playing for "The Chair" maybe NCAA will acknowledge it, and at that time it really will be a true rivalry trophy. I don't think the Jug/Axe/Pig were officially adopted by the teams as a "trophy" in year one anyway.

Rivalries grow organically you cannot force me to hate Nebraska. They have to steal something I love ie a chari.

If we want to cheapen the axe jug and pig then sure let's play up the broken chair.

If playing for the Chair cheapens playing for the Axe (1948), does playing for the Axe cheapen playing for the Pig (1935) which may have cheapened playing for the Bacon (1930) and all of these which cheapened playing for the Jug (1909, it was left behind in 1903 but first played for in 1909). It seems to me the Chair is most like the Jug in how it came about. Not wanted it to be played for is a valid opinion, and I do respect it and would feel the same if it was another Bell, but I for one like the Chair.

I agree with much of what others have said on this topic.

Retire the Victory Bell. Nobody cares and it is an example of how NOT to have a rivalry trophy. I feel like it, more than anything, waters down the Gophers real rivalries.

I'm not sold on the bits of chair thing, but what I have seen so far is funny and enjoyable. Why not keep it around and let it be a unique trophy that is claimed by the mascots, team equipment managers, ect, after a win in the NE/MN series?

I don't think it would resonate or last as yet another trophy for the players to race across the field for.

2 things

at best, it is a sweet bust up of the new WI-NE trophy. (how they overlooked a wine bottle is beyond me)

at worst its a 2 day late nov. chuckle.

Can someone smart do one of those online petition things.....share it with Penn State fans....and we can retire that 'dumb' bell?

I'm fine if they keep it as an unoficial trophy with Nebraska even if the University's do not recognize it. To me Nebraska is already a rival and a tough opponent that were going to be butting heads with for many seasons to come.
Who do we have more in common with and will play the most being a division opponent PSU or Nebraska? We will likely only play Penn State and Michigan now twice every five years.
We have played Nebraska a lot more even non-conference than we ever have Penn State. To me rivalry's are born of respect, some dislike and close hard fought games, that build tradition and as a fan looking forward to playing an opponent. Nebraska has whipped us plenty, Wisconsin has whipped us pretty good a few times in the last five years, doesn't lesson the enthusiasm for wanting to play those teams and have the Gophers beat them. For me Minnesota and Nebraska are already rivals plain and simple.

I agree retire the bell but replace it with something more like MN and PENN

We should boot the Governors victory bell, we were the first opponents for Penns State and have had some really good games with those guys over years including the year where they were number 1 and referees hosed the Gophers. Although not an intense rivalry it is still fun to have one across Big 10 divisions like Michigan and Penn State.
I like the "train whistle" idea and a trophy like that would make a lot more sense than some stupid Governors bell anyways. Retire it and donate it the Bell to the college hall of fame.

The real test of the Chair will come when Nebraska beats us. If they rush over to get the chair, it's on, whether it actually becomes "official" will be irrelevant. We had it on the sidelines, we had the players hoisting it, we have the media talking about it, it starts to look like a real rivalry trophy. Of course, if Nebraska accepts the trophy when the next time they beat us (may it be a while!), the Gophers would want it back the next time they turn around and beat Nebraska.

keep them all

why not since several will be played for seldom and the others yearly

the stories are always their and while the Bell is not great it still represents the first ever PSU game in the big ten with a school that has more history than most schools

Maybe we'll just set it by the winning team's tunnel to avoid conflict.

The only problem with the Chair is that Pelini's mug is on it, and it is about Pelini's legendary temper. It only has life as long as he lasts, which every Thanksgiving seems day-to-day. If Pelini had actually broken the chair, then it could take on a life of its own. Anyhow, I think Goldy and fans should be in charge of creating all future trophies.
