2014-2015 Gopher Women's Season Thread!

No - but you move your feet on defense. You don't stand around and let the offense do anything that they want to do. On offense, you have the best post player in the conference. If you're going to run up and down the floor and not include her in the offense, you're wasting her talents and going to wear her out and have her on the bench where you have no replacement for her. They need to walk it up the floor, unless they get a run out and an easy lay up, limit their turnovers, and get the ball inside either off the wing or the high post.

Another expert shows no expertise.

Do you do anything but come onto this thread and bitch and act like you know more about the game than these coaches do? That's basically what you do here. Ignore all the good stuff accomplished this year and rip away. New coach, best player goes down, weak guards, little bench strength, but you're giving us gems like "move your feet' and "need to walk it up." Sure Bluder couldn't get a defense set up to surround AZB even more if we slowed it down. Guessing your 8th grade traveling team is awesome with Gino the Second at the helm.

+1 buddy. I think right now they're emotionally spent. They're playing basically 7 ladies. I think the coaches know until they get some depth they literally have to try and out offense everybody. Tough to do on a off shooting night.

So you are saying that our GH experts don't understand the meaning of "depth" because in their minds the same 5 players should be able to go 40 minutes every game and not need breaks?

Gophers postgame: Doomed by defense

All signs indicated the Gophers would have to be at their best to beat Iowa on Sunday. The Hawkeyes had an 18-game winning streak at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. A crowd of 9,726 turned out to celebrate four well-loved seniors, and Iowa was eager to get some revenge for its 93-80 loss to the Gophers a couple of weeks ago when Amanda Zahui B. had an historic 39-point, 29-rebound performance.

But too many lapses hurt the Gophers for the second game in a row, sending them to the Big Ten tournament with a two-game losing streak. They played well in spurts during a 92-76 victory, rallying after a horrible start, but their inability to limit Iowa's three-point specialists wrecked their chances. Despite coach Marlene Stollings emphasizing the importance of defending the three, the Gophers couldn't keep up with Iowa's crisp ball movement and well-oiled offense.

They really do need points from Wagner. The last two games she's been 1-12 and 2-10 respectfully. This could be a case of " freshmanitis" . I've never been a zone or match up zone advocate. But if you don't have the bodies to play person to person you're relegated to zone defenses. Give the Gophers two more ladies like Kelly and A. your match up zone would be more effective and B. you can mix in some person to person. Case in point, watch Maryland. Frese plays basically the same defense as Stollings, but she has better athletes to cover the point of attack. You can teach position on defense, but you can't teach quickness. Give the staff and the girls credit for what they've accomplished this year. After losing Banham they could've completely tanked it.

Amanda Zahui: B1G POY (Media), unanimous 1st team All-B1G
Shae Kelley: 1st team All-B1G (Media)
Carlie Wagner: B1G All-Freshman Team

Watching opponents sink 3s against Gopher defenses at incredulous paces is tough.

Did a quick look and they are tied for 4th highest 3 point % allowed. Better than I thought it would be. Nebraska and Iowa are just below us which is surprising also. Get the impression with the women it is sort of hot or cold a lot of times. Beginning to think it's not so much the defense. Maryland is the only good team that jumped out as holding opponents down. Best in the league.

U women's basketball team follows Stollings' lead

A believer in an up-tempo style and speedy success, Marlene Stollings set out to change the culture of Gophers women’s basketball. And she did.

The magnitude of the task became clear on a summer afternoon in Williams Arena, in the geometry of a simple basketball drill. Gophers coach Marlene Stollings, on the job for only a few months, asked her team to run a three-player weave that should have involved three passes.

“They couldn’t do it in less than five,” Stollings said. “And it took a few weeks to get it to three.”

I think I saw Aubrey on the bench. Did she make the trip?

Ladies off to nice start. Mullaney already with 7 assists

Purdue storming out of the gates after halftime. Lead is only 48-44 now.

Boilers are exposing the smaller guard getting stuck below the basket on defense when the zone shifts.

Gophers just wasted a big lead that they worked so hard to get within a matter of minutes here in the second half.

Hirt should have played in the first half. Given a breather

Zahui's been out for too long. About time she's back in!

The front court is doing its best to push us to a win despite the awful play of our guards, once again.

Wagner and Bailey are way off tonight.

Those two are 2-16 from three. You can't keep pulling if they aren't going down. Have to play smarter. Thankfully Mullaney's been pretty solid despite the early turnovers.

74-70 Gophers with a minute left. It's definitely been the Zahui Kelley Wagner show down the stretch (actually, the whole night for the matter).

Zahui fouls out. 76-70 with 38 seconds left.

Interesting. Didn't realize Zahui is 2 rebounds away from the B1G single-season rebounding record! She'll get that tomorrow assuming the Gophers finish this one off.

WHEW. That was way too close. Thank you Kayla for hitting 4 big FT's down the stretch!

Media POY v. Coaches POY tomorrow.

Media POY v. Coaches POY tomorrow.

First meeting

Mitchell: 36 points, 7 rebounds, 9 3's in 38 minutes
Zahui B.: 14 points, 8 rebounds, 1 block, 5 fouls in 23 minutes

Shae Kelley: 29 points, 18 rebounds
Wagner - 3 for 17, 0-7 from 3

Outrebounded OSU 60-40

Somehow won that game in Columbus

Last night's game was a microcosm of the season. They were terrific at times, and at other times they lacked energy and looked tired. They defended decently down the stretch of the game, but for most of the night the defense was porous.

They attempt way too many 3's. That's practically all Bailey shoots (0-6 last night). They usually shoot close to 50% on 2's. I know Stollings game is run and gun, but I think they need to slow it down a bit and take higher percentage shots.
