According to sources, expect 3M to become a corporate contributor to the $190 million campaign to improve Gophers’ facilities, and also look for ground to be broken next spring for a new on-campus indoor football practice facility.

Effective fundraising—mostly still behind the scenes—is being done by the Gophers’ Athletic Department and well-connected volunteers. An announcement is expected that 3M will join Land O’Lakes as a major contributor to the fundraising campaign. LOL has made a $25 million commitment to support a wide range of University of Minnesota activities, but the centerpiece will be building the Intercollegiate Athletics Center for Excellence that will benefit over 700 student-athletes through academics and nutrition.

Among projects expected to receive priority in the master facilities plan is the new football practice building, perhaps costing $70 million. Sources told Sports Headliners they predict shovels in the ground for the football building by next spring.

Very good news. They deserve credit over there for bringing Nanne on to work his friends and twist some arms out there to get those checks written.
 

I am all for Corporate sponsorship. But one thing bothers me. The amounts of money we are talking is an enormous amount from their profits, yet numerous employees of theirs still work for subservient pay and need food stamps to help them with everyday life.

3M's net income was $1.3B last quarter. Tens of millions is a drop in the bucket, not an enormous amount.
 




With the way the Vikings are handling their business, some companies may have sponsorship openings (Hi Radisson). :)
 

This is no different than naming rights to a stadium or arena, or their normal marketing budget.

Come on Dr Don, your nativity on this is funny. All of these corporations file away a portion of their profits to donate to various causes. It helps with good will, and is a tax break. 3M is not like a Walmart that counts on government subsidies to pay their employees ($700K per store). 3M will not be hurt by supporing the U who has supplied thousands of graduates for them to hire. They may even get to name one of the buildings.

They're sponsorships, not donations. They're attempting to make money with this deal. Their charitable giving is not shifting from the poor to the gophers.

The McKnight Football Practice Facility sounds nice.
 

Most/many responsible corporations put money back into the 'community'. Now we hope other corps will try to 'keep up with the Jones'.

Who do you talk to? 3M is one of the best if not the best paying companies in the state. Hiring people away from them is extremely expensive.
I apologize in advance for being rude, but you might actually think about whether you actually know something about an issue before making declarative ststements.
 

It sure is easy to insult, criticize, and complain.

I'm excited to see what 3M does.

But $70 million for a football practice facility? Isn't that the figure that Sid mentioned and was ridiculed for?
