per KARE 11:

If it takes a village to "raise" a child, then it takes Gopher Nation to help heal one.

Casey O'Brien has been in the fight of his life since last fall, when the Cretin-Derham Hall freshman quarterback complained of severe pain in his knee.

He was diagnosed with a rare bone cancer and underwent 24 rounds of chemotherapy and endured a seven hour surgery to have the cancer removed and his left knee replaced.

Through it all, this St. Paul teenager has kept a positive attitude and relied on the strength of his family and his extended "Gopher" family.

Casey is the son of Dan O'Brien, an associate athletic director at the University of Minnesota.

Dan and head football coach Jerry Kill are very close. In fact Jerry was in the room when a University of Minnesota doctor told Dan his son had cancer.

Casey's strength has inspired everyone around him. He is now cancer free and football saved his life.
