Sporting News: Minnesota, Iggy Azalea wants you to 'Do the Gopher'

Iggy Azalea and the Minnesota Golden Gophers football team are two things you would never expect to be said in the same sentence. But here we are.

The popular Australian hip-hop artist and girlfriend of Lakers' guard Nick Young is performed at Minnesota's homecoming this weekend, and the athletic department has joined her in providing a rather unexpected PSA.

The Golden Gophers beat Purdue 39-38 to move to 6-1 on the season and was ranked No. 24 in the latest coaches poll.

The program has gotten little to no national attention this season, in part to the poor play from the Big Ten conference across the board as well as the fact that, well, it's Minnesota. Head coach Jerry Kill isn't exactly lighting up the press conference with hot takes, nor is he inviting Rich Homie Quan into the locker room to celebrate with players.

Iggy Azalea is one of the most popular people in music right now. She's the Mississippi State of music. To team up with Minnesota is not necessarily a bad choice, it's just a very bizarre combination.

Sadly, it does not appear as if there is video of Jerry Kill and Iggy Azalea doing 'The Gopher" this weekend, which was a huge missed opportunity for the program.

Concert was a fun time, TCF is an interesting venue for a concert and the crowd was good.

You can't buy good press like this....

The University of Minnesota had no trouble selling out of tickets for Friday’s homecoming concert with rapper Iggy Azalea.

But some students are angry with the school’s decision to invite Azalea to campus, claiming the “Fancy” singer has posted racist and homophobic comments on social media and has engaged in cultural appropriation that’s offensive to some.

As of Oct. 7, one student had written a formal complaint to Student Unions and Activities about the performer.

In the complaint, the student wrote that Azalea is a “racist, homophobic, self-entitled person who appropriates culture in offensive ways.”

By allowing Azalea to perform, the student wrote, the University is showing tolerance for those behaviors.

WHERE WAS GOVENOR MARK DAYTON WHEN HE WAS NEEDED?!
