He's basically saying that the coaching staff hasn't received a commitment from James yet but likely will soon.

James was just interviewed on 740 the fan in Fargo and announced that he has committed to Minnesota and said he knew it was kind of out there already. He said it came down to Minnesota and NDSU and he was real excited that the Gophers were recruiting him as a RB rather than a LB.

Suck it Bison. And the Gophers have still never lost a recruit to NDSU.

Are kids really this naive? Any staff that has half a brain (and Kill's clearly does in this regard) will tell any recruit they will get a shot to play the position they want to in college. So if this kid wants a shot at RB then heck yeah in the recruiting process you say he will get the chance even if ultimately you are looking at him at a different position.

Who knows where he will ultimately end up, gut would say it is probably LB but who knows till he gets on campus and shows what he can do. The main hope is that like D. Jones the kid is smart enough to see that his desired position might not be the best fit for him at the next level and accepts the position change (assuming that is what happens).

Or maybe he will end up like Marion Barber and the coaches accept rb is the position for him. No loss in letting kids try in the position they want to play.

Plenty of recruits publicly commit before they have contacted the coaching staff. IIRC Andrew Wiggins didn't even have any contact with the coaching staff until several days after his announcement.

Agreed most staffs are smart enough if they really want a guy to give him a chance at his desired position first and if they feel they need to make a change they can do it later. James did say in the interview that he never really was interested in Nebraska very much because they were looking at him as a LB rather than RB. I do think James could end up sticking at RB or maybe even FB for the Gophers rather than moving to LB.

Exactly. I honestly believe they will give him a shot at RB, would be foolish not to, even if they are pretty sure he will end up somewhere else on the field. Guys like Barber don't come around often but you never know until you give them a chance. And of course none of us has any clue what their opinion is in regards to his ultimate position, all we know is they feel he is worthy of a scholarship.

Congrats to JJ! Smart move. Great for all Gopher fans, too!

He's figured out that just the opportunity and chance to run out through the tunnel at the likes of: The Shoe, The Big House, The Camp, Happy Valley, Memorial Stadium (two of them), Kinnick, and yes, TCF (!), and compete at the highest level trumps trips to those other "cathedrals of college football" in places like Terra Haute, Carbondale, and Macomb.

He realizes that playing - and competing - against the highest level 11 (or 12) weeks out of 12 - trumps doing so once every fall.

He's smart enough to figure out that given the above, and finishing 8-4, or even 6-6, is more respectable than steam-rollering the likes of Stephen F. Austin, Wofford, and Coastal Carolina and the rest of the vaunted MVC slate. Remember, 10,000 times more has been written about even the failed attempts to summit Everest - than has been written about successful scalings of Mt. Shasta.

Today, in Fargo they are trumpeting and celebrating a newly announced home-and home meeting with . . . North Dakota. IN stark contrast, JJ can go out an anticipate the home-and-home series to come with the likes of TCU and Oregon State - and the others that are surely coming.

National TV for at least 11 games a year.

Best of all for JJ - a BIG education/degree, something that people will know and respect all over the United States - and for the rest of his life.

Welcome aboard !!!

News release at www.inforum.com says he picked Gophers over NDSU, but the decision was tough.

Everything spermman said about advantages of U of M over NDSU is right on the money. Games in front of 50 to 100 thou certainly is more adrenalin pumping than a full house of obnoxious Bison that number 17 to 18 thou.

Didn't the staff tell Drayton Carlberg that we want him only as an OL, not as his preferred position of DL?

NDSU Coeds are pompous.
MSU Moorhead Coeds look at their feet when walking.
Concordia-Moorhead Coeds wash your windshield.

The best running back from Fargo played for Fargo Central, and was a junior on the 1961 team. A unassuming man, he went on to work for Mrs. Clarks Foods in Iowa. Dave Mulholland left this world too early, but certainly a Great Golden Gopher.

They are so pissed up in in Bum Fuch North Dakota that the Fargo Rag removed the news from the front page of the Fargo Forum.

Instead of wishing the kid good luck in the big time, they whine like a bunch of pussies.

Yep that kind of thing never happens here when a local kid spurns the Gophers for another place. Everyone is always so gracious with their well wishes for the kid....

Ain't that the truth. A good kid leaves us, we cooled on him. A good kid comes to us, they cooled on him.

Can he be the next Mike Alstot, the Purdue fullback? Mike was heavier, but the same height.

For some stupid reason (morbid curiosity) I went to the NDSU football forum to see the reaction. They're taking this really, really well. Lots of well-wishes and people that understand the allure of playing for a Big Ten team.

Don't get me wrong, they're still scum. But at least they're scum that's occasionally reasonable and rational; unlike the scum from the East.

I'm interested to see how he does at RB. Welcome!

Yeah, I',m with you. I think the staff is recruiting this kid to play RB, and not using it as a carrot to get an LB in the fold.

They like the power run game. He's Roderick Williams eventual replacement and will be able to redshirt. Always nice to have a Back that can thump some skull. I would guess they see an athletic looking bowling ball, and figure it would be a neat toy.

On paper, the Gophers now have bulls in Femi-Cole & Johannesson to run behind beef cake OLs & TEs. With Jeff Jones (hope he is cleared) & Edwards, the Gopher running attack is looking very potent.

Did his 4 year old brother shoot this video?
