Big Ten Media Day Thread - Tweets, Tid-Bits and More...

Was KFAN or ESPN1500 there today? Pretty sad we have to go to a Wisconsin radio station to get interviews of Gopher players. I'm not seeing anything on demand on either station.

KFAN has a 2-hour special on tonight or tomorrow with Gaardsy. He was promoting it on last Friday's Barreiro show.

Can't believe that ESPN and CNNSI don't have a Big Ten story on their CFB pages right now. WTF?

Those boys at ESpin really are taking this whole SEC Network partnership thing serious aren't they? Not surprised at their pettiness towards the B1G.

PiPress: Gophers: 'Next step' means beating Wisconsin, Iowa

Gophers coach Jerry Kill said competing for a Big Ten title means beating Iowa and Wisconsin in the same season.

"I think we understand for us to be successful and win the Big Ten and take our strides farther along in our program, you know, you have to beat the border schools," Kill said Monday during his Big Ten Media Days news conference at the Hilton Chicago.

"We're well aware of that situation, and as you take steps, those are games you've got to win. And both Wisconsin, Iowa are very well-coached and got good players. But we have to step our game up, and I think our kids are excited about that."

The wonderful little nuance in this is that the person who asked the question said they were a reporter from bucky's 5th quarter, or whatever site he was from. He mentioned something about their (soon to be ended) current winning streak vs. The "U", and Kill turned it around that you're not that special, it's a border battle, same as Iowa, we know what's up. Complimented both staffs and squad and said it's time to step our game up.

Best answer of the morning, as far as I'm concerned.

PennLive: If talking was a Division-I sport, who would win Big Ten football media day title?

So, with that in mind, here are my first-division talkers of the 2014 B1G podium battle:

4. Jerry Kill, Minnesota

I can't understand how he landed in FBS football. The longtime small-college coach doesn't seem to have an ounce of pretense in him. So how can he possibly fit in this gig?

Until someone proves otherwise, I'm gonna believe he's a wheat farmer who got lost looking for the herbicide convention and Dave Revsine accidentally welcomed him to the podium and, well, he was there so he thought he might as well just say a few words. Extra points for this quote about the sometimes maddening job of performing maintenance on 18-23-year-olds:

"I always get a kick out of people that are teaching and so forth, they go: 'Boy, these darned kids. What are we going to do with them?'

"Guess what? That's why we've all got jobs. So we need to make sure we take care of them."

The Southern: Purdue, Minnesota's Kill appear at Big Ten media day

Kill, who comes off an 8-5 campaign last year and returns 16 starters, is in his fourth year with the Golden Gophers. Minnesota was picked to finish just ahead of Purdue and Illinois in the West in the media poll.

"Our kids, they're like anybody else. It's a new season and that's our mission statement, and the same way last year, but we have to build on what we did a year ago and continue to make progress," Kill said. "And that's part of having a team that is hungry to play, and as I said, starving right now. And I think in the offseason - we don't have a lot of mottos. Some places, you go all over, they have a whole bunch of mottos. But my whole life, and anybody I've ever coached, is work hard. That's the key to success, work hard."

PennLive: Minnesota's Jerry Kill and Indiana's Kevin Wilson have confidence to replicate Tiller's trick at Purdue

But I will say this: Minnesota and Indiana have hired the type of guys Illinois and Purdue should have. Their ADs went outside traditional pipelines and tried to find creative thinkers with unique backgrounds rather than just dragging up some guy from the MAC. And that's why I think the long-suffering Gophers and Hoosiers have a chance to stick in the middle of the standings and make bowl games the next few years while I see very little such hope for the next-door neighbors in Champaign and West Lafayette.

You can say that media days are pretty much worthless exercises in blather and empty promotion and you'd be partly right. They are constructed by the leagues and TV networks precisely to get fans talking about football five weeks before the season is even to start and we are willing participants in the scam.

But you can also get a good look at the demeanor and sales ability of the coaches as in no other venue. And what I've seen and continue to see in Minnesota's Jerry Kill and Indiana's Kevin Wilson is confidence. They have completely different personalities; Kill is Mr. Soft Sell while Wilson is Mr. Hard Sell. But you can see absolute conviction in both.

Looks like Coach Kill will be at ESPN headquarters today (Wednesday) doing interviews for their various TV and radio platforms.

From Joe C's Minneapolis Tribune story this morning: "He plans to be in Bristol, Conn., on Wednesday for a series of appearances on ESPN’s various television and radio platforms. Thursday will be spent in meetings with the coaches, finalizing details heading into camp. Come Friday, it will be back to football — for the first preseason practice — and back to the sideline."

Today I learned that Northern Illinois wasn't in the MAC when Minnesota hired Jerry Kill.

I think it's poorly worded and he meant that we didn't go chasing the hot coaching name of the year from the MAC like some schools do.

I learned from watching the Rutgers coach interview that it's actually Twenty-Four Seven Sports not Two-Hundred-Forty-Seven Sports like I've been saying in my head for a year now. Good to learn these things...
