All Things Gopher Baseball

Drew Hmielewski of Marshall, MN committed to play WR for the Gophers and it looks like he will play baseball as well.

With the increase in season football tickets, this upcoming season will be our last as season ticket holders and instead we're going to add 6 baseball season tickets next season. At times, the weather is equally as cold.

Drew Hmielewski of Marshall, MN committed to play WR for the Gophers and it looks like he will play baseball as well.

Not sure what position he's being recruited to play, but he's been a pretty good pitcher for the Tigers. As a sophomore, he threw a perfect game and finished the season with a 1.71 ERA and 43 strikeouts. Also had a .465 average. This spring, he batted .467, and finished on the mound with a 2.02 ERA and 59 strikeouts. Marshall finished 3rd in Class AA, but will be in Class AAA in 2016.

It's as if Coach Anderson has just given up and is coasting to retirement.

So what happens with recruits once the contracts of the coaches are up after this summer? When we hire a new coaching staff will their be an influx of new recruits that they want to bring in? Or will these recruits that we have now still be bonded through the ncaa contract? Still not impressed with the recruits they are bringing in and think they should get some junior college kids in late.

If that was the situation there would maybe be some transfers but if Coach Anderson plans to be done after this season I would guess that he is letting the guys he is recruiting now know that and they are aware of the situation they are getting into. He did mention in an article this spring he plans on coaching 4-5 more years if the university will have him and it is hard for me to see him being pushed out even with the struggles of the past few years. http://http://www.twincities.com/sports/ci_28148309/big-ten-baseball-tournament-hits-target-field-sans

Have they started construction on phase 2, I think it's batting cages and new locker rooms.

I hope the Gophers are winning the steak and beans series!

I know he had visited Minnesota last weekend but pretty tough to turn down North Carolina

Has anyone gone the to Steak and beans series? Any players stand out?

From Sid's article on the impact of new facilities today http://http://www.startribune.com/facilities-will-provide-push-u-athletics-need/331495231/
• The Gophers baseball team will open the 2016 season playing Utah, Oregon State, Utah Valley in Surprise, Ariz., in mid-February. Then they will go to Buies Creek, N.C., where they play Campbell three times. Then they will go to Atlanta to play Georgia State for three games. After that they go back across the country, playing at Seattle, at Utah Valley in Orem and at Missouri State in Springfield. Their first home game won’t be until March 30.

I completely understand people's frustration with coach, but He has done a lot of good in the last couple years. He was the driving force behind the new stadium and getting it lighted. He also was the main driving force in this stage two and getting batting cages added to the new stadium. He was also instrumental in making sure the Vikings stadium could hold amateur baseball there. He's getting a lot of work done on the facilities so it's much better for the next coach.

Yes his team has struggled mightily these last five years and lost a lot of good instate recruits. I do think this coming baseball season the team has a chance to be surprising good. I think this year has the potential to be one of his better teams. If we struggle in 2016 then I might get negative but I think this coming season our coach has a chance to field a very good baseball team.

per Sid:

• The Gophers baseball team opens its 2016 season Feb. 19 against Utah in Surprise, Ariz., the spring training home of the world champion Kansas City Royals. … Gophers sophomore lefthander Lucas Gilbreath was offered a spot with Hyannis of the prestigious Cape Cod League for 2016. Junior pitcher/outfielder Matt Fiedler of Eagan also has an opportunity with Wareham of the Cape Cod League. The Gophers expect to place upward of 20 other players in the Northwoods League in 2016. … Twenty-one of the Gophers baseball team’s 32 players are from Minnesota.

Cool story on Perkins continuing to give to the baseball program in different ways. I'm sure they checked to make sure it wasn't a violation probably the reason why it just said to Gopher baseball.

Story on the locker room upgrades.
