per the NY Times:

Wilcox’s steady play kept the Gophers winning while Coach Don Lucia wove eight freshman, only one a redshirt, into a lineup depleted by five players leaving early to sign pro contracts. Top-seeded Minnesota (27-6-6), which meets its longtime rival North Dakota (25-13-3) in the national semifinals in Philadelphia on Thursday, has ranked first or second in both major national polls since late October.

“We all know the importance of that position, and Adam really established himself after his freshman year,” Lucia said. “In that moment in the game when it’s tied or you’re ahead by a goal in the third period, Adam has the ability to make a big-time save.”

Justin Johnson, Minnesota’s volunteer goalie coach and a backup on Lucia’s 2002 and 2003 national championship teams, said Wilcox was as good as any goalie Minnesota had had since Robb Stauber, the 1988 Hobey Baker Award winner. Cal Dietz, the strength and conditioning coach, rated Wilcox with current N.H.L. players Paul Martin and Blake Wheeler as the fastest learners and most proficient all-around athletes to come through the Gophers’ program.

“Goalies aren’t usually like that,” Dietz said. “Justin honed him on the technical aspects and getting in the right position. But when you have something to work with like that, it’s a special thing.”
