Official 2014 Spring Football Thread: Articles, Tweets, Analysis & More...

So...what you're showing me, and it hasn't been brought up in weeks, is that they are closing off University Avenue for hours for a run, but we can't get the damn band to march on Game Day?!

It year's past, they only close a lane from the stadium to 15th and then have cops stopping traffic when people cross before rounding the stadium.

According to this we would be three over the maximum 85 scholarships this fall. Since Cameron Wilson
is graduating early and Dexter Foreman hopefully will be on medical scholarship we will be at 86 scholarships this fall. That means that one recruit will need to grey-shirt or one more of the present scholarship players for this fall need to come off the roster. Two down and one to go.

I would guess Jon Christensen might get a medical scholarship after breaking his leg last year…then we would be at 85

A medical scholarship would mean he's done playing football! While he isn't cleared for contact, he's been pushing the blocking sled, so football is still very much in his future.

Jonah Pirsig, #79 was playing. That is good to see. I thought he was having surgery on his wrist? Will he still be practicing with when they put full pads on?

Go Gophers!!

Before Jerry Kill had Jordan Lynch and Mitch Leidner, he had Mark Smith.

The lineage of Kill’s strong running quarterbacks really stretches back to his first head coaching job, at Webb City (Mo.) High School.

Smith was in eighth grade and didn’t even play football when Kill arrived as Webb City’s new coach in 1988.

“I thought I was heading to the NBA,” Smith said Saturday, after watching a Gophers spring practice. “Coach Kill talked to me, and he told me I was going to play quarterback, and I was like, OK.”

Attended the spring practice today and here are a few observations:

QBs: Leidner with the 1s, Streveler ran with the 2s, Rhoda with the 3s. Didn't see McKinzy participate in the scrimmage portions or passing shells. In the individual QB drills, he looked solid and appears to have a big arm.
RBs: Edwards is going to help this year. Definitely brings speed, quickness, and elusiveness that we haven't had.
TEs: Wozniak is a legit 6"10", the tallest football player I've ever seen. Despite his height, he's filled out pretty well and can move around. Duke Anyanwu has really bulked up and looks significantly stronger.
WRs: We still need help here. Thank goodness we have reinforcements coming in June.
OL: Bak was injured, and Foster Bush practiced with the 1s. Alex Mayes was filling in at 3rd team LT (I didn't know what position he was targeted for). Christenson still isn't cleared for contact, everything else looked as expected.
DL: Was impressed by the size and ability of Demaris Peppers. Played with the 2s, will be in the rotation this year and should be a really nice player when he's an upperclassman. A guy that I hadn't heard of until a few weeks ago, Robert Ndono-Lay (sp?) was also in with the 2s quite a bit. Hank Ekpe has really gotten bigger, nice to have a DE with his size.
LBs: I was concerned about this group previously with losing Manuel and Hill, but not after today. Campbell was willing to mix it up inside; Laster and Poock both impressed me. This group won't be as experienced as last year's, but it may be better by the end of the season.
DBs: Nothing really jumped out, we know this group is solid. McGhee will be a player.

Anyone know when the BTN will do the Gophers spring ball special?

Jonah Pirsig is a massive human being.

+1. Hearing takes from those visiting practice is one of the best things on this board. Thanks JG.

It kills me I haven't been able to attend yet this year. I need to correct that.

STrib: Kill guarantees Gophers offense will be better

One week into spring practice, Coach Jerry Kill already has made his prediction about the offense: “We’ll be better, I can guarantee you that.”

Add it up, and the Gophers hope their offense can improve the way the team’s defense did, especially from 2011 to 2012, when the team went from allowing 31.7 points per game to 24.7.

“We worked hard to get back where we were [offensively] at Northern Illinois and Southern Illinois,” Kill said. “Part of it is players. We’ve recruited good players.

“We’re moving [forward]. We built it on defense, and now you’ve got to bring the offense [along]. That’s what we’ve done everywhere we’ve been.”

Go Gophers!!

Ben Perry, i forgot about him. I would have to see him start over Amaefula with him being 6-5 opposite of 6-6 TC while Amaefula is only 6-2. He wasn't even on the 2 deeps last year.

Ben Perry has all of the physical tools.

Random observations:

I was surprised at the number of people in attendance. The sideline was pretty full. Much better attended than the practice I went to last year.

Right before the start of the main practice session coach Kill came over and talked with a couple of gentlemen who were standing next to me. No idea if they were Gopherholer's or not. He chatted for about 5 minutes. Hearing his take on recruits was worth the trip down even if they hadn't practiced.

Ryan Santoso looks like he lost a ton of flab off his midsection. And does he ever have a strong leg. The ball explodes off his foot. It even sounds different than other kickers.

We really do need new facilities. I think it is embarrassing when punters hit the ceiling while warming up and people have to scurry with brooms and a garbage barrel to pick up the celing pieces that fell on the field.

I didn't notice any.

Me either.

There were a few offensive linemen wearing green jerseys. Anyone know who they were? I think one was Bobek because I was looking for him and could not find him.

I believe that green jerseys indicate no contact.

Sorry. I knew the green was no contact I just made an awkward topic transition in my post.

Will you please share what he said about the recruits.
I have heard Santoso looks good as well. Will he be our kicker??
How about Poock??

Rodrick was running hard yesterday. Laying the wood numerous times and on at least 2 occasions he got some praise from Kill. At one point challenging the defense to find someone that liked to hit.

Good to see the fire after a season that didn't meet expectations.

Something seemed off with Kirkwood, maybe it was the lack of reps or being 3rd string but there didn't seem to be a hop in his step. Could be a reflection of Kill getting reps for the young guys and being a senior they are well aware of what he can do.
