Well, the Gopher Softball team started out the season with 5 straight wins, and 4 straight shut outs, outscoring those 5 opponents 22-2. Included in the sweep was a 1-0 win over previously #17 ranked LSU.

Would seem the Softball team could be on the verge of having a stellar year. I don't follow them as closely as I do the hockey, bb and football teams as the spring is the busiest time of the year for me at work, so I would appreciate a more educated analysis of the team's prospects.

I plan on going to see them when they come down to Tempe in March. Should be a fun weekend!

They are ranked #24 in this week's poll. Not sure the last time they were ranked? They play #1 Florida in Las Vegas this weekend.

LAS VEGAS – Senior pitcher Sara Moulton threw her fourth-consecutive complete game shutout to start the season and No. 22/24 Minnesota racked up six runs on seven hits to take down UNLV, 6-0, in its first game at the Easton Desert Classic in Las Vegas, Nev. Moulton’s win was the 89th of her career, a school record.

Moulton, who had a perfect game through 6 1/3 innings, passed Gopher pitching coach Piper Ritter to set the Minnesota mark. She is now 4-0 on the season and has thrown 28-consecutive scoreless innings.

For the first time since 2008 and fourth time in program history, Minnesota has registered five consecutive shutout wins. For the first time since 2003 and third time in school history, the Gophers are 6-0 to start the season.

Moulton Sets Mark in 6-0 Win Over UNLV

Gophers got two W's today against BYU and Boise State. They're 8-0 for the first time since 2003. They play #1 Flordia tomorrow at 11 am ct.

All I know is that Groenwegen kid is a stud and only a freshman! Also congratulations Sara Moulton on 1,000 ks!

STrib: Gophers softball on upswing

So what makes the 2014 Gophers tick?

1. They have an ace, Sara Moulton. The senior has or soon will have nearly every pitching record in program history. She recently went over 1,000 in career strikeouts. Moulton is 8-1 with a 0.92 ERA and seven shutouts this season. In 53.1 innings, she has 76 Ks, more than any other pitcher in the league.

She has 93 career wins, 98 complete games and 42 shutouts -- all program records -- and has five no-hitters, including one this season which ties another Gophers career record.

The Gophers lead Big Ten teams in strikeouts with 119 as a team and are fourth in ERA at 1.96.

2. These Gophers can hit, too, especially the batters at the top of the order. Leadoff hitter Tyler Walker, the shortstop, is hittting .439 with two doubles, three triples and a homer. She has 12 RBI and her 29 total bases put her fifth in the conference. No. 3 hitter Kaitlyn Richardson is hitting .417 with four doubles, two homers and a team-high 14 RBI. Cleanup hitter Sara Groenewegen, also the Gophers' No. 2 pitcher as a freshman, is hitting .325 with four homers and 10 RBI.

The Gophers are fifth in the conference with a .305 average and have the most homers, 14.

3. Minnesota can field. Its fielding percentage is .971, third in the Big Ten.

The Gophers have received NCAA bids only eight times: 1988, '91, '96, '98, '99, '02, '03 and '11. Their record in NCAA tournament play is a modest 8-16.

They have won Big Ten regular-season titles only three times: They were co-champions in 1986 and won outright titles in 1988 and '91. So Minnesota's golden era was about 25 years ago.

The Gophers' only Big Ten tournament title came in 1999.

In the USA Today softball rankings this week, the Gophers are No. 19, behind only two Big Ten teams, No. 6 Michigan and No.16 Nebraska.

Go Gophers!!

Gophers go 3-1 in Arizona this weekend including a 3-2 win over #3 Arizona State.

Gophers outscore #15 Nebraska 22-5 or something like that? 7-2 in the first game, 14-3 in the 2nd? And the game they lost? They lost by 1.

So they still outscored them 24-8 for the weekend. Can't hardly feel bad about that.

Also, the team, now at 24-4, has not played one single home team, but gets 16 of their next 21 games at home.

Go Gophers!!

Gophers sweep the Illini this weekend (8-3, 7-0, 8-0) and improve to 5-1 in the Big Ten. They are 27-4 overall this season. They could very well be competing for a seed and to be able to host a regional in the NCAA Tournament this year!

Some numbers from the weekend...

* The ladies outscored Illinois 23-3 this weekend.
*Sara Groenewegen (FR), Hannah Granger, and Taylor Lemay EACH had 2 homeruns this weekend.
*The freshman Groenewegen, who is the only pitcher and hitter on the roster, also threw a complete game shutout in her start on Saturday. She moves to 7-0 on the season as a pitcher!
*Sara Moulton also threw a complete game shutout in one of her games, giving up only 1 hit!

Gophers are up to #14 in both polls thanks to Georgia falling. Currently #15 in RPI also... not sure if that is important to determine hosts in softball or not but they would be hosting right now if it is!

Its odd to me that we take 2 of 3 from Nebraska down there, have about 7 less losses than them and are ranked 7 or so spots below them. Seems like B.S. to me.

Gophers take 2 of 3 from #23 Northwestern.

Minnesota heads to #4 Michigan this weekend. Saturday live on BTN. Tape delay on Sunday.

Minnesota snaps #3 Michigan's 20 game winning streak 1-0.

Gophers and Michigan tied at 1 in the 5th. Meyer was just called out at the plate trying to score on a sacrifice fly to center. She had her hand in their but the ump missed it. Huge missed call.

Gophers score 5 in the bottom of the 6th to beat Purdue, 6-3. Play #2 Nebraska/#7 Ohio State winner in Saturday's semifinals.

Gophers got a bit of a gift with #7 Ohio State upsetting #2 Nebraska in 8 innings. Gophers play Buckeyes in the semifinals. Last year's championship game rematch is still alive - #4 Badgers play #1 Michigan after the Gopher game.

Minnesota beat Michigan to win the 2014 Big Ten Tourney championship.

Couple pretty nice games by the Gophers to earn the championship yesterday hopefully they get a chance to host a regional when that is announced tonight.

Congrats to coach Allister and the ladies on a great performance at the Big Ten Tournament!

Played very well the entire tourney and the pitching staff of the two Sara's has been fantastic all season long. Also nice to know that most of the top contributors from this team will be back again next year! :D

Really looking forward to seeing the girls play in the NCAA Tournament next week...Keep that momentum rolling!!

Minnesota will host a regional.
