Official 2016 Recruiting Updates Thread: Links, Tweets, Videos, Stories, Rumors, etc.

die hard gopher: "Garcia is now ranked #173 overall and the #18 DT on scout. Has been ranked #136 overall and #15 DT for a while now on 247. So glad he is probably going to commit at the BBQ."

Don't know if he will commit at the BBQ or not, but I had a nice chat with his mom today. She works for my company and I told her that Jo Jo needed to commit to the Gophers. She said they just got back from a Florida trip where Florida State is starting to show some interest. However, she did say that "momma ain't ready for Florida yet. Maybe some day, but not yet." I do think he commits here based on talking to her.

Let's hope it's true!

Looks like Sean Engel. 6:5 180. WR Class of 2016 Chaska has had a breakout summer on the camp circuit the younger brother of Derrick Engel has had big performances at Sound Mind Sound Body, Michigan State, and Wisconsin camps. North Star news has reported Sean was the leading receiver at the Team USA national games in LA this month with over 100 yards and score in his Team Blue win. It shows him attending the Junior Elite camp

Very excited to see. I was hoping they would both get offered soon. They both seem like typical Limegrover O-lineman at 6-5, 272 and 6-6, 295 respectively at only 16 years old. Chaska has 3 potential gophers next year with Dovich, Engel and Kegel.

Go Gophers!!

Congrats Sam @ Matt ! Nice to get the big lineman offered early ! Building a great 2016 class !

We have now offered more 2016 kids than 2015 kids. In-state kids that is. Plus the Eastridge WR already has a BCS offer, Trent Pink of Elk River attended the RivaRivals top 250 underclassmen event and Sean Engel could get a gopher offer as well by this time next year or sooner. Very strong class.

Carter Coughlin is now ranked 249th nationally on scout to go along with Green and Garcia in the top 300. Pitt just offered.

From April but a free scout article on him here: http://recruiting.scout.com/story/1392902-2016-intro-carter-coughlin

"It was really great. With Coach Miller leaving the linebackers... I talked to him last summer, but I didn't know the new linebackers coach. From what I saw, he's a really great guy and Coach Kill is a funny awesome dude. I talked to the recruiting coordinator for most of practice, then Coach Kill and the linebackers coach talked to me at the end and they said they're looking forward to going through the process with me."

Also a free scout article from July 19th on Chaska OT Matt Kegel http://recruiting.scout.com/story/1422676-2016-intro-matt-kegel

"I really like Oklahoma State camp. Their new offensive line coach bob Conley is an amazing coach and takes the time to sit with you and work through what you need to finish technique. After camp, we talked for awhile and I got his phone number, watched film and just really liked camp. Kick stepping is unnatural as an offensive lineman and at Chaska, we don't really kick step, but it's a big part of college football so he saw that it was something that wasn't natural to me and he worked with me and worked with me until we got it. He's a great coach."

"That camp was awesome too. Coach Limegrover is an outstanding coach. He's a great guy who works with you and when you do something wrong, he doesn't yell at you, he works with you to get better. Coach Kill approached me at camp to say he likes what I'm doing, so that recognition was appreciated. I like the staff down there too."

Lastly Mayor OT Sam Schlueter is now a 3 star on Scout.

Any idea's on how many 2016 MN kids are being looked at by the U of M? Diehard, I would assume you may have some insight on this? Could be a very special class for the locals.

Tommy Barber, Sean Engel and Trent Pink, the Elk River QB, may all get offers along with the 5 that already have offers.

Also i'm not 100% on this but Carter Couphlin's grandpa might have been Tom Moe, the former athletic director and football player here at the U. I'll have to confirm it.

Garcia ranked #276 on ESPN. Green ranked 155th and as a pocket passer which I actually agree with. Never seemed like a true dual threat to me.

KSTP: Mass Appeal: Chaska's D-1 Offensive Linemen

The Chaska high school football team will get regular visits this season from Gophers coaches Jerry Kill and Matt Limegrover. That's because left tackle Bronson Dovich (Class of 2015) is a Gophers verbal commit and right tackle Matt Kegel (Class of 2016) is a wanted man by the Gophers.

With Seth Green being offered by Oregon now, it will be interesting if the Gophers can keep him in the fold? He's mentioned that the Ducks are the favorite in a recent interview. I would hate to lose him, but certainly can understand the intrigue of playing there, with the Nike relationship and all. The local 2016 class is loaded and it would be great to see them all in gold and maroon.

No talk of John Kelly? Looks like it's between MSU and UM, with the Gophers the slight favorites to retain his services. Dantonio wants him in the secondary. UM recruiting him as RB.

Kelly is a 2015 recruit my man, check the thread title. That being said, I have no idea which side he picks, it seems like a war of attrition with MN in the lead due to the fact that MSU has been putting on the pressure on him and he hasn't yet committed.

Anyways, back to 2016. IMO, zero chance Green signs with us. It's best to move on. We need to develop an identity favorable to a QB before we pick up a blue chip recruit. Passing 15 times a game won't work, we need to develop them in-house in the meantime.

He's being recruited as a DB here, not a RB.

Trent Pink is still a pretty good player, are you saying its time to put the press on him instead?

2016? I don't even buy green bananas, brother.

We also have a 2017 thread. In fact an interview with an 8th grader was recently posted on the basketball forum. Two other basketball players got their own threads whens they were in 6th grade.

How do you know he's a pretty good player, because the board talks about him? Have you seen him or Elk River play since the new head coach arrived? I have reservations about offering a B1G scholarship to a QB who will be able to count on one hand his career TD passess when his high school days are done. I think of the hype Connor Wilkie received while playing in a pass oriented offense at Andover and he still ended up D2 at Southwest MN State. My guess is Pink will end up somewhere like St. Cloud State or UMD when it's all said and done. Moses Alipate comes to mind, looked the part in camps but nothing special on Friday nights.

How do you know he's a pretty good player, because the board talks about him?

yes. I dont live minnesota anymore, sorry that I value some of the opinions here on gopherhole. if he walks on, so be it. Just asking the rubes of the gopherhole for some opninion/analysis. Did your GF fellate Mr. Pink or something? sheesh, calm down.

I just asked you a question, why are so many people on here so thin-skinned when someone has a differing opinion? I think the kid is a little overhyped, likely being advertised by his dad who happens to be his varsity QB coach. He completed less than 50% of his passes last year, I can't believe that number isn't higher when his team runs the ball for 30 consecutive plays and then every once in a while he's asked to dump a pass to a TE down the seam against a secondary lulled into selling out against the run.

maybe lead with: I dont like the hype around this player, he should throw more touchdowns. Not How do you know he's a pretty good player, because the board talks about him? Have you seen him or Elk River play since the new head coach arrived?

do you see how you leading off with an attacking tone only reciprocates an equally snarky retort?

your opinions however are insightful and valued. Let us both leave the trenchant talk and move forward.

He attended the rivals top 250 underclassmen event which is the primary reason why some think highly of him and he already has an offer from North Dakota so he clearly isn’t going to St. Could or UMD.

Pointer, have you seen him play? I personally saw Trent Pink at the U of M QB Camp, that was the first time I've seen him live. It was very obvious to me he fits the part. One of the fastest, if not the fastest QB's at camp. Big kid, 6'3"-6'4" close to 200lbs, footwork has good and had a very, very strong arm. At the end of camp he was announced the camp Top Gun winner. Hype?

In regards to your comment about his Dad being his QB Coach/hype maker, I checked in with our ex-Gopher WR Aaron Osterman, who's a football coach with Elk River. He said that Elk River doesn't pass much, he's never heard his Dad request, make threats that his son needs to pass more. Pink is a total team player, he'll do what's best for the team, not himself. Aaron said that Pink could play in the B10, I would trust his opinion, as he was one of our better WR's in the mid 90's.

Your reasoning for not recruiting a kid because of their stats (based on the offense their high school runs) doesn't make any sense? The player cannot control the offense they run, the plays that his coach calls. Coach Kill and his staff have done an excellent job in recruiting the players that fit their system. If he's worthy, the Gophers will offer. If not, they won't. But the kid must be doing something right, as Die hard said, invite to Rivals Top 250 Underclassmen event, Top Gun Award winner at U of M camp, former Gopher WR speaks highly, has B10 talent.
