The No. 1/2 Minnesota men’s hockey program may be done for the 2013 calendar year, but the accolades keep coming in for the Gophers. Freshman forward Justin Kloos has been named the Big Ten Third Star of the Week after a three-point weekend against Michigan State, the conference office announced on Tuesday morning.

The award is the second of Kloos’ career (Third Star for the week of Oct. 22) and Minnesota’s 10th overall this season – the program’s first campaign in the new Big Ten Conference. The Gophers have now earned weekly league accolades in all eight weeks of competition this season.

Kloos, who leads all Big Ten rookies with 17 points (third overall in the league) and 11 assists (tied for fifth overall in the Big Ten) this season, factored into both of Minnesota’s goals (one goal, one assist) during last Friday’s 2-2 overtime tie to open the Michigan State series and added another assist in Saturday’s 3-2 win to close out the first half of the season.

The rookie forward has tallied in 11 of Minnesota’s 16 games so far in the 2013-14 season with the Gophers boasting an unbeaten record of 9-0-2 when he scores a point. Additionally, Kloos has not been kept off the score sheet in consecutive games this season including a four-game point streak to end the month of October.

The Gophers are off for the remainder of December before returning to action at the Mariucci Classic on Jan. 3-4 at Mariucci Arena. Ferris State and RPI open the tournament at 4 p.m. on Friday followed by the Gophers against Colgate at 7 p.m. Colgate will take on either Ferris State or RPI at 4 p.m. on Saturday followed by Minnesota against Ferris State or RPI at 7 p.m. Saturday’s matchups depend on Friday’s results.
