Big Ten Honors Ambroz as First Star

MINNEAPOLIS – Seth Ambroz’s four-goal weekend for the top-ranked Minnesota men’s hockey program has earned the junior Big Ten First Star of the Week honors, the conference announced on Tuesday afternoon.

The New Prague, Minn., native led all NCAA Division I skaters with four goals over the weekend including both game-winning goals against nationally ranked Wisconsin. Ambroz tallied twice in Friday’s 4-1 win over the Badgers to give Minnesota the first official win in Big Ten Conference history before replicating the performance in Saturday’s 4-3 win that completed the conference’s first-ever sweep. Saturday’s game winner came off Ambroz’s stick with just 26 seconds left in regulation.

Ambroz, who set a career high for points and goals in a series over the weekend, now has six goals in the last four games against Wisconsin. The junior, who has 12 points (seven goals, five assists) in 14 games this season, needs two goals, two assists and four points to match his career bests from last year (16 points, nine goals, seven assists in 38 games). In 93 career games, Ambroz has 36 points (21 goals, 15 assists).

Minnesota has now earned Big Ten weekly honors in all seven weeks of play for the 2013-14 season with Ambroz representing the seventh Gopher to earn accolades. The Gophers have combined for nine Big Ten honors already this season.

The Gophers (11-2-1 overall, 2-0-0-0 Big Ten) close out the first half of the season this weekend on the road against Michigan State. Minnesota heads to East Lansing for the program’s first-ever road Big Ten series with Friday’s game set for 6 p.m. CT (FOX Sports North PLUS, BTN2Go.com, 1500 ESPN) and Saturday’s finale set for 3 p.m. CT (FOX Sports North, BTN2Go.com, MyTalk 107.1).
