Meghan Lorence is the WCHA Offensive Player of the Week

The Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) has named Minnesota junior forward Meghan Lorence (Mounds View, Minn.) the WCHA Offensive Player of the Week after Lorence led the Gophers with four points (2g-2a) in Minnesota’s series sweep at Yale last weekend.

Lorence’s two goals included a short-handed goal and a power-play goal. She also assisted Sunday’s game-winning goal. Lorence finished with weekend with two goals on seven shots with two assists and a +5 rating.

The Yale series marked Lorence’s return following an injury during which she missed four games. She returned to Minnesota’s line-up in limited action against North Dakota (Nov. 16-17) but did not see regular shifts until the Yale series. Against the Bulldogs, Lorence and line-mates Hannah Brandt (Vadnais Heights, Minn.) and Rachael Bona (Coon Rapids, Minn.) combined for 11 points.

In Saturday’s 5-1 win, Lorence scored Minnesota’s fifth goal of the game on a short-handed breakaway. Lorence beat a Yale defenseman to the puck just outside the Yale blue line and got through with speed. Lorence was on the ice for three of the Gophers’ five goals for a +3 rating. She had one goal on three shots.

Sunday saw Lorence and her line-mates combine for nine points. Lorence had one goal and two assists. She set up two goals in the first period, including the game-winner, before tallying her second of the weekend on the power-play at 3:58 of the second period. She was again on the ice for three of Minnesota’s goals and finished with a +2 rating. Lorence had one goal on four shots.

Despite missing four league games this season, Lorence is tied for 16th in the WCHA with five goals. For the season, Lorence has eight points (5g-3a) in 12 games.
Lorence and the Gophers take a 15-1-0 (11-1-0 WCHA) mark into this weekend’s non-conference Saturday/Sunday series against Princeton (5-4-2, 4-4-1 ECAC Hockey). Saturday is Thankful for Hockey Day where all fans wearing a hockey jersey will receive a $4 general admission ticket. Sunday’s promotion is Dads & Daughters Day.
