Does anyone know if Fox's new sports channel will simply be added to most cable packages (specifically, Comcast), or is it a channel for which we'll have to pay extra as part of another sports package (i.e. Fox College Sports, NBC Sports Network, CBS Sports Network, etc.)?

Thanks in advance.

I don’t have a definitive answer for you, but my understanding is that it is replacing Speed TV, so if you get that now, I think you will receive Fox Sports 1 in its place.

If I remember correctly it will replace what is currently the Speed channel. Not sure if that is on a tier for Comcast that you need to pay extra for.

Thanks, that would be a great trade-off. I know Fox Sports 1 has the "new Big East" basketball, so am hoping it won't require the haggling & bickering that came with the delayed addition of the BTN to Comcast.

Speed is not on a separate tier for me. The idea is to compete with ESPN, so I would think they'd fight to stay on the same tier. It probably won't be free as they're going to charge more for Fox Sports 1 than they would for SPEED, but it's still only $.80 compared to the $5 we pay for ESPN every month.

Thanks Bleed.

Charissa Thompson already leaving ESPN for Fox Sports 1? After leaving the Fox-owned BTN a couple years ago? Must have offered her mucho dinero.

As I understand it, Fox Sports 1 (FS1) is requiring that cable systems carry the channel as part of their expanded basic lineup, and cannot move it to a 'sports' tier that requires an extra fee. (I have a friend who manages a municipal cable t-v system, so that is what he told me.) On my system, FS1 is replacing Speed. Speed was part of a sports tier, but it's being moved to expanded basic. I already had speed as part of the HD package. (on my system, you have to pay extra for the HD package, and I also pay extra for an HD-capable DVR.).

As far as what FS1 will provide, I hope I'm wrong, but the promos give me the sense that they're going to glitz it up - more "hip" and "edgy." Shoot, they're putting Randy Moss on one of their NFL shows. I quit watching Sportscenter because I couldn't stand the anchors acting like stand-up comics, and shouting their latest wacky catch-phrase every 10 minutes.

Agreed - I quit watching Sportscenter with any regularity several years ago due to both the annoying anchors and a terribly inconsistent presentation order, primarily.

As for the addition of FS1, I'm just longing for the day when I start paying for channels (or programs) that I actually want to watch, and stop being forced to pay for an entire tier of worthless channels just to get one that I really desire.

ESPN News is the only one I've watched in years. Even those anchors play it up more than the used to, but it's generally only 30 minute shows, so they tend to stick to the highlights.

Real excited for the added football dimension that SC and ESPN love to leave out. And by "football" I mean fútbol, fotboll, soccer etc. The world's game finally getting recognition in the States.

When is this fox sports thing supposed to start? I will watch for it.

NY Times: ESPN Challenger Will Try to Punch Above Its Weight

But even as it takes aim at ESPN, Fox Sports 1 has a long way to go to match an empire that is nearly 35 years in the making. Fox Sports 1 does not have nearly as many events, nor does it have an empire as large or revenue as immense as ESPN’s. But Fox executives are looking, for now, less at the impossible task of knocking out ESPN than at establishing a competitive niche.

For this, they look for inspiration within its own history of industry-altering start-ups: Fox News Channel in 1996, which has upended cable news, and the Fox broadcast network’s acquisition of N.F.L. rights 20 years ago.

“The question now is the same you would have asked Roger Ailes when he started Fox News: how do you deal with the 800-pound CNN elephant in the room, and with MSNBC?” said David Hill, the founding chairman of Fox Sports and a consultant to Fox Sports 1. “You don’t worry about anybody else apart from yourself or whether you’re going to fail.”

The difference in ESPN and Fox Sports 1’s finances may not play a role when the rights to the Big Ten Conference and the N.B.A. come up for bidding. Those are the next major battlegrounds where Fox Sports 1 may or may not alter industry history.

Confirmation of what I posted above in an e-mail from Comcast yesterday:

"This new network will be included as part of your current XFINITY TV subscription, available in the same channel location currently occupied by SPEED."

STrib: Fox Sports 1 is ready to take on ESPN

An ex-Minnesota executive will be a key player in the new cable operation.

A Minnesota broadcast veteran will be a key player in this matchup. Bill Dallman, former news director for KMSP, Channel 9, will preside over the new network’s signature show, “Fox Sports Live.” The nightly newscast will take on ESPN’s “SportsCenter,” where making the highlights reel has become more important to athletes than gracing a Wheaties box.

“I had my dream job in Minnesota, but this was a bigger dream,” said Dallman as he showed off his lavish new studio in L.A., decked out with five video walls, catwalks and a couch that could accommodate five Shaquille O’Neals.

Dallman, whose father is a former Gophers linebacker, feels like he’s made the big leagues.

“The other night we had this dinner and [former NFL star] Donovan McNabb looked at me and said, ‘That’s a nice tie knot. Show me how to do that.’ How cool is that?”

I assume FS1 will follow Golf Channel's formula and hire a bunch of hot women and dress them to show off their assets.

If they already have Charissa Thompson, they're off to a great start.

By the way, who is the brunette hottie on the Golf Channel? Yowsa!
