Toxic masculinity? WTF??? So proud of how far we've come in 2019....

I'll wait for more thorough reviews before making any kind of decision on whether or not to see it. DeNiro is in it though, and holy wowzers he's gone completely off the rails in the last several years. Not far from time for his family to step up and make a decision on his permanent housing options

I would wait for Scorsese to say it in those terms. Furthermore....I'd wait to actually see the movie. Keep in mind the way the way the characters in 'Goodfellas' and 'Casino' spoke. In ways that would be pretty offensive today.....especially in public. I'm guessing that this angle is probably being overplayed by this producer.

Didn't we used to have a TV thread? Anyways....I stumbled upon a show on Adult Swim called 'Mr. Pickles'....about a satanic Collie that only the Grandfather knows the truth about. Several of the shows on Adult Swim are outrageous.....ly stupid. This show is outrageous in a good way. It's hilarious.
 

On "The Irishman," I'm really on the fence about this digital de-aging that we're seeing in film today.

there is a term that is used - "the uncanny valley" - referring to digital trickery that results in people looking not quite real. In "Captain Marvel," they de-aged Samuel L. Jackson and Clark Gregg to play younger versions of their Marvel characters. Samuel L. didn't look terrible, but Clark Gregg looked like a wax figure from Madame Tussauds.

Likewise in the new Will Smith action movie, "Gemini Man," they de-aged Will Smith so that he could play himself and a younger cloned version of himself. Several reviews say the 'clone' character is close, but just misses looking human.

And the same technique is being used in "The Irishman" so DeNiro can play a younger version of his character.

When digital stuff doesn't work, it takes me out of the movie. Just because you can do something doesn't mean that you should. It's like these new "Hologram" concerts that are popping up. I was reading about a concert tour featuring holograms of Roy Orbison and Buddy Holly. ick.
 



Just saw a spot for this - 1917 - during a commercial break from the World Series.....and holy s*#)@*.....I can't wait to see this! Looks absolutely fantastic.

Has anyone seen "The Lighthouse" with Willem Defoe? It didn't get a lot of pub and wasn't in very many theaters but it looked fantastic and the reviews were pretty good. It's not in the theaters anymore that I'm aware so I guess now it's time to wait a little bit until it's available on other outlets.

1917 is the one Im looking forward to seeing. Starts tomorrow.

As to films Ive seen recently: "Passengers" in 4k on my Apple TV was dang near fantastic, very compelling, great special effects. Its an intelligent sci-fi movie about space travel in the distant future.

Only seen the last three on this list. Whiplash is definitely one of the best movies of the decade. A few more that I'd like to add:

Have not seen Dolemite or Billboards, heard good things. Spiderverse is the best comic book type movie I've ever seen. A must see. Hereditary is really different but much better than It IMO. I liked the rest of your movies.
Manchester is just raw drama. Gut wrenching and well acted.
La La Land is love it or hate it. I absolutely loved it and I'm so so on musicals
And Tarantino is the best of this generation, and Once... is right up there with Pulp Fiction and Inglorious Basterds as his best movie.
 

Really, for Once...? Seemed cheesy LA nostalgia, like LaLaLand.

Whiplash is ... intense. Very relatable if you’ve ever had a coach or instructor like that.

Definitely plan on seeing it. In case you haven't seen The Witch it's by the same director and an interesting bit of horror. Also, love Defoe and it's surprising that Robert Pattinson has gone from ridiculous emo vampire to solid dramatic actor.

Valiant Movie Trailer

I'm not sure if it's out on Netflix (or whatever other source you use) but the documentary "Valiant", chronicling the first season of the Vegas Golden Knights and their Impossible run to the Stanley Cup Final is really really good ("Welcome To Impossible!!!"). It was supposed to be released in mid-late December.

I was able to see a screening for it in November and they do a really good job. The film shows how the team ended up in Las Vegas via expansion, how they were predicted to be easily the worst team in the league, and follows their epic run to the Cup Final.

It also ties in nicely, but not overdone, the impact of the October 1, 2017 shooting at Mandalay Bay on the team and their first season progress; how the success of the Knights helped to rally a city, and to help heal a city that needed it ever so badly at the time.

Great documentary! Check it out if you're remotely a hockey fan, or even if you aren't!

Ive downloaded Lighthouse on my Apple TV and have watched all but the last 30 minutes so far. Its black and white and dark, sort of loosely based on Samuel Taylor Cooleridge's epic poem, "The Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner". I took a break because it had gotten a little too weird, but will finish it up sometime.

LOVED Whiplash! But La La Land? Spiderverse? Isn't that the one where Spider-Man is a pig? Even my 9yo sons thought that looked stupid.

With three kids under 10, I watch mostly family, animated, and high fantasy films. Best of the decade? Coco. Hands down, not even close.

Whiplash and La La Land same director and composer. Spider Verse just so original and the look of it was amazing. 1/1000 of the movie is spider pig. Have not seen Coco and it's not on the list :)
 

Pixar films are usually really good. Toy Story 4 was a joke. I had to turn it off after about 20 mins.

Ratatouille is still one of my favorite films of all time. It is not a children's film.

You should really check out Coco. It's not your typical Disney-Pixar. The plot twist is on par with Usual Suspects.
