All Things Tre Jones Recruitment Thread

You'd think out of all these 5 star recruits coming out of Minnesota at least one of them would want to turn their hometown program into a nationally elite team and become a legend in their home state. Guess I'm wrong. Huh.

Tre was the only one who had the chance to make them elite. The previous ones might have gotten us over .500 but not much else.

You mean Tyus Jr?

For what it's worth, Amir Coffey was a 5 star at one point.

You mean like Joel Pryzbilla and Rick Rickert? And the next one? (And there will be a next one.)

Royce White was a 5-star who chose the Gophers. Unfortunately, he didn't subsequently choose to remove his head from his rectum.

I put Tre, Rashad, Tyus, Trent, Hurt and Suggs in that rare top-tier NBA level talent.

Local guys like Amir, Oturu and Reid are in that second tier, but great program builders & impact players and that most likely will give you 4 years. Getting 2 of these 3 ain't shabby.

I completely agree. If we have a shot at a great player who is likely to stay 3-4 years, that has to be the preference. Not the same for the blue bloods, but for the U of M it will give them a better shot at sustained success.

Judging from Rashad Vaughn's one season an UNLV and subsequent NBA flame out, I'd definitely bump him off that list.

Nope. He's definatly on that list.

per Shooter:

Tre Jones could be reunited at Duke with his former Apple Valley teammate, Gary Trent Jr., next year if Trent doesn’t leave for the NBA after his upcoming freshman season with the Blue Devils’ men’s basketball team.

Trent, 6-6, 215 pounds, has been practicing with Duke players, preparing for Sunday’s game against the Dominican Republic in Santiago.

Go Gophers!!

Last year's almost historic turnaround was impressive, but Pitino still couldn't get the team past the 1st round. Prior to last year, they had one of their worst seasons ever, and prior to that Pitino was still in that awkward transition stage that a young coach like himself often goes through while half his squad are players from the previous regime.

The previous regime? Well, some people thought Tubby was a nice guy, but few out there thought that he was a coaching genius that could lead us to a Big Ten Title or a deep run in the NCAA tourney.

Before Tubby? Monson was the guy brought in to clean up the program and keep it afloat and win enough games to keep SOME interest in Gopher bb alive until the consequences of the Haskins scandal blew over.

So seriously, what reason would any of those really highly rated players of had to stay home?

Pryzbilla and Rickert and even Humphries were all well aware that if they played for the Gophers, that they would shine more brightly than any other player on the team, almost guaranteed.

Same can't be said anymore. Coffey was rated a 5 Star at one time, came into the program and did not perform heads and shoulders above the rest of the squad.

Joining this team NOW means you have to share minutes and glory and attention with the likes of a 1st Team All-B1G Conf player, the B1G Def POY, an All-B1G Freshman 1st team player, etc..

The younger backups on this team could rise to similar accolades as Mason & Lynch in 2018-19, and so the new recruits may have to be satisfied with matching Coffey's simply making the 1st team All-Conf Freshman team accolade?

If a great player isn't gauranteed to become the best player on a good team, why not be just one of many great players on a great team with a legit chance to make the Final Four and possibly win a Natl Title?

So...

IF, the Gophers contend or win a B1G Conf title this year, and make a pretty deep run into the NCAA tourney, like maybe Sweet 16, but more like an Elite 8 run at least,

THEN local superstars might come to believe that playing for Pitino and the Gophers could result in their getting similar national attention that playing for a Duke or Kentucky or Kansas would otherwise get them.

UConn came out of nowhere and has since established themselves as a nationally elite program, at least until they lost their HOF caliber coach. And it was an out of state player that led them to that status at the beginning and a HOF caliber coach that had to work hard to build up his program.

Bobby Jackson was an out of state player that led our Gophers to the Final Four. It was out of state players that led our Gophers to the Elite 8 in 1990, right?

So if UConn could do it, we can do it. And it won't be on the backs of local superstars, it will be on the backs of out of state recruits that for one reason or another are passed over by the Duke's and Kentucky's of the world. Will local players contribute? Yes, of course, but just not the superstars, at least not at the beginning.

Once Pitino has established himself as a legitimate coach who can win in the NCAA tourney, and can get the Gophers past the 1st weekend consistently,

THEN, and only then, will SOME, and never ALL, but some of our local superstars start considering the Gophers as a program worthy of legitimate consideration for themselves.

Only AFTER they see that Pitino is getting his players into the NBA.

Would I liked to have gotten Tre? Sure. But was it realistic? NO!!!

Top 20 players? NO! Top 100 guys like IW, Coffey & Oturo? YES!!! Guys like McBrayer and Murphy? Absolutely.

And those are the kinds of players this team will have to utilize to establish themselves as a consistent legitimate contender.

Love loyal players like Bakary and Gaston, but down the line guys like that should not be on the roster. Replace those 2 with guys like Curry, McBrayer or Murphy or maybe someone like Mason on this year's roster and imagine how good and deep we'd be.

So yeah, snagging a Tre this year would have helped the team rise up another notch for sure, but simply replacing guys like Bakary and Gaston with guys like Washington, McBrayer, Curry, etc. is going to do wonders for the team's depth and overall talent.

How many games last year did the team suffer from too many players having off nights and not enough quality bench players to turn to or how bad was it losing Akeem when we did, without such a shallow bench to turn to???

Load the team up with 13 guys the same quality as our Top 9 guys, and we won't just contend for a Conf Title this year, we'll contend for the title every year and will have a good chance to make deeper runs in the NCAA tourney every year as well. Pitino would never need one of these Top 20 superstars to become the next Wisconsin like program, not meaning slow prodding offenses, but consistent top 4 finishes in conf play and lots of deep runs in the NCAA tourney.

And unlike Wisconsin, Minnesota has a certain kind of mojo that had Minnesota leading the NCAA in cbb attendance back in the 70s, and had them ranked among the TOP TEN(or 20) schools in producing NBA talent as late as into the new Millenium.

Pitino probably can't cheat like Calhoun.

Good post, truely Pitino has not only strengthened the starting five but the bench as well. Ball games are won with both elements. Sure Tre would have been a nice get, but this future team will be very dangerous without Tre. Especially if they continue to play as a team just as they did the second half of last year.

Tre Jones died a week ago Sunday. RIP Tre. Let's move on.

Yeah he's no longer being recruited. This thread should be locked and cremated.

Well, technically he changed his name to Tyus Jr. #PlayingInMyBrothersShadow

My thoughts exactly......

Now lets hope he gets jellied in the tourney...

per ESPN:

Duke point guard Tre Jones -- the ACC Player of the Year -- will enter the 2020 NBA draft, he told ESPN on Saturday.

Jones, who was also voted the ACC Defensive Player of the Year, is a projected first-round pick, according to ESPN draft analyst Jonathan Givony.

Go Gophers!!

Tre joins the list of recent Duke players who never played in a Final 4. Dukies haven’t played in one since 2015.

Had he chosen the Gophers he almost certainly would have been in one last year. (And if Matz hadn’t gotten dinged up)

Jones seems chronically overrated to me.
Is Hurt declaring next?
