OK, I know that this might get moved to another board, but I think its pretty cool. If the U of M can have one of the top 10 endowments in the country among public universities, can;t we also have one of the best football teams? There is probably not a cause and effect relationship between endowment and sports prowess, but is does suggest that when the powers that be at university want to achieve great things (e.g., building an enormous endowment) they can. Let's get our athletic programs in line with the quality of the rest of the university. Go Gophers! http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/...rsity-endowments_n_1659045.html#slide=1201772

Theirs lot's of problems with endowments I believe. Many if not most come with stipulations on how the money can be spent, so unless these people are donating for specific reasons like facilities and athletics, can't really go dipping into it. I also think I read once that money is sometimes made to be split up so it's used over a period of time so it last longer. I remember reading stuff about endowments when Akron was firs looking to build their new football stadium. It appears to be a situation maybe as to what you see you might not get, if that makes sense.
