STrib: Maresh, family wait for results of biopsy on tumor in left calf

Maresh's Tumor

His tumor is surrounded by arteries and veins (blood vessels for you medical types).

He'll probably need a specific type of surgeon, a vascular surgeon (specialist surgeon who works around blood vessels and nerves) to remove the tumor.

If his tumor is also wrapped around major nerves, his vascular surgeon may partner the surgery with a neurosurgeon.

The size of his tumor is fairly large. If this is removed, he's going to have an empty space inside his calf without any tissue.

When the surgical wound is closed and sewn shut they'll also have to close off this empty space.

Therefore, I wound think that he'll have a little "depression" when one looks at the outside of that part of his leg once he has his surgery.

If his tumor is removed without traumatizing his vascular and nervous system he should be able to play football eventually.

If not........

I know 3 general surgery residents at Mayo - I hope none of them have a hand in the surgery - ha.

We obviously have to hope for a benign result on the biopsy. I'm sure he is seeing a surgical oncologist, the kind who would specialize in these types of tumors. If it is benign, a simple excision of the tumor should be sufficient and he could be playing football this fall. If it is malignant, the type of malignancy will dictate the treatment. In that case, football takes a back seat to the best treatment for a cure.
We need to do some prayers for him and his family this weekend.
