What the $#%! is a HELMET school?

Blah, blah, blah, blah.

Good job. When you're getting completely and utterly owned in an argument, stray from the topic and ramble on with no point. Excellent.

Keep on digging.

more important tasks like informing any Wiscy fans on the board that their programs have nothing on ours

Please quote where I said this.

Google "helmet school."

Let me know how far you have to search before you find it used by somebody not associated with the Gopherhole.

Five posts, from 4 different sources, found with very little difficulty. Two were made by Pac-10 fans, one by a Bison fan, and two by a GopherHole poster on far-flung message boards. I accept your wronghood.

P.S. You originally said "anywhere but here", and now you've already changed your point to "not associated with the Gopherhole". Some above were posted by GopherHole users, but they were understood quite easily by other posters. It helps to make your argument stronger if you don't keep changing it to suit your own failed point.

It's not a widely used term to say the least.

I never said that it was. There's a fairly large gap, I'm sure you'll agree, between "used and understood only on GopherHole" and "widely used".

I love threads when DP goes off on people's ability to comprehend or write English LOL

There's no doubt I've heard the term numerous times on ESPN, and you know if it was said on ESPN, a lot of people heard it, and a lot of people will proceed to spew it.

Then I guess we can agree that it falls somewhere between only used on Gopherhole and rarely used elsewhere.

Everything must be an argument. I will continue to use the word "powerhouse" when the situation arises.

Good synonym. Honestly just as meaningless, but everyone would claim to understand what it means.

I would demonstrate which schools qualify by asking if the head coach of "X" school was fired tomorrow for poor performance would it make national mainstream news (think ABC Nightly News). Outside of a handful of very tenured coaches at small programs, the previous lists seem pretty good by that definition. I would think Becky or Herk-off would only make it on a slow news day, where Notre Dumb would make it regardless.

M-V-P! M-V-P! M-V-P!

(dude's indignant self-righteousness makes me chuckle! I'm not hatin'; keep it up, DP!)

Go Gophers!

Nothing like a good old pre-Spring practice pi$$ing match. Let's channel this energy toward the Budgies or the Hogpiles...

I've played and followed football for nearly all my 31 years of life and I am wondering when the hell "helmet school" became the sexy phrase to describe elite programs? It seems the past six months I can't read a single recruiting thread without someone mentioning helmet schools.

Yes, I understand the concept; it's a program so accomplished it is recognizable by its helmet. My question is what CONSTITUTES a helmet school? Seems to be a wide range of definitions, usually set to best serve someone's opinion.

Who the $#%! would complain about the use of "helmet school?"

I'm 27 and have heard and used the term "helmet school" many many times.

"Helmet school" is an amorphous and subjective term that ESPN types use to describe a consistent winner and champion at the college football level and schools that are mainly identified by their football team.

Yeah.. I've heard that term being used on some sports shows. Forgive my lack of memory to remember which ones.. But I know I've heard it used.

I first heard the term 'helmet school' NOT on this board.

With the two facts I just stated above, I have come to the conclusion that the phrase is not exclusive to GopherHole and that when used outside of GH one would NOT be on the receiving end of blank stares.

Tis true as i've used and heard the term frequently over the years, including actual face to face conversations with fans of other schools (Big 10 and SEC)

Isn't the term suppose to suggest that a casual follower of the sport would recognize these teams just by their helmets because of how much spotlight these teams get by being powerhouses? I guess it makes sense that way Sure every casual fan would recognize different teams, but the typical powerhouses would be much more consistently recognized throughout the country than other teams. But then what about helmets like UCLA? Since you know...they say the name of the school on them.

It is a stupid and trendy phrase. Much like how "chalk" blew up two or three years ago to describe NCAA bball favorites.

Helmet schools are called that because of the special helmet that keeps any player wearing it from targeting, apparently.

:drink:
Agreed!
Not only can they keep them from targeting, but the announcers will praise them for their toughness and the on air official will support them in their efforts.

UCLA is a helmet school, but only because it spells out the school's name on the helmet, making it easily recognized.

It's a dumb term but I define it as schools people can identify by helmet that don't have a logo on it.
