Official 2012 Gopher Fall Camp Thread: Updates, Analysis, Links, etc.

Didn't Nelson's primary receiver at Mankato join the team as a walk-on? I didn't see anyone else from Mankato on the roster.

AP: Bowl game or bust? Gophs believe they'll get there

After consecutive 3-9 seasons, the first marked by the firing of Tim Brewster and the second by Jerry Kill's seizures, the Minnesota Gophers have their sights set on a bowl game.

"Minnesota is different this year. It's a new mindset. Different players. New jerseys. Everything about Minnesota is getting better and evolving," sophomore 0wide receiver Marcus Jones said. "It's just time for the program and the team to start winning games. That's what I believe is going to happen. That's what we believe as a team is going to happen."

Sam from MPLS writes: Just read your specialists list. Maybe he's not the best, of the group, but he could be: Troy Stoudemire. The guy has the most kickoff return yardage in B1G history. If he's not at the top, that's understandable, but he's on the list. Not including him is a huge miss. As a side note, Marcus Jones for MN housed one last year, and would have been two if not for a penalty call - a penalty that did not impact Jones' return. Did I mention he was a true freshman? These two are dangerous, and may be the best two-man combo of KR specialists in the B1G.

Brian Bennett: You're right that Stoudermire is an accomplished return man, but I'm taking a little bit of a wait-and-see approach with him. It's really been two years since he was a standout kickoff return guy; he averaged 21.6 yards on his eight returns before the injury last year, which would not have ranked him among the best in the Big Ten. But if he can recapture his 2010 form, he could be a Top 10 specialist.

Go Gophers!!

Hi - that's my submission. Long, long time GH lurker here. Gopher alum, season ticket holder, and huge Gopher football fan. I'm always on this site, along with GI, FBT, Scout, 247, and the WWL pulling as much gopher FB info as I can. Saw my post come up here and thought it was probably time I register. Looking forward to kicking off against UNLV. Ski-U-Mah!

Welcome Sam! Glad you signed up for an account, and good question to Bennett. No doubt that he missed Troy on that last and no doubt Rittenberg would have had him on the list had he been the one to put it together.

Looking forward to your posts.

Go Gophers!!

I'm being picky here on the Thursday scrimmage film clips but some of the running backs are tucking the ball "high and tight" and some are not. MG does a good job, but only when he sees a defender approaching. Let's cut down on the fumbles guys.

Suddenly Gopherhole seems a bit more squatchy...

Welcome aboard! Ski-U-Mah!

Yep, his name is Hunter Friesen and I believe he is going to enroll at the U in January. I believe he just had surgery and didn't want to waste one of his 5 years being injured, so he'll essentially be a walk-on version of a gray shirt.

He was a good WR but I wouldn't be shocked to see him play CB at the U.

Missing Harbison and Jones...right? Injury hold outs I think.

Harbison and Jones (and Maye) are technically beign used as slot backs and will "rarely" be at full fledged WR. These guys are your true "wideouts". We'll see how the season pans out.

NCAA kick return record on Stoudermire's mind

The Gophers are still a week away from firming up their depth chart, but Troy Stoudermire is willing to spoil the suspense.

"I will be the No. 1 kick returner. Definitely. I think everyone knows that," the senior cornerback said. "I feel really good this year. I'm ready to go out there and break this record."

Unfortunately I think his contribution in the return game will be greatly reduced this year with the rule changes. Hope I'm wrong though and he's able to break some long ones.

per Sid:

Kill high on quarterback Gray

Gophers football coach Jerry Kill notes that quarterback MarQueis Gray came back from a ligament tear last year, and now that his knee is even stronger, he should have a great season.

"The way he was out there running full speed and making cuts on a dime last year, he looked great," Kill said. "I feel like he is going to have a great year. Also he's going to help [receiver] Jamel Harbison out and both of those guys should be able to help us out this year."

Speaking about the improvement in talent on the team this year, Kill said: "We're taking a program from the ground up, and it takes some time, but we've certainly improved athletically and I'm pleased the way our kids to this point are giving effort and trying to get better."

Huh? I think he probably said Marcus Jones, and whomever was transcribing typed in MarQueis Gray.

We're four spots ahead of Middle Tenn. That proves right there we can play in the heat.

I always miss Dance4Raiders this time of year.

Sandell: Running back rotation still an area of contention for Gophers

http://www.1500espn.com/sportswire/...still_an_area_of_contention_for_Gophers081912

Go Gophers!!

6 man rotation? I for one am surpirsed Gilum has not solidified the spot. And for Williams still being considered rather than redshirting him speaks volumns as to what they are looking for to be The Threat at Running Back. They have Cobb, Kirkwood, and Williams who run big. Wright who is fast, but cannot break a tackle, Maye who is fast and is hard to tackle, and Gilum who seems to do everything well, but has not ended this. This along with the offensive line choices 10 days from a game is either something they have decided and are repping with no inclination to tip their hand to the media or the opponent, or if they truely have not made the decision and are still unsure as to who will start. I think the former is true.
