2019-20 Schedule

Can the Gophers win 25 games?

I have them winning 12 or 13 conference games. Hard to know without knowing the non-conference schedule (which I guess we'll get tomorrow and presumably includes the same number of games as last year?) but 25 seems like a lot.

Found what I would guess is last game to be added to the Non-conference.

November 5th vs Missouri St at the barn.

When that non-conference schedule does appear, I don't think it is going to have a Vancouver tournament on it. Just a guess on my part, as there as been no buzz at all about a a Gopher tourney visit this non-conference season.

That's more to do with the fact that the Tournament field hasn't been officially announced. Two of the teams are unknown. I think gophers will be in it.

Missouri State first year coach is former MSU assistant, Amaka Agugua-Hamilton, with Tori Jankoska as one her assistants.

Here's the NCAA RPI update adding Missouri State. We await the Vancouver Showcase unveiling.

279 Vermont

150 Montana State

That would be interesting if these were in chronological order.

VICTORIA, B.C. – The University of Victoria will play host to the “Victoria Invitational,” an eight-team NCAA Division Women’s basketball tournament, Nov. 28-30, organizers announced today. The event, which had a very successful launch last year at the Vancouver Convention Centre, will feature prominent NCAA Final Four teams, including Mississippi State (2017 & 2018 NCAA Runner-Up), Stanford (2017 Final Four) and Syracuse (2016 NCAA Runner-Up). The three-day tourney will be played at the CARSA Performance Gym on the University of Victoria campus.

“We are thrilled to have the option to move our premium women’s event to such an outstanding facility at UVic,” said Brooks Downing, CEO of bdG Sports, the Kentucky-based event organizer. “It’s a state-of-the-art, new facility that has played host to the Toronto Raptors training camp and will serve our teams and fans in a first-class fashion.”

In Victoria, the tournament is a collaboration between bdG Sports, the event owner and operator, along with local co-founders Howard Kelsey and David Munro, the University of Victoria, and the Greater Victoria Sport Tourism Commission, which is providing funding to support the event.

“The Greater Victoria Sport Tourism Commission is proud to support the Victoria Invitational this fall,” said Robert Bettauer, Chair of the Greater Victoria Sport Tourism Commission and CEO of PISE. “The sport of basketball has a long history in Greater Victoria. The Victoria Invitational is a natural fit with our goals of attracting high-profile sporting events that align with strong community support and the development of sport in our region.”

Last year, the event became the first NCAA Division I regular-season tournament ever played in Canada after organizers worked with Sport Hosting Vancouver to create a temporary gymnasium at the Vancouver Convention Centre. Teams played in front of a capacity crowd on three of the six days.

“We are thrilled to bring this event to Victoria this November and especially to UVic’s gorgeous CARSA Gymnasium,” Kelsey said. “Our inaugural event last year was a huge success and to have likely three Top 10 teams participating this year will be a tremendous display of basketball talent.”

In addition to Mississippi State, Stanford and Syracuse, the eight-team tournament field will include Bowling Green, Cal Baptist, Green Bay, Houston and San Francisco. The event will feature four games per day for each of the three days.

“Our teams and their fans will absolutely fall in love with Victoria and all it has to offer,” added Munro. “From the Butchart Gardens to the original Chinatown, from Victoria’s British roots to its stunning whale watching tours, this tournament will provide a unique experience for these teams, their friends, family and fans alike.”

Tournament pairings and public ticket sales will be announced at a later date. Event info can be found at www.VictoriaInvitational.com and on social media at @VictoriaInvBC.

Add Milwaukee on November 14 at the Barn

Milwaukee faces three straight B1G opponents (at Purdue on the 10th, at Minnesota on the 14th and at Wisconsin on the 17th). Adding the Panthers:

279 Vermont
219 @ George Washington
204 Milwaukee
150 Montana State
75 @ American
71 UC Davis
40 Missouri State
16 Arizona State
2 @ Notre Dame

The 14 November game versus Milwaukee at Williams is the same night as the Maturi Pavilion Badger/Gopher volleyball showdown. Volleyball is scheduled for 8 PM.

Thus far I think there's only one other conflict with volleyball and it's on Saturday 23 November (Iowa (volleyball) and Montana State (basketball).

So, is the thinking that the Gopher staff is now scrambling to get into a decent tournament/hoping someone drops out of a decent tournament? Seems like this could be another problematic OOC schedule if they can't come up with something.

Addendum: That volleyball match was recently moved ONTO that date, presumably because of TV.

No

The radio silence, and still no schedule, days after the state fair appearance, sure makes it seem like it.

With Bryant we have :

293 Bryant
279 Vermont
219 @ George Washington
204 Milwaukee
150 Montana State
75 @ American
71 UC Davis
40 Missouri State
16 Arizona State
2 @ Notre Dame

(Bryant plays at Illinois two days before their trip to Minneapolis-that should soften up the Bulldogs).

Adding Lehigh:

279 Vermont
219 @ George Washington
204 Milwaukee
150 Montana State
130 Lehigh
75 @ American
71 UC Davis
40 Missouri State
16 Arizona State
2 @ Notre Dame

There are 2 dates where there's also a men's game - Tuesday 11/5 (men at 7:00, season opener) and Sunday 12/15 (men at 5:30, B10 home opener). Ugh.

Date conflicts

Well, the weekend game is an easier fix.....the women would probably get a noon time start. They then clear everyone out, do some cleaning, and then set up for the men. They've done that before, with the women always getting the short end of the stick on the earlier game time.

That November 5 game will be a real challenge. You can't do a day game and expect anyone to be able to attend during the week as your first game. With that 7 PM men's start, you can't do a game following the men. It would probably be 11 PM at best before they could tip off. Looking at Missouri State's schedule, they play at home on November 1 and they have pre-season WNIT starting on November 8. Not a lot of flexibility there, but maybe they could move the women's game to Monday, November 4?

Will be very interesting to see how this gets resolved. Not a great way to start off your season if you irritate your season ticket holders with a game time that is hard to get to.

Three years ago there was a Friday double header where Marlene's team played Georgetown at 4:00 PM and Pitino's team played St. Johns at 8:00 PM.

We'll just need to wait and see what they come up with. A Tuesday earlier start is harder for folks than a Friday game, I suspect.

And, just a pitch here from me as an election judge - if your city has an election on November 5 - don't forget to vote that day before you go the the game(s)!! Or, take the easy route and do the no excuse absentee voting.

https://gophersports.com/news/2019/...-game-times-set-for-home-games-this-year.aspx

Game times set: the opener is Tuesday, Nov. 5 at 3:00 PM.

The 49th season for the Golden Gophers gets underway on Tuesday, Nov. 5 when the Golden Gophers host Missouri State at 3 p.m. in conjunction with the men's basketball game that night at 7 p.m. versus Cleveland State.

After hosting Vermont at 2 p.m. on Nov. 10, Minnesota will hold its annual Field Trip Game on Nov. 14 at noon against Milwaukee. The rest of the month includes games with Arizona State (3 p.m. on Nov. 17), Montana State (2 p.m. on Nov. 23) and Bryant (2 p.m. on Nov. 26).

Following three straight road games, the Gophers return to Minneapolis to close out their non-conference schedule with contests versus UC Davis at 1 p.m. on Dec. 15 and Lehigh at noon on Dec. 21.

The month of December then ends with the Big Ten home opener against Ohio State on New Year's Eve at 4 p.m.

As the calendar turns to January, game times were set for 7 p.m. against Northwestern on Jan. 9, Iowa on Jan. 16, Wisconsin on Jan. 22 and also Nebraska on Jan. 30.

In February, the Gophers will face Michigan at 6 p.m. on Feb. 10, while the tip-off time with Indiana on Feb. 22 will be determined later on this season.
