Official 2016 Recruiting Updates Thread: Links, Tweets, Videos, Stories, Rumors, etc.

Yes, I know that Snelson has dropped due to non-spectacular senior stats/games, but he's still our #2 scored commit on 247...he is a high-3 star that will drop our ranking, if one cares about that.

In a completely unrelated thought: over on the basketball board there have been discussions on some threads of Pitino trying to "win now" with the older players in his first year and paying for it down the road. Anyone else a little concerned at Claeys trying to make an immediate impression on his short contract (also senior QB and easy schedule) and we may pay for it in a few years given the amount of JuCo guys we brought in?

Hello - remember Hayo Carpenter? We'll not know how good a recruit will be until he starts practicing with all the other recruits.

Although, I don't think Snelson compares anywhere near Hayo.

There might be, but football is also different with the amount of scholarships, you can afford to take chances, whether that's on late bloomers or JUCO's, basketball, you typically get 2-4 scholly's per year. In an ideal situation in football a recruit wouldn't see the field until their third year in.

And it also seems like the JUCOs that are being brought in this year are to address immediate needs and to even out scholarship years.

Care to explain how he might do this? By playing a senior QB? Or do you mean 2 juco guards who will save our QB's life because we're a tad thin there? Not trying to be tooooo sarcastic, but I just can't even see HOW Claeys could do that, even if he wanted to.

Snelson might be slower than Hayo.

He has to the most over-hyped recruit in the 10 years that I've followed Gopher football recruiting.

It's 1 week before signing day and our d-line commits are a JUCO from Iowa Western and a project DE that had 0 offers. This after a 2015 class that landed us 2 projects: Mose Hall and Winston. Time for Phelps to seriously step it up and make the move to D-1 recruiting.

Along with the Daniels twins.

For the most part, but Elijah looked like a pretty good safety to me.

I'd seriously take any of our current 3 WR commits over Snelson and it isn't really close. Yet people continue to lose sleep over a kid who isn't a need and whose best offers are from Maryland, UCF, and Penn St. All because he lists fake offers from SEC schools on his profile.

If people want to lose sleep, lose it over missing out on Kasl, Watts, Castillo, Tre Bryant, etc, etc.... Snelson is an absolute waste of time.

No, I'm saying it is warranted.

1. Claeys has a short contract.
2. We have a senior QB.
3. The schedule is lined up for him to go 9-3 and get a contract.

I get why he's doing it. I get that football is different than basketball. However, if you rob Peter to pay Paul you could have issues. Maybe it's to address depth/class issues now, but in 2-3 years, there may be depth issues again...and JuCo guys are not always going to save the day. Just a thought. I'm not saying it's a firable offense, just bringing up another angle. However, I'll be flamed because it always has to be sunshine and roses of excitement about the direction any of our programs are going in on this board until it fails. Then we all pile on the former coach.

I get why he's addressing the guard issue now. That said, addressing it now might be neglecting it later. I'm sure someone will come on here to tell me that we have a promising freshman or incoming freshman, but really you want 2-3 promising ones because odds say that only 1 will pan out. And what if that 1 gets hurt?

It's hard to defend the opinion that Kill's retirement hasn't hurt recruiting, even if some of it is a result of new schemes.
That said, the in state recruits this year seem really good and Coughlin is a legitimate blue chip prospect at an impact position.
The JUCO linemen will help bridge the gap between the very talented 2015 and 2016 Oline classes, as well as provide depth at DT which lost us several games this past season.

Other than that it seems like the same Kill/Claeys type class where we are signing lots of versatile athletes and finding the best spots for them when they arrive on campus.
Guys like Kieft, Martin, and Johnson might end up being the next in a long line of guys seemingly off the radar of the national recruiting experts who come here and leave as top tier guys at their positions in the conference.

I don't/didn't expect us to sign Watts, Chase Allen, Castillo, Snelson, etc because of the lack of track record Claeys has right now, but after we go 9-3 or 10-2 the upcoming season I think alot of those type of recruits could see Claeys as an up and comer which can be sold sometimes more effectively than a long track record of winning can be to 18 year olds.

If Claeys and company keep plugging away and continue winning like they did under Kill the recruiting will only get better, especially as the Kill era recruits continue to get drafted.

Agree. I would want Watts over Snelson. Although gut feeling is we are about to have neither. Snelson keeps saying he has not decommitted then he puts out a Top 4. I'm sure the staff is about had it with these kids.

Don't ever speak that name again!

Absolutely not. Ideally your recruits can push starters from day #1 or as redshirts and leave early like Maxx Williams. These type of players molded with solid 5 year players make great teams.

Perhaps you mis understood. Yes push them, but if you keep bringing in the type of quality of athlete you want eventually you will build enough depth where only those exceptional ones get on the field early. When you bring in quality players you can let the young guns develop in practice and in the weight room.

Really? I mean even if you're down on the Gophs, you think he's picking Jackson St. over V Tech and North Carolina? Not saying he wouldn't, but that would surprise me. It's not uncommon for a recruit to tweet every time they get an offer.

Just being a smart *ss. It seems like anytime someone gets an offer somebody responds with that.

Sarcasm much?

He has to the most over-hyped recruit in the 10 years that I've followed Gopher football recruiting.

Interesting take. Most think he is a great player because he was a 4-star. He may or may not be, but his offer list is very odd for someone like that. Is UCF the only team in his home state that has offered? I figure he either has other issues or you are right and teams agree with you that he is overrated.

The gophers need to figure out their d line in this class it doesn't seem strong once again

Agreed.

As it stands right now, I would think the Gophs need 2 high school defensive tackles in next year's class for sure and then at least one juco dtackle in the 2017 class along with whatever else they take for Dlineman. The next two years we would appear to be okay at defensive tackle depth wise, but then after that we could be in trouble depending upon the next two years.

I would like to see us become more consistent in the dline recruiting, bringing in more consistent numbers each year. We had a huge class a couple years ago bringing in Moore, Stelter, Richardson, Elmore (although originally a TE), and now switching Gibson over. But then the last 2 years have been thin again even though this year isn't done yet.

I'm sure they're trying. As others have said, definitely the toughest position to recruit.

It's obvious the Gophers would like to land at least one more D-Line prospect, which is why they are going after Fant. But I don't understand why there is so much whining about lack of depth etc. As of today the Gophers will have 14 d-line scholarship players next year. 7 DT and 7 DE. That's not including pass rush specialists like Huff and possibly Coughlin. You know they usually only play 4 at a time right?
