Official 2015 Recruiting Updates Thread: Links, Tweets, Videos, Stories, Rumors, etc.

Honestly, I would not worry about rankings when it comes to recruiting the secondary as the staff absolutely knows how to recruit and coach this position. The positions that seem the most concerning to me in terms of this staffs ability to recruit/evaluate/develop as of now are...

1. QB
2. WR
3. DE

The positions that I feel the staff is the best at recruiting/evaluating/developing as of now are...

1. DB
2. OL
3. RB

Good post.

wondering why Sykes would choose Wash St over Minnesota and Nebraska and Oregon st. Maybe because he would have been a backup? 247sports has him as .8226 3 star.

As others have said, he waited too long on the Minnesota offer and lost his spot. I'd also bet the Nebraska offer was not comittable or he'd be a Husker right now. My guess is with Minnesota off the table, Nebraska a wait-and-see, that he took the first rock solid offer to a BCS school he had in front of him since the clock is ticking.

Well for starters, we were in the bottom half of the B1G in sacks.

View attachment 3310

Out of all of our front 7 sacks only 19 came from the DL 10 of those being DE's.

I get what you're saying, Cochran and Keith are both decent players, but not stars. It's hard for me to look at the young combo of Hank Ekpe/Gaelin Elmore and not feel good about the future of DE though.

I tend to think DT has been more of a problem than DE. Richardson is a stud but the lack of depth is concerning.

Not so sure, as we had Rashede, Botticelli and Scott Ekpe looked really good before he got hurt. Steven Richardson and Scott Ekpe are the reasons that I ranked DT over DE. We really really really NEED a dynamic pass rusher off the edge and to this date the staff hasn't recruited/developed one. That may change and Elmore or someone else may be a game changer but as things stand we need to do a better job at DE.

Cockran has been either second team All Big Ten or an honorable mention by both the coaches and media two years in a row. The staff took him from a 200 pound 2 star to 255. Wilhite had 8.5 sacks and 11 TFLs in 2012 and Elmore will be a very very good player. We are doing fine at DE.

Cockran had 4 sacks and 25 tackles this yr...

No, it's the head coach of Pitt St.

You cannot make this stuff up! Someone get that young man a new picture. If he's expecting Tim Brewster on his visit, he'll be so overwhelmed with joy that he'll sign on the spot.

Talk about a low bar....we will greatly exceed his expectations. WOW, just wow.

ha! it's also old enough that there are only 11 teams in the B1G...

Trenard Davis was just offered by Wisconsin and Willie Sykes was just offered by Nebraska a few days ago (who just committed to Washington State.) Gophers would not take either of there commitments after Hardin and Craighton committed. Pretty awesome.

QB and WR have been sketchy. Foreman and DRM were both puzzling. The WRs, we've had 33 of em in 4 years and are hoping 3 freshmen save us. Maybe circumstances is more the issue than evaluation at DE? I'd say you are on target with your rankings. Are LB's in the middle? TE's have been good too....effective when not flashy.

Are you saying recruiting him was puzzling or him leaving is puzzling? I think he had offers from Iowa, Nebraska, and Kansas. Not great offers but not terrible either.

Foreman did have a Baylor offer at one point and he was a very late signee in Kill's first year.

This has been said before, but his other offers were for DB. I believe the Gophers were the only P5 to offer him at QB.

Oh man, I really hope we get TJ Skelton... He looks pretty good.

Dutchtown's Alonzo Craighton comfortable with moves to Minnesota, cornerback

Answering questions about the cold weather in Minnesota appears to have become routine for Alonzo Craighton.

Dutchtown's senior safety knows his transition to college will be an adjustment, maybe more so than for most, but said his October commitment to the Golden Golphers couldn't be any more solid now, three months later and with National Signing Day two weeks away.

"I'm pretty happy about it," he said. "The cold, that's just something you've gotta deal with. My mom always says that you've gotta grind things out or you're not gonna get anything done, so it doesn't matter where I'm at — you've just gotta play football."

Craighton hasn't visited the university since September, but has kept in close contact with coach Jerry Kill and his staff, including defensive backs coach and special teams coordinator Jay Sawvel.

"Me and coach Sawvel and coach Kill have a great relationship," he said. "They were at my house (Monday) and just talking about how (Sawvel) can't wait to get a Louisiana player. He'd only had one the last couple years, so he doesn't get to really coach a lot of down south kids unless they're from Texas or Florida. The Louisiana/Mississippi area's not really heavily recruited by Minnesota, so it was nice for him to get a Louisiana DB, and we're looking to get more from down here — a couple of wide receivers we're hoping will commit."

The Golden Gophers continue to target Comeaux's Hunter Register and Hahnville's Brandon Singleton, with Register scheduled to announce a commitment Wednesday — with Louisiana-Lafayette, Minnesota and Tulane appearing the likeliest possible choices.

Craighton said he's attempted to help recruit the pass-catchers and is interested to hear their eventual choices.

"I need somebody I can come down home with," Craighton joked.

The bigger transition may be an expected move back to cornerback, where the 6-foot-2, 185-pound defensive back hasn't played for the Griffins since sophomore season.

"When coach Sawvel came and first saw me practice, he said, 'I wish I knew this guy could run,'" Craighton said. "Then he saw my combine when I ran a 4.6(-second 40-yard dash) flat, and he said, 'OK, we're gonna get him.' Ever since then, he's been talking to me about playing cornerback. It's just something you've gotta deal with.

"Nothing major, just learning the new position. You can play anywhere if you're a DB. That's why they call you 'DB' and not just safety and cornerback, but DB. You've gotta learn how to play everywhere. It's gonna be fun learning hot to play corner and the new coverages."

All that considered, Craighton said he felt extremely comfortable during his visit to Minnesota and looks forward to the upcoming move.

"When I went on the visit, the crowd was like the SEC," he said. "It was just like home. Big Ten football is on the uprise, and obviously you get to play agains the national champion (Ohio State)."

The Advertiser: Register makes verbal commitment to Minnesota

A recruiting process that had been a long and time-consuming process came to an end on Wednesday as Comeaux High’s Hunter Register issued a verbal commitment to continue his football career at the University of Minnesota.

“I’m really excited,” Register said. “It was a long process and a lot of thought went into it. People’s feelings were hurt and people were happy about it, but it was something that I really had to think about and (do) what was best for me.”

Register, who had opportunities to play basketball and football in college, took visits to Minnesota, UL and Tulane and ultimately chose to play receiver for the Golden Gophers over Memphis, Tulane and Indiana.

“Minnesota is a big school,” Register said. “It’s like going to New York City when coming from Lafayette. There’s skyscrapers everywhere, the fans, there’s like 100,000 people in there and ESPN every week, week in and week out.”

KTSM: Andress WR Rashad Still close to Minnesota commitment

One of El Paso's top Division I football prospects could decide which school he will call home for the next four years this weekend. Andress WR Rashad Still was nearly unguardable this past season for the Eagles. His 6-foot-5 and 200 pound frame made him a nightmare for opposing secondaries. Now three schools stand to land the tall wideout.

With two weeks until National Letter of Intent Signing Day, Still has narrowed his selection to three: UCF, Northern Illinois, and Minnesota. The senior is taking an official visit this weekend to Minneapolis and told NewsChannel 9 if he likes what he sees, he could commit to the Gophers.

When asked about any interest from his hometown UTEP, Rashad told NC 9 that the coaching staff had shown interest but had yet to offer a scholarship. When asked if a scholarship offer would change his decision, Still responded, "I would consider it. Talk it over with my folks. If that happens, we will see what happens."

If Kelly is announcing today, his choice in all likelihood will be Tennessee.

Does Still even have visits set up or offers from anyone but the gophers? They aren't listed on rivals if he does.
