View Full Version : who to cheer for--Hawkeyes/Badgers

That time again where one our hated rivals will be who we want to win.

Based on remaining schedules the badgers have an easy schedule the rest of the way and would hate to have them go through the year with only 1 loss if they win this weekend.

The Hawkeyes are undefeated and prefer not to have them be in contention for a national title or a BCS bowl and they play OSU still

IMO, I prefer the HAwks to win because I hate BB and always have dislike the Badgers. We still play the Hawkeyes and would be nice to upset them and ruin their season.

I'll be in Vegas for the weekend, so I'm also trying to figrue out who to bet on...if anyone. I hate them both, but I hate Iowa more...so sadly I think it will be as simple as that for my rooting/betting interest. WIS does have a really easy schedule left, but I'm still not convinced that they are a good enough team to roll through all of those.

The Hogeyes in the BCS would be a much worse nightmare than an 11-1 or 10-2 Becky season.

Who hates Iowa!!?!?

...tough one. I'm gonna go Iowa for the win. This is the last challenge on Wisconsin's schedule (unless you count Michigan going to Camp Randall...their away games are Indiana, Northwestern and Hawaii). Iowa still has to go to OSU. And, worst case scenario, we get shot at them on the last day of the season if they pull through the rest of the year w/ a BCS shot.

The fact that one of these teams has to win this game makes me want to vomit. With that said, this is a tough call. The last thing I want is for either Wisconsin or Iowa to be able to claim a share of the Big Ten title so who I will be cheering for will be heavily influenced by that.

Wisconsin has the easier schedule from here on out.... in fact I think the Iowa game is their toughest remaining on the schedule. If they beat Iowa, they could easily run the table. If Iowa wins they put Wisconsin out of contention, but then they're still undefeated. With games remaining @ MSU and @ OSU there is more potential for them to lose to a good team than there is for Wisconsin. I would say though that chances are 50-50 that the winner of this game finishes the Big Ten with only one loss, and then gets a share of the title if OSU slips up.

From my perspective, I think Iowa is the better team and they are less likely to slip up the rest of the way than Wisconsin is. Seeing Wisconsin get pasted by OSU last week is enough to allow me to cheer for them in this game. Right now Iowa controls their own destiny for a Big Ten title (although it will be difficult) and that disturbs me. Time for Iowa to be taken down a notch like Wisconsin was last week.

+3, for me personally. HOWEVER, if a fan were to be rooting solely on the basis of which win would help Minnesota more, you'd have to root for Wisconsin. As someone pointed out, their schedule is much easier the rest of the way and could conceivably land them in a BCS bowl at 11-1. Assuming OSU also finishes 11-1 (and again, who knows), the Big 10 could end up with 2 BCS teams, which would bump all other bowl-eligible teams up in the pecking order. ALSO, since UM has already lost their head-to-head with Wisky, there's no chance of jumping them in the bowl order. That said, there's still an outside chance of jumping Iowa with a) a very strong finish, including a win at Iowa, and b) two or three additional Iowa losses.

My $0.02.

This is easy for me. Badgers suck.

But beyond that, Iowa is the only team that has a shot at a National Championship in the Big Ten. I think it will be very good for the Big Ten to have a contender. Even better for the gophers to defeat a very highly rated team to finish the regular season!!!

The fact that he's never lost to the Gophers doesn't preclude him from being a dufus. He just is.

He reminds me of our former basketball coach in Minnesota. The first time he looks a person in the eyes when he speaks will be the first. The social graces and personality of a tird.

Wisconsin. The sooner Iowa loses one the better. There is no way I want guys like Kinnicknation etc celebrating a win over Wisconsin, and having them talk about how great they are. If either team does finish 11-1 and make it to a BCS game, it will be lights out like it was for Iowa against USC a few years back in the Orange Bowl. When either team runs up against a good defense like Wisconsin did against Ohio State, they don't stand a chance.

Iowa is easier for me to hate because the vast majority of their fans I've met are so ignorant. Becky is impossible to cheer for at the same time, so being the game is in Madison, hopefully both teams beat each other to a pulp and the winner squeeks out a heart-breaker. I can never cheer for Iowa because of their fans but I do respect Captain Kirk as a coach. I would like the Gophers to play defense like Iowa and have the running game of Becky. Can't stand either fanbase. The thought of 60-65000 Becky fans leaving with their heads down and PO'd does make me smile a bit .

Let's keep it civil GV.

Do you expect to participate on this board (which I have no problem with) and not expect Bielema to take some shots from us? Generally speaking I don't get into the "F Wisconsin or F Iowa" stuff the likes of lunatic-fringers like Bronko (I wrongly predicted a Gopher victory over your Badgers), but nevertheless I don't understand the fascination with visiting other school's chat boards. I have no interest and see no purpose in visiting Buckyville for the primary purpose of needling Badger fans.

I was asking a serious question. I have never met Bielema myself but have read that he is very personable and is great working a room. That is why I asked if you have ever met him. You certainly can take a shot at him and I have no problem with that. I was just curious whether what you were saying was based on personal experience.

Hawkeyes. We still have a chance to have a better record than the Badgers. Our defense let them look much better than they are.

And people think there is not great entertainment on this board.

Let me translate the above. "Our defense sucks, so they can't be any good either."

Try this one out. Give credit to the other team when they beat you. I know it is tough, but give it a shot.

Here is an example from my post on the UW/OSU game.

Stats in the context of THIS game are meaningless. The front seven of OSU dominated the game and was the reason the Badgers had no chance to win the game. Yards are great. How many did the Badgers get when they had to have them? Not many. Moving between the 30's makes for nice stats. Scoring when you get down there is where games are won. The Badgers could not do it because the OL was getting the crap beat out of them. The first INT, a key play in the game was forced by the pass rush. Toon was wide open and Tolzien missed him badly because of the rush. If he is standing back there with time, he hits Toon easily there. As well as the defense played, when the chips were down and they needed a stop to take a halftime lead, how did they do? The defense of OSU dictated the offensive game plan for them. No reason for Tressel to take a lot of chances with the way our OL was getting dominated up front. He knew what his defense could do. It really is a simple game. Block and tackle. OSU did it much better on Saturday.

Sound advice. Maybe you should consider taking it yourself? I could probably find 20 posts from the last week plus that say some variation of 'Wisconsin earned the win.' Does that mean we no longer have the right to notice their weaknesses? Do I have to refer to the badgers as "Wisconsin - who beat us this year and therefore has no faults" whenever I mention them, just to sate your ego? Or maybe you think this is some weird war, and since we lost a game to you, Minnesota is now technically part of Wisconsin and is therefore obligated to blindly cheer for the badgers. (Come to think of it, that would explain why you spend all your time on this posting board.)

All Gopher fans should be rooting for the outcome that gives the Gophers their best chance at a conference title, or in lieu of that, the outcome that gives the Gophers a chance to finish ahead of one or both teams.

In this case Gopher fans should root for Iowa because the Gophers would win the conference if Iowa edges Wisconsin and the Gophers win out. As unlikely as that may be, it is the rational choice unless you have some other reason for wanting one or the other to win.
