wow, this kid runs very aggressively. A little disappointed he didn't get more carries.
bennett played well...held onto the ball, but he's clearly not trusting the knee with his lateral cuts.
whaley is a violent runner for his size...i look forward to his contributions later in the year.

Whaley was only in for four or five runs (I think) but it seemed like he has an explosiveness and vision that the others don't have. On one run he actually changed direction and went where the opening was. I expect he will move up to #2 in the depth chart and will get a lot more carries next week.

Agreed. He looked very good. Between Gray and Whaley the future of our ground attack has the potential to be very explosive, let's home they both continue to develop.

so you're saying Brew risked player lashback from "outing" these two, but keeping Whaley's hush-hush?? Why would Brew do that for a player with 1 carry to his name? Doesn't make much sense, so I'm going to say your theory doesn't either. Plus, Brew has always been open about these things, so I wouldn't say you were vindicated, I would say you were proven wrong, because brew would release those kinds of things.

Yes it was a big deal which is why he was "suspended" for 2 games. Hopfully he has learned a lesson and will have a long prodcutive career and life at the U of M. Maybe if Brewster went public with the Whaley suspension he would have avoided the recent two players who were suspended. Always better to be open since the info will be made public someday.

Still not going to believe blarneys until I hear something substantial. The fact that Brew has publicly suspended two other players, one of whom is a starter, even makes me more convinced that blarneys is full of it. If he were in the business of hiding this sort of info, it'd be much more advantageous to do so with McKinley that Whaley

Case Supplements
6 supplements begin on the following page.

Supplement number: 1 CCN: MP-08-337140 Author: 007619 - Heidi Eisenbeis
On 11/01/2008, I was riding in the Mounted Patrol squad car northbound on Hennepin Av. I saw Officer NELSON and Officer MCCAFFERTY in a doorway fighting with a male. It appeared that they were having difficuties with him and that the male was trying to get away from them.
I got out of the squad car and went over to assist them. AP was standing in the doorway. I saw AP throw up his elbows and almost struck Officer NELSON in the face. I told AP that if he did not stop resisting that I would use my taser on him. I took out the firing dart cartridge and just had the touch stun effective. AP kept swearing at us and kept trying to fight, throwing elbows and using his body strength to pull away.
Officer NELSON was able to bring AP down to the ground where AP continued to try to get up, twisting his body. I was leaning on his lower back area and he kept twisting his hips as if he was trying to get away from us. I again told AP to stop resisting or he would be tased. He said "*&^@#*&^@#*&^@#*&^@# that" and twisted again almost getting my weight off of him. At this point, I gave AP a touch stun with the taser to the lower back. He complied for a few seconds but again started twisting.
Officer NELSON and Officer MCCAFFERTY escorted him to the squad car. As they were approaching the squad car, AP pushed his way towards me. I was not able to push him back so I again touch stunned him, this time in the stomach area. They were then able to get AP into the rear of the squad.
While in the back of the squad AP was kicking so that they were not able to get the squad door closed. I told him to quit resisting, get in the car or I would tase him again. He kicked out at me, striking me in the left hand. I was able to get in the squad and gave him another touch stun as Officer MCCAFFERTY opened the other door and pulled him in. After the taser cycled through, AP stated "OK, OK" and he did not continue fighting.

Supplement number: 2 CCN: MP-08-337140 Author: 004971 - Eric Nelson
On 11-01-2008 I was working in a downtown warehouse bar beat in the area of 5th st and Hennepin Ave N with my partner Officer Mccafferty. Officers were talking with the manger of the Element Bar (W/1 Buhler). When we observed AP/1 Whaley take a swing with his fist and strike the front security door person in the face (V/1 Mohlenkamp). As other security went to assist Mohlenkamp I grabbed onto the back of Whaley's dreadlocks and pushed him away from the front door of the nightclub. As I was going to place him under arrest for Assault 5 V/1 Mohlenkamp told Officers that he just wanted Whaley to leave the area.
At this time Whaley spun out of my grasp and stated I am out of here. I informed Whaley that if he came back to the Element Nightclub that I was going to place him under arrest as he walked SB on Hennepin Ave from 5th St.
It should be noted that W/1 Buhler and W/2 Barna were standing right next to Mohlenkamp when this incident took place.
As Officers were standing across the street from Element Nightclub we were flagged down by Element Security. As Officers walked over to the Element I observed that Whaley was right in the face of Mohlenkamp and I believed that he was going to start fighting again. At this time I grabbed onto Whaley and informed him he was under arrest. Whaley immediately tried to flee from Officers, but I was able to grab onto Whaley and put him in a headlock as Whaley continued to try and get away from Officers. As Officer Mccafferty and I were ordering Whaley to place his hands behind his back he refused and continued to fight with Officers. Whaley was fighting to get away from Officer so hard that as Officers were trying to gain control of him we both fell into the street on Hennepin Ave as their was gridlock traffic. As Officers got Whaley to the ground he continued to fight with us and kept trying to push himself up and get away. I gave Whaley several knee strikes to the side of his torso in an attempt to get control of his left arm.
I was finally able to get a handcuff on Whaley's left arm as he continued to struggle with Officers. Officer Mccafferty kept ordering Whaley to place his other hand behind his back but he refused. It should be noted that as this was going on Whaley was continuing to try and get up from the street. After struggling with Officers for several minutes we were able to get him handcuffed and got him out of the street.
As Officers were walking Mccafferty out of the street he told Officers to take the handcuffs off because he was going to kick our asses. As Officers were searching Whaley incident to arrest he swung his right arm at me hitting me in the top of the head with his elbow stating *&^@#*&^@#*&^@#*&^@# you bitch.
Officers again took Whaley to the ground and told him to stop resisting Officers. Whaley continued to verbally assault Officer and try and get away from us as Officers had him pinned on the ground.
Officers Eisenbeis has to use a taser stun to get Whaley to stop being combative with Officers. As Officers were waiting for the booking van to arrive we escorted Whaley to the our squad that was parked in the street. As we walked Whaley to the squad he kept saying *&^@#*&^@#*&^@#*&^@# you bitches and tried to head butt Officer Mccafferty. As Officers were placing Mccafferty in the squad he refused to place his feet in the squad and kept kicking the door forcefully at Officers. At this time Officer Eisenbeis gave Whaley two more taser stuns and Officers were finally able to get the squad door shut.
When Officer Archer and Harrington pulled up in the booking van they transferred Whaley from our squad to the Van as he continued to verbally assault Officers. Whaley was transported to HCJ where he was charged with Assault 5 and Obstructing Legal Process with Force. V/1 Mohlenkamp told Officers that he did not need medical attention.

Supplement of Off D.McCafferty #004530 on 11/01/2008 03:41
On 10/31/2008 while working off duty #6172 with my partner Officer Nelson #4971 we speaking with management at Element nightclub. While speaking with management I observed A1 strike V1 in the face with a closed fist. At this time, at the request of Element nightclub, we sent A1 from the scene because V1 just wanted him sent. We advised A1 if he returns that he would be arrested. We returned to the NE corner of 5th Street and Hennepin Ave. I then observed A1 walk back towards the front door of Element Nightclub.
My partner then began to cross the street back towards Element because of what we earlier advised A1 and fear that he may attempt to assault V1 again. As we approached A1 from behind I could see he was standing directly in front of V1, almost nose to nose, arguing. Fearing A1 would again strike V1 Nelson informed A1 he was under arrest and attempted to place A1 into custody. My partner grabbed A1's right arm and he immediately began resisting. I grabbed A1's left arm and he began to spin away from us into the middle of Hennepin Ave. While in the middle of the street I was ordering A1 to place his hands behind his back. A1 actively resisted by pulling away and swinging his hands yelling, "*&^@#*&^@#*&^@#*&^@# That!" and "*&^@#*&^@#*&^@#*&^@# You!" at officers. I could see A1 had his arms wrapped around my partner's waist and I delivered two knee strikes to A1's torso. At this time we fell to the ground and I was able to position myself on top of A1's torso. A1 was actively grabbing at me so I delivered one right handed punch to A1's face while yelling at him to stop resisting. A1 continued to resist and I delivered 7 elbows place his hands behind his back. I then delivered 6-7 right handed elbows to A1's face while yelling at him to place his hands behind his back. I heard my partner yelling at him to place his hands behind his back several times. I then gained control of A1's right hand and was able to secure it behind his back.
We then moved A1 to the East side of Hennepin Ave into the entryway of a door so we would be out of the street. While conducting a custodial search I saw A1 swing his right arm and strike my partner in the head with his right elbow as he yelled, "*&^@#*&^@#*&^@#*&^@# You Bitch!"
We then placed A1 back on the ground due to him still attempting to assault officers. We were then assisted by several other officers, including Officer Eisenbeis #7619. A1 continued to yell obscenities while lying on the ground. Booking Van #149 was then requested to transport A1.
We then began to move A1 to the rear of our squad until the booking van arrived. While walking A1 to our squad, which was parked in the bike lane of Hennepin Ave A1 kicked a cab which was passing by. After passing the cab A1 attempted to head butt me. A1 was then placed in the rear seat of our squad and began yelling obscenities at officers again. Eisenbeis attempted to close the squad door but A1 began kicking the squad door so I went to the passenger side to pull him while Eisenbeis attempted from the driver side. I pulled A1 in from the passenger side. When I saw Eisenbeis had her door secure I heard A1 yell, "*&^@#*&^@#*&^@#*&^@# You! You *&^@#*&^@#*&^@#*&^@#ed up my career!" as I was closing my door.
A1 was then transferred to the booking van. A1 was placed in the back alone and I heard A1 kicking the doors of the booking van.

It should be noted that the original incident between AP/1 Whaley and V/1 Mohlenkamp started when Whaley did not have proper identification to get into the Element Nightclub. When Mohlenkamp asked Whaley to move away from the front door of the club, Whaley became angry and punched Mohlenkamp in the face with his fist.

Correct on sentence 1 in the sense that it happened 11/1/08, but not from the sense of the public knowing about it...as for part 2, that's awfully presumptuous on your part...when have I ever said I dislike (hate is far too strong a word unless we're talking about Bin Laden, or someone comparable) the guy? I am a realist, and curious how a player, no matter who the head coach is, could survive an incident like that? it was discussed here and other boards, you missed it obviously. Two, semantics when caught. no answer, then claim you never said anything. You take shots all the time. I dare you to do a write up with out a shot at the ballcoach. Not sure you can. I'm willing to be surprised.
USC, Florida, and Texas are nothing but angels. USC one player, three arrests, zero punishment...say it is not so Pete. Florida, their boards were full of a player with cocaine distribution on his record on the team. Texas? haven't had time to look and I don't remember anything. Have I said he should not be punnished, nope. I just don't believe he was secretly punnished, an then he outs two other people. Not without proof. FL has had enough kids cited in the last year, same goes for Iowa, and many other schools...I've praised Brewster plenty for his ability to find quality D-linemen, maybe the toughest position to recruit, for hiring Roof last year, for hiring Fisch this year...defended him endlessly on KFAN for his 1-11 year, citing the idea that Mason didn't leave him nearly as much talent as many think...and praised him endlessly as well for the wins @ Ill. & Pur. last year on the KFAN Gopher Fanline show that I hosted.
I will add: this board isn't the end-all...just because it was discussed on here doesn't mean it was public knowledge.

Doogie, are you going to "break" this story in the Strib this week?
Doogie

Not me, and I don't like using the word "break"...have always said it's better to be right, than to be 1st...Strib already all over it.

Why do we care what happened last year? Did the NCAA suspend him? Did the coach suspend him? Kids get into trouble. Non-story. We landed on the moon!!!!

It is not a big deal. No charges came of it and simply expelling every athlete that gets into trouble benefits no one. However, let's forever cut the we are holier than thou crap.
We are not, never have been and never will be.
The only Big Ten school that can claim a holier than thou attitude is the University of Chicago.

Funny the STrib thinks reporting year old news is print worthy.
BTW Jesse Garcia is my uncle, he lies to me all the time, he probably lied to Doogie too, I wouldn't trust him ;)

Love this statement, just think if the media cronies in this town actually read gopherhole they would have had another reason to rip the gophs apart, I will give doogie a pass, he worked at KFAVRE at the time and certainly wasn't looking for gopher info, he had his nose too far up childress' ass.

it was discussed here and other boards, you missed it obviously.
I think I may have missed it too - I don't recall seeing anything about this until today. If any of you could provide links from the past, I would love to see the discussion (I'm not questioning you, I'd just like to see what all came out last year).
I did a quick search, since we switched to this board at the end of November last year, I search our Yuku board, and this was what came up when I put "Whaley" as a keyword:

I haven't gone through the search but Reusse made some pretty disparaging remarks about the kids Bewster was bringing in and kept bringing up Whaley. I recall people thinking it was all due to the shooting but now it looks like he knew more. Probably had the information but the STRIB chose not to publish as it is not really news since no charges seem to have been laid.
In Iowa City they put all the police reports online and that is why everythnig gets covered (even underage drinking citations).
Of course KFAN didn't know about it- there is no and has never been any journalism coming out of there.

Without question Schnoodler is either Brez or Sternquist and hopefully when the Strib fires Kent from this story and puts either Brackin or Rand in charge this will end.
Brez and Sternquist, you should know that EVERYTHING you do on your computers is available to us under the Freedom of Information Act.
????? I'm confused, please elaborate

I have actually met Schnoodler - and can vouch he is just a regular dude, and a big Gopher fan.
As for last year's reports - I absolutely remember Ruesse writing about our guys, I want to say he called them "thugs" and that lead to a big uproar...but I thought he was speaking more in general, not regarding this actual incident. My memory is not the best, but this is the 1st I heard of it.

Well, I couldn't find the rumor on the old board or the new one...oh well.
I would like to know, Schnoodler, why don't you think this is a big deal? I personally, think it's a big deal any player is arrested, or fights with police officers, or is charged with a gross misdemeanor. God knows I had my share of underage drinking, I was lucky to never get a minor - but something like this is not something ordinary college kids have on their record.
Granted, it's a year old and I'm sure Brew has handled things accordingly, but I can't imagine anyone reading that report and not thinking behavior like that is not a big deal, athlete or not.

I also remember the threads and the Wren and Loon style posts that went into some thinly veiled racist comments and gang implications, but most overall the comments were of the no charges filed, bad judgement, what was an 18 year doing out at that time stuff.
Sorry, GL you will have to do your own digging, I do enough research at work that I have no inclination do it at home as well. If I recall correctly it was not under it's own thread, more in the middle of some Fat Pat lover's defense of his "thug" comments but I have been wrong before and this was 9 or so months ago.
To the point, if he committed a criminal act, or just a stupid one, he should be punished. I hope he was punished, the legal system and or doorman at the club decided not to proceed with legal actions, or so it appears, then the punishment should come from team. Did it? I don't know, I don't hang out at Bierman or around practice. Now we have a one man who posts here, claiming he witnessed an assult. Did he? how can we possibly know? Another claims something to the effect that he is a relly bad guy and he has the proof. Refers to one report then posts one from almost a year ago, which had been discussed here. I guess I'm old school, pre-Patriot Act, I still believe people are innocent until proven gulity, but I also have zero tolerance for coaches who are too loose with discipline. Brewster could have sat on the latest discpline cases and waited until after Saturday to give two game punishments, but he didn't. He found out and he sat the guys down before the press got involved. Wisconsin game or no, he did it now. We are to believe that he sits a starter and a key back up quickly, publicly, but does some "secrect" measures with a third or fourth string player, when going public would score him points?
It doesn't add up to me, Doogie. Maybe all of your Football playing and coaching experence leads you to a different answer, mine leads me to the idea that public punishments do more good, let the whole team know at once, let the player feel that he let down his friends, his team, his school etc. Most people do not enjoy that feeling and do work to not feel that way again.
Since I have already typed this much, let me tell you a quick story.
A Hockey player at UMD named Rusty Fitzgerald went to Grandma's Sports Garden one night some years ago. While he was there a fight broke out. The Cops came and arrested Rusty along with three Canadian junior hockey players who where in town. The cops released the Canadians, but kept Rusty for the night. The story hit the paper the next morning, a columnist wrote a scathing article about run away college athletes, the above the law, too good for rules, mindset etc. Would have made Fat Pat proud. The next day the police release a statement saying that no charges will be filled. The columnist writes another piece blasting the player, the team, and the police claiming special treatment. One week later all was made clear. Rusty had walked away from these three guys three seperate times. The Sports Garden is a big place and no matter where he went, these guys kept following him. They had taunted him, made comments about his Girlfriend, and pushed him on several occations, They continued to go after him, Rusty and the girl left, the three followed him across the street into the parking lot. By this time some other guys had noticed and came to Rusty's defense, the fight broke out, Rusty just stood to the side since the fight was at his car and around it he had to wait to leave.
The cops came arrested Rusty since they knew who he was, assumed he was in on it, and were told he was fighting by the Canadians. Rusty went to jail, the Canadians where given a ride back to their hotel. The next morning when the police started interviewing witnesses and matched their stories to the ones from the night before, the case fell apart. One week later the columnist wrote an article about rushing to judgement, and said he was sorry, something I may never live long enough to see Fat Pat do.
This is why I wait until the facts are in before I leap. As the Mutal Fund ads say "Past performance is no indication of Future results." If he did beat up Blarneys, and got arrested again I have no problem with his being removed from the team for good and zero problem attacking Brewster for not being in control of his players and recruiting "bad character" guys. I just wait to see what I'm aiming at before I start throwing rocks around.
The mass is over go in peace.

I also find this police report disappointing. I think it is a glimpse into this kids character. Like others, I never saw this until today. It puts a new light on the fact that he was shot in the leg a couple of years ago. I remember thinking, wow, that kid was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Fairly, or not, I'm thinking he was no innocent bystander. If this kid was a Badger or Hawkeye, people would not be passing this off so lightly on this board.
Let's hope this kid has grown up and learned something over the last 10 months. Sounds like he needs Mike Singletary up in his grill.

I guess it's how you define big deal. He didn't commit a felony, didn't murder or rape anyone or steal anything. I guess that's what I mean by it's not a big deal. This stuff happens, our beloved WVDS had an incident if you recall. What's important is what happens after. Does he learn, does he grow. Does he become a good student and team mate and more responsible citizen. That's the larger issue. I'm less concerned about where a person has been and more concerned about where he is going. That's the real story. Not if an 18 year old kid made some bad 18 year old decisions. I also believe as fans we are part of the process. Pointing fingers and impying he's 'other' or some kind of thug does not aid in that process. I also see the university as part of a larger community. Which is why I hold middle aged journalist accountable for their poor actions before I run an 19 year old kid out of town for his 18 year old actions.
If kevin does not grow as a person, if he becomes a cancer to the team, fine run him out of town. But I really can't believe any of our so called journalists can get off their fat asses long enough to actually go talk to the kid and find out how he's doing. And personally from the lack of professionalism these hacks show again and again, if I were Brewster I wouldn't let these idiots anywhere near him. So that is the state of journalism in the metro.

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on this one...it clearly wasn't like the police report with Dom Jones and company, where I was mortified. However, it was very disturbing, I think assault of numerous police offiers is far worse than stealing something non-violently. But, I'm not going to argue crimes here - because that's very subjective. What you could find as minor, I see a major.
As for your 2nd paragraph about talking to the kid to find out how he's doing...do you really think they are available for media comments? Even if there's not a controversy, you can only interview the kids at school sanctioned media events, like the representative they have at the press conference. This is to protect them, and I think it's a good rule. You can cricitze any of the journalists for not printing what you want, but cannot fault them from not going to the source, as they are not allowed to.
P.S. We do agree on one thing - I too, hope he grows as a person, and this is the last we hear about any problems. He's talented, and capable of a lot, I hope he takes advantage of the opportunities he will have being at the U.

Really? Then you must have different media rules than the rest of us do. They are instructed to not talk to media. So even if they do, and we print it, they will get in trouble. I've talked to a number of guys during the season, but I would never quote them, mention them, or even use any information they gave me - for fear they would get in trouble. I don't think anyone in the media would.
