On Jan. 3, 2018, the University of Minnesota men’s basketball team was 13-3 overall, determined to regain a top-25 ranking and make another run to the NCAA tournament.

Two days later, 2016-17 Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year Reggie Lynch, the team’s fourth-leading scorer with the second-best rebounding average, was suspended and ultimately expelled after university investigations deemed him responsible for violating the school’s code on sexual misconduct. On Jan. 23, the Gophers’ third-leading scorer, Amir Coffey, would play his last game of the season after suffering a shoulder injury.

Add five games without starting guard Dupree McBrayer and the Gophers’ once promising 2017-18 season — when they reached as high as No. 12 in the early AP polls — was in a downward and irretrievable spiral. The Gophers won just two of their final 16 games to finish the season 15-17 overall and 4-14 in the Big Ten.
