The Minnesota Gophers men's basketball team has five new players who can contribute this season and is awaiting an NCAA decision that could make it six.

Marcus Carr, who transferred from Pittsburgh to Minnesota in May, has applied for a hardship waiver to immediately play this season and not sit out the standard year, per NCAA rules.

"Ongoing process with the waiver," Gophers coach Richard Pitino said Tuesday, Sept. 25, before the program's first official practice. "Nothing new. They don't really keep us updated or anything like that."

The rationale for the exception Carr seeks is based on how Pitt coach Kevin Stallings was fired in March; that same reason was used in a recent precedent in which a waiver was awarded.

In March, Watertown, Minn., native Trae Berhow left Pepperdine after its coach was fired, and he transferred to Northern Iowa. He was granted a hardship waiver last week, but his application had an added wrinkle in that Trae's mother, Nicole Berhow, who moved to California to be near her son, was looking to return closer to home to be near her ailing father, according to the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier.

Carr's situation does not include a similar family aspect, but the Gophers hope he will be granted a waiver and that a decision will come well before their Nov. 6 season opener against Omaha at Williams Arena.
