He's a 6-6 wing that averaged over 15 PPG and 7 RPG in the EYBL. I'm not saying he will get blue blood offers but he certainly has the production of someone who could. If I didn't let rankings, stars and offers influence my opinion, I would have thought he is the second best 2019 kid in the state behind Hurt.

I’ve seen Roddy play a couple times last winter and the highlight video posted earlier in this thread. I believe he’s a 6’6 PF. I’m surprised to have seen the recent power 5 offers. I thought he’d be a good mid major player. Could this be a fall-back option for Pitino?

I've only seen highlights and they didn't show defense. Does he have the lateral quickness to defend HM wings? Or will he likely be more of a quick, skilled, undersized PF?

He's absolutely not a wing. Hes an undersized 4. And unless hes grown in the last couple months hes not 6'6.

He was around 25% from 3 his jr year in hs and around 30% from 3 this eybl season. He can step out and hit some shots but hes not a good shooter.

I wonder how his AAU stats/highlight tape would look compared to Jordan Murphy coming out at the same age?

If the athleticism is there and a prospect has long arms, it's possible to make up for a few inches of height when playing as an undersized 4.

I don't know, but he looks like he can dribble a bit and get above the rim very easily.

HuskerCorner: Nebraska basketball target David Roddy gets hometown team offer

One of the newest Nebraska basketball targets on the board has received an offer from his hometown team.
Those paying close attention to the David Roddy saga are going to see some twists and turns. The Nebraska basketball target received an offer from Minnesota Golden Gophers earlier this week.

That offer is going to start off a chain reaction of “will he or won’t he” questions that probably aren’t going to get answers anytime soon. Those questions are more than will he pick the Gophers’ basketball team or Nebrasketball.

Roddy is a different prospect altogether because he’s a talented football player as well. The Huskers aren’t looking at him as a football player. Neither is Minnesota at the moment.

Both teams are squaring off for the power forward on the hard court. The question is whether or not Roddy getting the offer from Minnesota is going to be the game changer.

He hails from Minneapolis, so that has to be something that comes into play. On the other hand, if he holds a grudge towards the Gophers because he hasn’t scored a football offer, that could turn the tide.

247Sports has rated Roddy as a three-star prospect in football. It should be pointed out he’s not rated in the site’s composite rankings. He has a future in football if he wants it.

Roddy has five offers in that sport, including one from Wyoming. At some point, he’s going to have to decide on what game he wants to play.

"Talking with somebody close with Roddy, speaking of uphill battles, it will be an uphill battle, the Gophers aren't eliminated...the Gophers have a chance, but it will be an uphill battle."

Roddy's other offers: Nebraska, Northwestern, Cal-Poly, Wofford, North Dakota, Northern Iowa, etc.

It seems pretty evident that Roddy has a far brighter future in football than in basketball. I haven't seen very many successful 6'5" PFs, especially in today's NBA. If I were him, I would be basing my college decision on the best place for me to play football rather than basketball and, if he is in fact doing that, it wouldn't be a reflection on Pitino's inability to recruit him should he choose to go elsewhere.

I think it has more to do with him liking the educational opportunities at a school such as Northwestern and the ability to get out of state. Breck isnít exactly a feeder school for the U historically where a very very small percentage of their graduates attend the U.

It'd be brighter if he'd play something other than QB. I don't think he's looking to be a professional athlete. NW is the one to beat currently.

My apologies, I didn't realize that he said that. If he is holding to that, he's really shortsighted and being stubborn to the detriment of his own best interests. His height/weight/athleticism profile screams out that he would be a terrorizing DE at the college level and potentially beyond. He's not even that good at QB.

per Marcus:

Breck senior forward David Roddy is on his official visit for Pitino's team Friday through Sunday. The first three players to commit to Whalen in the 2019 class were Stillwater guard Sara Scalia, Des Moines Roosevelt (Iowa) forward Grace Cumming and Des Moines East wing Justice Ross, who are all currently on their official visits on the U campus.

Roddy, who visited Colorado State last week, has three of his former Howard Pulley AAU teammates already on the U roster in freshmen Daniel Oturu, Jarvis Omersa and Gabe Kalscheur. They’ve been trying to get him to commit.

“They don’t bug me every day,” Roddy said. “But every few days, they’ll say, ‘What’s up future teammate?’”

The powerfully built and explosive 6-foot-5, 250-pound Roddy could see himself playing with his buddies in maroon and gold, because “we had such great chemistry,” he said.

“We knew where everybody would be at the right time,” Roddy said. “It was just a really fun AAU season getting to learn from them and absorbing as much knowledge as I could; how to win games, how to lead a team. Just little things like supporting your teammates at all times and keep being positive. Playing with those players (also Duke freshman Tre Jones) led me to be the team leader I was this past summer.”

He is def more of a mid-major guy than High Major in my opinion and with Trey Jackson already committed I don't see the point of signing Roddy.

per Marcus:

Over the weekend, the 6-foot-5, 255-pound senior forward had an official visit with the Gophers men’s basketball program. Roddy’s currently considering Northwestern, Colorado State and Minnesota in hoops.

The recent Gopher visit included watching practice, talking to coaches, touring the new Athletes Village facility, attending the U football team’s victory over Miami (Ohio) and hanging out with his buddies Jarvis Omersa, Daniel Oturu and Gabe Kalscheur. They were former Howard Pulley AAU teammates.

“It was a lot of fun,” Roddy said. “We’re really close just from the AAU circuit. It’s just really cool to see those guys grow up and be in the place they’re in now, representing Minnesota in the most positive way they can. I’m excited for them and what they’ll do this season. It was a really fun spending time with them and getting to know their everyday life and what it is to be a Gopher.”

Watching those incoming freshmen gave Roddy a glimpse of what his experience would be like if he stayed home to play for the Gophers. He also heard from Richard Pitino and the coaching staff about why they wanted him and what his role could be on the team next year.

“The main thing was my versatility and my passing skills,” Roddy said. “It would really help in their offense. I’m a pretty unique player and very blessed. I can play multiple positions and hold my own. Being a facilitator and helping the team and doing all the things these days basketball players don’t like to do. Dive on the floor for loose balls, just the dirty work. I would play an important role on any team I would go to.”

Last week, the Gophers picked up a commitment from four-star Sunrise Christian Academy (Kan.) power forward Tray Jackson, but the U continued to pursue Roddy. Pitino, who has four scholarships available for the 2019 recruiting class, still made an in-home visit with Roddy last week and kept the scheduled official visit.

“That didn’t make much of a difference at all,” Roddy said about Jackson committing. “Congrats to him and the coaching staff. They got a good player from Detroit. I wish him nothing but the best. It’s a good situation for him. He’s a really athletic scorer. I played against him during the AAU season. He’s a good athlete, so Minnesota got a good one with him. I wouldn’t factor into any of my decision making. It’s just a good pickup for the Gophers.”

As for his next official visit, Roddy doesn’t plan to move up his trip to Northwestern on Oct. 13. He’s looking forward to getting another look at Chris Collins’ program and attending the Wildcats homecoming football game against Nebraska.

Gophers fans might be wondering if Roddy’s decision could come immediately after his Northwestern visit in mid-October. That’s his last scheduled official visit having already been to Colorado State and Minnesota, but Roddy is leaning toward waiting until after the football season to announce his plans.

Breck's football team is 3-0 and plays host to undefeated Minneapolis North at 7 p.m. Friday.

“I’ll finish my visits and factor in everything,” Roddy said. “But it’s not going to be exactly right after Northwestern. I want to play out my football season before I make a decision to have as much fun as I can and enjoy it. Then look at my options with what sport and what school is the best option for me.”

I'm a little hung up on the 6'-6" PF as he is currently listed (Marcus keeps reporting he's 6'-5") no idea if he's going to get to 6'-7" or 6'-8" when he's done growing but it would make me feel a lot better about him.

I agree. However, I'd rather see us get Roddy vs scrambling for recruits in the Spring. Especially with several scholarships open.

Interesting and pretty accurate first assement on Stamp from GH: (main.gopherhole.com/news_article/show/93510-first-look-at-j-son-stamper-and-more-)

J'son doesn't have the body of a prototypical Big 10 power forward (he's only about 6'5"), but he appears to have everything else. He's a quick, powerful, and explosive athlete, and he has very good perimeter skills for someone I had initially expected to be solely a post player. J'son handles the ball very well (definitely well enough to play the '3'), and he has a solid jump shot. It's probably most effective from mid-range, but he also knocked down a 17-footer and a 3-pointer during the couple of games he played. He's also able to use both hands in the paint.

-How is Roddy's midrange? Is he a 3/4?

He moves better than you'd expect and can handle the ball well, but for the most part right now he's just a bully in the post. I think he could play some 3 but he's more of a 4.

I watched him play a lot for Pulley as a junior with Tre, Gabe, Oturu and Jarvis and always considered him a bigger 3 who is capable of playing the 4. He can handle some and knock down a timely 3 every once in a while. Thought he was really effective there and was better than Jarvis on that team.

I usually don't follow potential high school recruits but I watched a little video of him and he reminds me a bit of Barkley. Barkley wasn't very highly recruited at all out of high school. If we can give a scholarship to Gas, Bakary, Fitzgerald, and Buggs I don't see why we wouldn't want to give this guy a chance. Given that he's from a prep school though Northwestern may have some appeal.

Sorry I should've been more clear- I meant spending one season as the head coach at three separate schools (Underwood spend 3 years at SFA).

Niko jumped from Drake to CSU after one season, and would be jumping from the Rams after one season to come here.

Dan Monson won big at a tough place. I certainly have a different evaluation of Pitino than you up to this point, but would agree that he needs to keep proving himself. I will be very disappointed if we have to start all over again. There is no guarantee that we'd be able to find a great coach plus the growing pains the first couple years while the new coach tries to catch up on recruiting.. Really hope it doesnt come to that.

per Marcus:

The recruiting process is almost over for Breck senior forward David Roddy, who said Wednesday he will announce his college choice soon between Minnesota, Northwestern and Colorado State.

Roddy told the Star Tribune he plans to make his decision next week at his high school.

The 6-foot-5, 250-pound three-star prospect just saw his football career come to a close with an upset loss to Cannon Falls in the section playoffs Saturday. Roddy was considering scholarship offers to play quarterback, but he's picking basketball over football at the next level.

"Thank you to all my football coaches and mentors who have invested their time into me as a quarterback and a football player," he said Wednesday. "That being said I have decided that I will be playing basketball at the next level."

Roddy and five-star Rochester John Marshall senior Matthew Hurt both attended the U’s Maroon and Gold scrimmage on Sunday at Williams Arena. He was impressed with Gophers coach Richard Pitino’s style and team. His former Howard Pulley AAU teammates Daniel Oturu, Gabe Kalscheur and Jarvis Omersa made their freshmen debut in front of fans.

“It was good seeing them play,” Roddy said, “(With) high pace and a sense of freedom, which I liked.”

Why wouldn't he want to play with his Pulley teammates? Family can easily come to games. Seems like an easy choice.

I guess then again, NW is a great school, and a private school. Private school kids like private schools, sometimes. Good coach there too. Reasonable (though not easy) drive. CO St has a Minn guy now, and cheap flights to Denver.

His physical makeup. His height/weight/athleticism profile screams elite DE - or even DT. If he committed to that position and spent two years in the weight room, he'd come out at 6'5" and 300 lbs. - basically another Ra'Shede Hageman. Unless you're one in a million (think Charles Barkley or Dennis Rodman), you're not going very far in basketball as a 6'5" post.

My presumption is that his football offers aren't great because he said in the past that he'd only play QB.

Agreed. But imagine how much better he could be if he stopped trying to delay the inevitable and just played football now. It's an extra 4 or 5 years of development in that sport. Did you know that Antonio Gates only transferred to Kent St. after leaving Michigan St. when Nick Saban wanted him to play only football (the audacity!). Imagine how good Antonio Gates could've been had he played football in college! He was a part-time player in his rookie season while he got his football legs back under him, then proceeded to dominate basically from year 2 on - and, again, without playing college football.

I agree. Not saying his NFL future is better off by playing basketball, but one advantage is he won't be taking the same pounding on his body that he would if he played football in college.

Prep hoops has him 199th...not too bad of a get for an in state kid for a team that has no other commitments and quite a few openings ...he will crank out a very high GPA..and might be a role player off the bench...

He could've torn his knee in college too, and never made it to the NFL. Goes both ways.

The only way we are possibly a distant 3rd to Colorado State is if he looks at our roster and is really concerned about playing time.

I don't think Roddy would have any better of a chance to make the NFL than any other generic 3 star that has played for the gophers or other Big Ten team. The odds of making it to either the NFL or NBA would be slim for Roddy and I'm sure it wasn't a primary factor or even factor at all in his decision on which sport to play.

I agree his chances to play in the NFL are higher than his chances to play in the NBA but I also think his chances of becoming quality college basketball player are better than becoming a quality college FB player. Roddy averaged over 15 PPG and 7 RPG last year for Pulley in the EYBL. Those are very good numbers for that level of play and are what similar to what Race Thompson and Zeke put up for D1 Minnesota.

Also if Roddy makes neither the NFL nor NBA which is very likely, he would have a much better chance at making decent money overseas playing basketball then he would playing minor league FB in the Arena league or CFL.

I have a hard time believing he'd be on campus 3 times in the last couple weeks if we were that far behind. Maybe hes just there to support his friends but that seems off to me.

Not exactly Reid Travis 2.0, but my Gopher fan version of PTSD has flashes of Reid sitting in the stands just a few days before his announcement and then spurning us. Yes, it's hard to believe he would be doing that much hanging out at the U if he were not coming, but it is definitely possible.

My gut is that he goes to Colorado St. Supposedly he really likes the staff there and I am guessing he's their top priority. Would be surprised if he can still commit to Northwestern given they have Jones and Beran who both play the PF position.

This. He got some free tickets to come watch his friends play. Reid did it. Geno did it. Look where it got us with them. Thats it.

Could he beat out Curry or Omersa? Doesn't help that we are recruiting the guy who took his starting spot on Howard Pulley either.

I don't think he sees a lot of PT here.

Yeah, I wouldn't be much bothered if we took him, or if we didn't get him. He seems like a serviceable role player, but he also seems like somebody we could get another of, especially if we have the season I hope and expect to have this year.

Since Doogie appears to be going with this narrative, Northwestern offered David Roddy on 7/31/18, and Minnesota offered on 8/9/19. I highly, highly doubt a 9 day difference in the late Summer/early Fall is the difference in his recruitment. It's painfully obvious that the Gophers were not considering Roddy until they missed out on numerous other targets, so "the should have offered earlier narrative" doesn't fit here in any way. I think Pitino deserves a lot of criticism for his 2019 recruiting, but whether or not he lands an unranked kid shouldn't change the way you feel about how this cycle has gone for him. I am still very skeptical that the Gophers actually want Roddy as he doesn't seem to be a good fit for the roster (have Curry/Omersa capable of playing the 4, would be yet another big who hasn't shown the ability to space the floor, and the 2020 class has at least 3 local kids that play his position who are more highly regarded in Garcia, Carlson, and Dainja).

I would much rather get Kobe Brown, Dereon Seabron or Drumgoole than Roddy. Two of those three and Hurt would still be an awesome class.

Very true, but I have to believe that MN and NW were slow playing him a bit. Hard to imagine him passing up the academics at NW, but who knows. Good luck to him, seems like a good kid and I'm sure he will be a good 4 year player at a Mid Major.

The Gophers would have taken him if he committed to them. So yes, his U offer was committable.
